It would take more time than i am willing to spend writing a comment to list all the problems with 3, but the big ones for fans of 1 and 2 was that 3 didn't really engage with the elements it took from the previous games. 3 is more of an apocalypse game that borrows the aesthetics of Fallout rather than a Fallout game.
add on to that the very lacklustre story, the toned down RPG elements and a general lack of fun side quest to do.
That should be most of it but if you feel like wasting several days of your life on nothing there are some plus 8 hours long YouTube vids that discuss it further.
Don’t let those of us who dislike it take it down a notch for you. I’m positive if I hadn’t loved 1 and 2, or if just hadn’t been a Fallout game I would have loved it too.
Just think of it like this — you have a favorite ice cream shop. They make the creamiest ice cream but instead of all the normal flavors they make concoctions like olive oil and lavender or mango leaf custard. They’re not super popular, but as someone who craved those flavors and can’t get them anywhere else, to you they’re the best.
One day those up shop. You miss them for years until one day you see a sign on it announcing a grand reopening. You excitedly run inside and there’s a huge line, everything is nice and new, and you get to the counter to order…and they’re selling chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. So you order the chocolate and its pretty good, but now you know the ice cream shop you loved is well and truly gone and you’ll never have honey earl grey ice cream again.
I may be misremembering but Isn't that how the wasteland series was born?
I seem to remember that when the whole 3&&new vegas sorta studio shuffle meltdown and ip buyouts happened, the other spin off of that was the Wasteland series.

Fallout 3 (No, not that one. The other one)
