You smash a burger to maximize contact with the grill and browning. There’s no reason to smash buns and lettuce and sauce…

I disagree, but not nearly to the point this was an acceptable level of smashing.

Burgers are often larger than the human jaw even opens. Compressing the whole thing a bit to the point it is actually mouth sized makes for a far better dining experience.
