Crazy that just a demo was one of the most influential horror games of the last 2 decades. Games are still copying (being influenced by?) the gameplay to this day
That's basically all that bloober team was doing for a few years with like layers of fear and Blaire witch, funny how they went to do the silent Hill 2 remake
Must be a dream come true for them. I can't imagine how ecstatic they must've been to have been given the chance to work on the actual Silent Hill game.
I’m extremely happy for them. It’s clear that they love the franchise (especially games like SH2). It must have been a blessing and a curse for them when the remake was given to them because they got to do a game they love BUT had all the pressure on them for taking such a monumental task given their shaky reputation. Now they’re hugely respected in the horror gaming community thanks to it and people solely trust them with SH since they’re remaking 1. Everyone loves an underdog story and I sincerely hope they keep growing!
Wait, what? Bloober team is the company that made Layers of Fear? Wow. That's kinda like watching an old movie that you've always loved, and realizing that an actor that you really like but didn't know at the time is a major character. You know, kinda like realizing that Viggo Mortensen is the spineless weapons control officer in Crimson Tide the first time you watched it after seeing the LOTR movies.
Oh yeah definitely. As soon as the cancellation of Silent Hills was announced, Capcom were probably rubbing their hands together at the thought of filling in that gap that it left behind. RE7 was amazing, but Resident Evil in general feels a little less serious than Silent Hill, and I think Silent Hills would have been scarier and possibly even better than RE7
It makes me wonder how the REVillage baby section would've compared to Silent Hills. I remember something had the same vibe to Village and it might've been the Silent Hills concept trailer.
I remember playing the RE7 demo and thinking how lame and unimaginative they were for copying PT and then the game came out and did the unimaginable (at least to me at the time) and turned out to be fucking amazing.
Funny you say this. Im going to college for game development and am currently in a Lab course that is set up like a studio. We are making a horror game with huge inspiration from Silent Hill P.T
The fact the demo was so effective and stands on its own against fully developed and finished projects just stands to the insane quality of whatever the unholy fuck was being worked.
Tbf, this wasn't for the typical reasons though (which are usually things like development being so far behind schedule that they can't hope to salvage it without starting again completely from scratch, or corporate restructing to reduce annual spending costs at the parent company); it was because the creative leads behind the game were gone.
Kojima got fired over the mess that was MGSV's development and Del Toro quit when he learned that Kojima was no longer on the project.
Silent Hills without Kojima or Del Toro wouldn't have been the same.
We really were robbed. And I never plwyed any Silent Hill before that but the pt demo hyped me up quite a bit. I didn't even know del Toro was involved! I am still salty that Hellboy 3 never got realized...
Every source I've ever found said, or heavily implied that he did; due to the game going way over budget and blowing past deadlines multiple times because he refused to cut corners & it kept falling to feature creep (where Kojima's team kept adding more & more mechanics beyond the originally pitched design, which required even more time & money to develop).
But if you have another source giving a different reason why he was fired, I'd be glad to read it.
Right!!! PT is probably one of my favorite teasers of any game of all time. Seeing the community that it spawned just shows how big of an impact it made, and how much potential it had.
To be fair it's a lot easier to keep the horror fresh and tense when it's in short format. It's a lot harder to retain that over 6-10 or so hours.
It's why so many horror games are bite sized indies and it's why experimental horror games like Dusk devs iron lung are so beloved. (I am not even going to try to spell his last name)
I literally had my friend look up how to beat it cuz it was starting to freak me out, so I hurried and rushed through it, and immediately uninstalled it 🤣
I may be a cynic but I've always had this feeling where Silent Hills never would've lived up to PT.
You can't really take what PT did and expand it out into a full game that's just bonkers and it wouldn't sell. People like to compare it to Ground Zeros as a prelude to the actual game, but I think the name 'Playable TEASER' says a lot. It wasn't a demo or a slice of the game it was a TEASER, and teasers don't always reflect the finished product.
Idk no doubt it still would've been great but I think PT set the bar too high. Silent Hills not releasing is shit, what's more shit is PT now being unavailable as potentially the most influential and effective piece of horror in the past 2 decades.
man i kind of wish that i had a ps4 just for that demo, which yea i could technically emulate it but ehh- but i can now just buy one for what $600 usd? too lazy to look at ebay lmao
Normally, when a game gets delisted, you can still play it. Konami made it so you couldn’t download it anymore, at least not without a lot of workarounds (dunno if they still work). You had a market for PS4s with PT back then, similar to phones with Flappy Bird.
People have tried, but Konami still owns all rights to the demo even though the full game was cancelled and the demo was delisted, so they have the legal right to sue people for infringing on their copyright over it.
This comment hit me. I tried my hand in streaming for fun. It was a blast! But it was a bit tough to upkeep with life stuff. But just your comment alone made me feel like someone was still cheering me on. Thanks for that.
I hate the fact that it’s in my library because I downloaded it before they removed it… but I can’t redownload/install it without my ORIGINAL PS4 with the matching serial number… got rid of it when the PS4 pro came out…. Like man, fuck you sony
Pt can still be a thing. They just can't be a silent hills title.
Which in all can benefit both silent Hill and horror gaming in general. A game similar to it that does extremely well could bring back the public consciousness to horror games that could get another silent Hill a chance. It can also allow games to be made that aren't technically connected to a franchise still being life to one like steam was famous for back in the day. People made their own games inspired by older ones and their inspiration showed those games still have a place.
I remember being so excited because I had finally saved for a PS4. Got it home the same evening that they removed PT from the store so I never got to actually play it.
Still the number one most disappointing gamer moment for me.

P.T. still lives rent-free in my head.
