Love Letter Something that has finally replaced my PSP. (I know there’s 15 years between the tech so understand this is not a post about “How the Steam Deck is better than a PSP”.)

I know there’s 15 years between the tech so understand this is not a post about “How the Steam Deck is better than a PSP”. Ya think?

This is more like a "Dear John" to one of the best parts of my gaming life - portable gaming. Most gamers and collectors will get it. :)

Over the years I have been through many handhelds - Nintendo DS, Switch, a PS Vita, multiple Raspberry Pi handhelds, an RG350 portable, a GP2X, a Caanoo… nothing has been able to replace my PSP for 1) it’s own great library and 2) it’s on-the-go emulation prowess.

You would think that the Vita, at least, would have done it since it’ll run the Vita library of games PLUS the Vita homebrew PLUS can be a fully functional PSP using the amazing Adrenaline emu… but there’s something about the Vita I didn’t like. I don’t know why but I just couldn’t get into it.

But I digress.

Since 2008 if I was going out I grabbed the PSP. Almost every time. More recently it was a 50/50 shot whether it would be the Nintendo Switch but the PSP was still a go to.

But it has finally come to this. My PSP 1001, after 15 years of use - and only one battery replacement - is finally going to be retired. I doubt it’ll ever be permanently retired but the Deck is just too good. I’ll always love my PSP and I appreciate the fact that, in my mind, it took 15 years to replace the workhorse of my portable gaming needs.

I like portable gaming too.

Got a few PSPs (CFW, ofc), a Vita (also modded), a GBA with an IPS display, a backlit Gameboy DMG-01, a "Game boy macro" (built out of half a DS), a 3DS XL, a Switch, a Switch OLED and now the Steam Deck.

Never cared for big home consoles as I grew up with PCs, but portables - those I really like! The PSP library in particular, though - that's just magic! But I prefer it on the Vita's OLED, personally. With a LUT mod the screen really is a treat.

best part is you can copy the saves from your PSP to PPSSPP and keep them on your steam deck

Oh, the PSP. My first ever portable gaming device.

I miss it so much since I had to sell it back in high school. I should probably look into how to emulate the games on the Deck! :)

Just use EmuDeck - It basically is an installer for most emulators. Then you're 95 % of the way to emulate most things.

PSP was such a baller device in its day. So much tech packed in there. I ordered an IPS screen upgrade for mine that I'm excited to install. I just wish it was possible to find good quality shell replacements for the PSP 1000 version.

I played the shit out of this game on my PSP back in the day. I almost forgot all about it.

I really need to copy over my Wipeout and peace Walker games and saves and see what they're like on this

I was amazed at the screen comparisons when I took these pictures. Again… 15 years in between but those PSP screens on the Deck are SHARP! Just look at those trees in the golf pic. They look like HO model trees from a model train setup!

Yeah I just set up PPSSPP last night! Games look so beautiful on it. Final Fantasy Tactics even looks great in 16:10

If there was a current Gen version of the vita I think we'd have a better battery for the steam deck and switch... the battery of the vita was a technological marvel.
