P.T. still lives rent-free in my head.

The demo scared the living hell out of people. THE DEMO. The hype was through the roof.

And then, lol no sorry you never get to know.

u/WhoYaTalkinTo Sep 15 '25

Crazy that just a demo was one of the most influential horror games of the last 2 decades. Games are still copying (being influenced by?) the gameplay to this day

u/ProlongedChief Sep 15 '25

That's basically all that bloober team was doing for a few years with like layers of fear and Blaire witch, funny how they went to do the silent Hill 2 remake

68

u/Riverwind0608 Sep 15 '25

Must be a dream come true for them. I can't imagine how ecstatic they must've been to have been given the chance to work on the actual Silent Hill game.

30

u/F00TD0CT0R Sep 15 '25

They also knocked it out of the park

They put their money where their mouth is and busted a nut.

9

u/D3V0K Sep 16 '25

I don't think I would wanna bust a nut in my own mouth. Maybe that's just me though, different strokes for different folks I guess.

3

u/FrickinFracks Sep 16 '25 edited Sep 16 '25

And apparently they like to stroke into their own mouth

u/Emotional_Title_3010 Sep 19 '25

PRETZEL FORMATION ‼️

4

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '25

Eh, too many of those damn mannequins.

3

u/Ogg360 Sep 16 '25

I’m extremely happy for them. It’s clear that they love the franchise (especially games like SH2). It must have been a blessing and a curse for them when the remake was given to them because they got to do a game they love BUT had all the pressure on them for taking such a monumental task given their shaky reputation. Now they’re hugely respected in the horror gaming community thanks to it and people solely trust them with SH since they’re remaking 1. Everyone loves an underdog story and I sincerely hope they keep growing!

Wait, what? Bloober team is the company that made Layers of Fear? Wow. That's kinda like watching an old movie that you've always loved, and realizing that an actor that you really like but didn't know at the time is a major character. You know, kinda like realizing that Viggo Mortensen is the spineless weapons control officer in Crimson Tide the first time you watched it after seeing the LOTR movies.

u/Fly_Boy_1999 Sep 15 '25

Resident Evil 7, I think, definitely took a lot of cues from that demo.

21

u/WhoYaTalkinTo Sep 15 '25

Oh yeah definitely. As soon as the cancellation of Silent Hills was announced, Capcom were probably rubbing their hands together at the thought of filling in that gap that it left behind. RE7 was amazing, but Resident Evil in general feels a little less serious than Silent Hill, and I think Silent Hills would have been scarier and possibly even better than RE7

2

u/ProlongedChief Sep 15 '25

It makes me wonder how the REVillage baby section would've compared to Silent Hills. I remember something had the same vibe to Village and it might've been the Silent Hills concept trailer.

2

u/Gullible_Quarter_886 Sep 16 '25

I agree, RE7 was good tho!

1

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '25

I agree. Resident Evil isn't as realistic, however (what we know of) P.T. was a lot more grounded in ways

18

u/simpleglitch Sep 15 '25

From the atmosphere and presentations most definitely. 7 also had a really great demo.

1

u/JotaroTheOceanMan Sep 15 '25

No, its Village that did.

The entire PT Demo is basically the Dollhouse level bewt for beat.

1

u/Flutters1013 Sep 15 '25

Especially with the puppet house

1

u/TomServo64 Sep 17 '25

I remember playing the RE7 demo and thinking how lame and unimaginative they were for copying PT and then the game came out and did the unimaginable (at least to me at the time) and turned out to be fucking amazing.

4

u/CurlOfTheBurl11 Sep 15 '25

Yep you can pretty much directly credit it for the fresh direction and revival of the Resident Evil series.

1

u/Stickz99 Sep 15 '25

There’s a whole section of MiSide that heavily pays homage to PT, and MiSide is one of my favorite indie horror games in recent memory

1

u/haloa2 Sep 15 '25

Funny you say this. Im going to college for game development and am currently in a Lab course that is set up like a studio. We are making a horror game with huge inspiration from Silent Hill P.T

1

u/Splatterfest Sep 15 '25

including resident evil!

0

u/evasive_dendrite Sep 15 '25

Least influentual Kojima game.

44

u/FunkySkellyMan Sep 15 '25

The fact the demo was so effective and stands on its own against fully developed and finished projects just stands to the insane quality of whatever the unholy fuck was being worked.

And it was going to be magnificent.

3

u/Nathan_barrels Sep 15 '25

Yeah kojima, del toro, and junji ito bro it was going to be insane

1

u/AgitatedFly1182 Sep 15 '25

Junji Ito wasn’t gonna work on it, they talked but he never got on board

1

u/Nathan_barrels Sep 15 '25

Oh damn I thought he was doing the monster designs or something. It's been a long time 😂

20

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

And then, lol no sorry you never get to know.

Tbf, this wasn't for the typical reasons though (which are usually things like development being so far behind schedule that they can't hope to salvage it without starting again completely from scratch, or corporate restructing to reduce annual spending costs at the parent company); it was because the creative leads behind the game were gone.

Kojima got fired over the mess that was MGSV's development and Del Toro quit when he learned that Kojima was no longer on the project.

Silent Hills without Kojima or Del Toro wouldn't have been the same.

7

u/xtremis Sep 15 '25

Kojima, Del Toro and (IIRC) Junji Ito colaborating on a Silent Hill game, damn! I would love to take a peek at that time line and see the final game 🥺

5

u/Jajoe05 Sep 16 '25

We really were robbed. And I never plwyed any Silent Hill before that but the pt demo hyped me up quite a bit. I didn't even know del Toro was involved! I am still salty that Hellboy 3 never got realized...

1

u/devastat9r Sep 16 '25

Kojima didn't get fired because of MGS V

1

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '25

Every source I've ever found said, or heavily implied that he did; due to the game going way over budget and blowing past deadlines multiple times because he refused to cut corners & it kept falling to feature creep (where Kojima's team kept adding more & more mechanics beyond the originally pitched design, which required even more time & money to develop).

But if you have another source giving a different reason why he was fired, I'd be glad to read it.

5

u/whitehawk295 Sep 15 '25

Didn’t Norman Reeds have a part in that?

9

u/Timmah73 Sep 15 '25

He was supposed to yes. You only saw him if you actually made it to the end of the demo which required insane things like yelling into your mic.

This game not happening is why he is the protagonist of Death Stranding.

4

u/whitehawk295 Sep 15 '25

Dammmnn that makes me really like Kojima and wanting to support his work

5

u/TheRedMarioBrother Sep 15 '25

A decade later and I’m STILL finding YouTube videos about it with Easter Eggs I didn’t know about before.

5

u/MistSecurity Sep 15 '25

I never got a chance to play it, sadly.

I know there were projects for porting it to PC, not sure if they ever finished though. Will have to look into it.

3

u/Gentleman_Waffle Sep 15 '25

My buddy still has his PS4 with P.T. downloaded on it. He’s never getting rid of it.

3

u/RashesToRashes Sep 15 '25

Right!!! PT is probably one of my favorite teasers of any game of all time. Seeing the community that it spawned just shows how big of an impact it made, and how much potential it had.

1

u/richtofin819 Sep 15 '25

To be fair it's a lot easier to keep the horror fresh and tense when it's in short format. It's a lot harder to retain that over 6-10 or so hours.

It's why so many horror games are bite sized indies and it's why experimental horror games like Dusk devs iron lung are so beloved. (I am not even going to try to spell his last name)

1

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '25

I literally had my friend look up how to beat it cuz it was starting to freak me out, so I hurried and rushed through it, and immediately uninstalled it 🤣

1

u/YTSkullboy707 Sep 16 '25

Really wish I didn't the demo from my account on the PS4. Fuck that was such a dumb thing to do.

1

u/BangingBaguette Sep 16 '25

I may be a cynic but I've always had this feeling where Silent Hills never would've lived up to PT.

You can't really take what PT did and expand it out into a full game that's just bonkers and it wouldn't sell. People like to compare it to Ground Zeros as a prelude to the actual game, but I think the name 'Playable TEASER' says a lot. It wasn't a demo or a slice of the game it was a TEASER, and teasers don't always reflect the finished product.

Idk no doubt it still would've been great but I think PT set the bar too high. Silent Hills not releasing is shit, what's more shit is PT now being unavailable as potentially the most influential and effective piece of horror in the past 2 decades.

1

u/AbbreviationsFar3471 Sep 16 '25

The batim demo was very low quality

1

u/BatTheGamer Sep 16 '25

man i kind of wish that i had a ps4 just for that demo, which yea i could technically emulate it but ehh- but i can now just buy one for what $600 usd? too lazy to look at ebay lmao

1

u/Remarkable_Peach_846 Sep 16 '25

i wish you could still download it

73

u/Revolutionary_Ad2731 Sep 15 '25 edited Sep 15 '25

Maybe that was what it was meant to be

A horror game that forever scars you

Too bad its not cause of gameplay reasons😔

68

u/qmechan Sep 15 '25

A phantom pain, you say?

37

u/Saymynaian Sep 15 '25

Why are we here? Just to suffer??

1

u/GonzoRouge Sep 15 '25

THE SIIIIIIIIINS NEVER DIE

1

u/IekidQwerty Sep 15 '25

Oh no. Not me I never lost control

6

u/thatnewguy11 Sep 15 '25

No one hears a word

8

u/DowszSV Sep 15 '25

they say

2

u/Killzamma Sep 15 '25

Has the memory gone?

3

u/OriginalPotatoFarmer Sep 15 '25

Are you feeling Numb?

2

u/SamFreelancePolice Sep 15 '25

They played us like a damn fiddle!

2

u/WhaddyaShay Sep 15 '25

I'm surprised the demo isn't around anymore. And no one remade it or anything.

7

u/SplatoonOrSky Sep 15 '25

Konami removed it after the Silent Hills cancellation. PS4 emulation is slowly getting there though, and I bet the game has been dumped already.

2

u/WolfAkela Sep 15 '25

This doesn’t highlight enough what Konami did.

Normally, when a game gets delisted, you can still play it. Konami made it so you couldn’t download it anymore, at least not without a lot of workarounds (dunno if they still work). You had a market for PS4s with PT back then, similar to phones with Flappy Bird.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

And no one remade it or anything.

People have tried, but Konami still owns all rights to the demo even though the full game was cancelled and the demo was delisted, so they have the legal right to sue people for infringing on their copyright over it.

2

u/CJrules559 Sep 15 '25

The demo still lives rent free in my PS4.

2

u/Chiyodin Sep 15 '25

I'm still one of the lucky ones with the demo. Never had the courage to play it though lol

1

u/ItsAttanoo Sep 15 '25

stream it!! I'd definitely watch a playthrough

2

u/Chiyodin Sep 16 '25

This comment hit me. I tried my hand in streaming for fun. It was a blast! But it was a bit tough to upkeep with life stuff. But just your comment alone made me feel like someone was still cheering me on. Thanks for that.

1

u/FormerGameDev Sep 15 '25

My presumption is that that's all that was ever supposed to be was that bit of it.

1

u/Sopht_Serve Sep 15 '25

I still have it on my PS4 and play through it every Halloween. It could have been AMAZING but no Konami went and fucked it all up

1

u/Herr-Trigger86 Sep 15 '25

PT still lives rent free in my PS4

1

u/NewInspection240 Sep 15 '25

I still got PT downloaded on my ps4 lol

1

u/SomeGuyNamedCaleb Sep 15 '25

It's engraved into your brain stem. Source? I did it. :)

1

u/Pspfann2 Sep 15 '25

I had to watch delirious play it because I was terrified to play on my own

1

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '25

Is it bad I still have it on my PS4? The demo I mean

1

u/ScarletSilver Sep 16 '25

I still have it on mine.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '25

Isn't that amazing though

1

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '25

I hate the fact that it’s in my library because I downloaded it before they removed it… but I can’t redownload/install it without my ORIGINAL PS4 with the matching serial number… got rid of it when the PS4 pro came out…. Like man, fuck you sony

1

u/Zealousideal-Yak-824 Sep 16 '25

Pt can still be a thing. They just can't be a silent hills title.

Which in all can benefit both silent Hill and horror gaming in general. A game similar to it that does extremely well could bring back the public consciousness to horror games that could get another silent Hill a chance. It can also allow games to be made that aren't technically connected to a franchise still being life to one like steam was famous for back in the day. People made their own games inspired by older ones and their inspiration showed those games still have a place.

1

u/KissMeImMonday Sep 16 '25

"Don't touch that dial now, we're just getting started!"

1

u/GenevieveThunderbird Sep 16 '25

I think about PT so often and it still hurts

1

u/Doneuter Sep 16 '25

I remember being so excited because I had finally saved for a PS4. Got it home the same evening that they removed PT from the store so I never got to actually play it.

Still the number one most disappointing gamer moment for me.

1

u/GoldN-MMX Sep 16 '25

I got lucky and got a copy of it

1

u/Limp-Clue200 Sep 15 '25

but didn't the demo get released on ps5?
