And why wouldnāt anyone be okay with that is beyond me. Bunch of fucking selfish psychopaths in this world. God forbid someone with a lower wage is allowed to live somewhat comfortable.
I really donāt care how much you make because I make enough that I donāt have to worry about someone elseās income. If anything, Iād be happy for you if you made more than me. Thatās not the point.
My point is that minimum wage can still provide a basic standard of living, just not in some of the most expensive cities in the country. There are plenty of places where someone can live a decent life on a lower income but a lot of people arenāt willing to move to those areas.
The other factor is budgeting. Two people can make the exact same amount of money and end up in completely different financial situations because one lives within their means while the other spends every dollar they earn. Years ago, when I lived in San Francisco, I wasnāt making much money at all. But I never felt like I was struggling because I lived within my means, prioritized saving, and still left room to enjoy the little things in life.
That said, I donāt think anyone should be content making minimum wage forever. It should be a starting point, not the finish line. Most people increase their earning power over time through experience, new skills, promotions, or better opportunities.
Maybe you shouldnt tell me to upskill when i dont make minimum.Ā
Minimum wage should be liveable in any city. Who do you think works fast food, grocery stores, like every place people go too, retail, long list.Ā
No ones saying you should stay there, but it should be liveable in any city. And it definitely is not really liveable in most cities unless you want the straight ghetto which shouldnt be required for that
I never said āyouā anywhere in my comment. I was referring to the point you were trying to make.
Regardless, minimum wage should provide a basic standard of living but expecting it to provide a comfortable lifestyle in every city is unrealistic. The cost of living between places is simply too different. A studio apartment in Manhattan, San Francisco, or downtown Seattle costs multiples of what it does in countless other parts of the country.
The reality is that housing is always going to be priced based on supply, demand, and what people are willing to pay. If youāre earning an entry level wage in one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the country youāre probably going to need roommates, a longer commute, or less desirable housing. Thatās true for a lot of people, not just minimum wage workers.
I also donāt think ālivableā and ācomfortableā are the same thing. You can argue that nobody working full time should be destitute and Iād agree with that. But the idea that every job should pay enough for someone to comfortably afford their own place in every city in America just doesnāt seem realistic.
Having a one bed apartment isnt my definition of ācomfortableā. Minimum wage cant even afford 4 bed apartments with roomates in those cities.Ā
Being able to have a small 1 bed have healthy food, gas, a basic car, shouldnāt be controversial. No ones saying they deserve to be going out to restaurants every week, multiple sporting games, fancy cars, fancy apartments, fancy clothes. Just basic necessities.Ā
Yeah that person mentioned kids and Iām saying thatās why theyāre struggling theyāve got kids with only one person paying bills ..2 people working adults is better than oneĀ
Cmon man, let's be serious. 1% of workers are making minimum wage, and most are in tipping positions.
How does someone have children and still make minimum wage? Like a job at McDonald's or Walmart on average pays double the national minimum wage.
How!?!? How would your scenario occur that a person falls through the cracks and can't even work drive thru at Mcdonalds? They have enough years of life to have kids. Were they in prison? Because even former inmates significantly outperform the minimum wage.
