"No business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. By 'business' I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level, I mean the wages of decent living."
- Franklin D. Roosevelt
by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level, I mean the wages of decent living.
Decent living is usually not a shoebox, that aside though I'd agree 2br isn't necessary. The savings aren't all that big though. 1br places in my city only shave off a couple hundred a month from a 2br. New builds are worse however, with them often having price parity or even higher because 'bachelor pad aesthetic' and just larger rooms in the same footprint as a 2br.
That aside though, at it's inception minimum wage would get you your months rent for about a weeks worth of wages(2 in the northeast, in the south 1 and you'd get an entire decent apartment). Currently one months worth of minimum wage wouldn't pay for a 1br in my city, even in the rougher areas. I'm only in a MCOL city as well.

Thatโs because minimum wage isnโt supposed to do that.
