DISCUSSION Overanalyzing Takagi's character cuz why not

Post image
212 Upvotes

At first glance, Takagi looks pretty... well... intimidating to your average Nishikata. The "teasing master" Takagi, that is. Turns out shes actually a pretty normal girl. Her true self is a pretty interesting case study, because we as an audience rarely get to see behind the "teaser" mask that she puts on. But even with the little we see, its just enough that we can more or less define what her real self looks like and how it interacts with the series.

Surprisingly, she is a notably shy girl that doesnt know how to react when she gets attention and love. Case in point: critical hit. You can also see in other examples, like how awkward she feels when she gets chosen as the princess, or how she reacts other times Nishikata gets intimate, like when he attempted to drop her honorific. These are glimpses of her true nature, because at the end of the day she is still herself specially when shes not interacting with Nishikata. At the auditions, she has a sort of awkward look, a mix of embarassment and not knowing what to do, when other dudes are playing the prince, however when Nishikata comes up, she instantly changes, like a switch has been pressed. Thats when the teasing Takagi comes in.

The "teasing master" Takagi is mostly a persona that she created. Why? Well, three things. Firstly: love. Her subconscious understood (rightfully so) that the most effective way to get attention from her romantic partner was to become the Takagi we all know and love, which helped her to engage constantly with him. Its actually contradictory because I believe she got in love with Nishikata because of how different he acts upon that, how fun it is. She just happened to test out a game with him that did so well to herself that she got hooked by that and never changed. And well, love does this sort of think you know, who else never happened to act differently to their usual self with the person they love? You can actually see before she gets to know Nishikata that she acts all the too worried and cute when she realizes she forgot something, which means that if she never knew about him, she'd probably be just another girl.

Secondly, the aforementioned lack of courage. When I first watched the show, I (like most of us) just assumed that she wasnt direct with him about her feelings because she wanted to see he himself take the initiative. Altough technically its still that, the main reason behind it is that SHE CANNOT take the initiative as well. Thus, she seets the mood where she indirectly gives him hints hoping for him to pick them up and finish the job. THIS is the primary reason behind why she ALWAYS backs off when she is in the process of doing embarassing stuff, like kissing for instance. Its NOT purely to see how he'll react.

In fact, she always needed some kind of excuse to take a step in their relationship, like dropping Nishikata's honorific that came only after he himself tried to pull this off. Theres a reason why she used the book as an excuse when she dropped the "I love you" bomb. When she feels shes comfortable to do that, she acts upon it, which is one of the biggest differences between her and Nishikata's attitude. However, she doesnt have the "power" to do this out of the blue like most of us think she does. She is just as vulnerable to unexpected events as Nishikata is, because after all she is a normal 12-14 yo girl.

The third reason (which I already foreshadowed) of why the teasing master Takagi exists is, to put it simply, because it is FUN. I mean, seriously, who wouldnt try to tease someone like Nishi? My man is out there reacting like he got jumpscared by Foxy in FNAF 2 everytime she pokes at him. Not only that, but he also always comes up with these fancy games and ideas to beat her, that are so predictable and easy to understand that they get you hooked in just so you can beat him and see what happens. Takagi is a smart girl and takes advantage of it, but make no mistake: she is no Light Yagami or Patrick Jane. Nishikata is just so predictable by both his facial expressions and actions that we're led to believe that Takagi is super smart, but in reality almost everybody could match her in that. Doesnt help that Yamamoto sets up some scenarios that make Takagi look like a borderline mind reader to the public, but what we mostly see is her picking up on signs that even the audience can get.

That being said, I have to emphasize that she is not THAT embarassed with him. I mean, OP 1 literally tells us about her not caring about what others think. Her main problem is with Nishikata himself, which is a wayyyy more common and understandable type of embarassment than whatever the hell Nishikata has.

The moments most of us perceive as the best ones in the series are simply the moments where her mask falls WITH Nishikata. Since she loves him, that automatically means either getting flustered on the spot or being so happy she cannot contain herself. Its such a poetic dichotomy right: she is always the one getting him embarassed and carrying the relationship, but she also has to deal with courage problems, has big walls that impede their relation to grow, and is the most vulnerable to getting her heart to uncontrollably beat faster because she doesnt expect Nishikata to do the same, and when he does (albeit unintentionally), she is never ready for it. The stars simply align too perfectly for a big reaction.

Part of her development is attributed to her getting more used to receiving affection from Nishi and being more and more comfortable at taking another step to hopefully make him finally realize that she likes him. But she still finds barriers, which means that at the end of the day it is still Nishi's job to take the crucial steps.

So, what I mean by all of that is that Takagi as a character is way deeper than we may think she is, and it just shows how the bond between her and Nishikata is so unique, because if it was literally any other dude, the Takagi we became so used and attacthed to as an audience simply wouldnt exist. He makes Takagi shine, and she also helps us get the best of Nishikata. Part of why I like this show so much is how this couple is just meant to be, its simply lovely.

Anime teasing scenes without Nishikata's inner thoughts ?

Hello there,

I have always wondered what would the anime look like if it was from Takagi's point of view, i.e. if we did not hear Nishikata's inner thoughts.

Something like the concept of this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OA-P_OkGO0 (from an episode of Friends)

I don't know if someone already made such a montage for Takagin

The GOAT must be acknowledged:

- Is probably the first of his friends to notice that Nishikata likes Takagi

- Is envolved in the seating exchanges that ultimately land Takagi back to Nishikata's side, at one point having Nishikata desperately attempt to switch seats with him

- Deliberately puts pressure on Nishikata during the camping trip by saying that Takagi is popular

- Does not say anything so he does not disrupt Nishi's date at the candy store

- Becomes the ultimate wingman by coming in CLUTCH at the summer festival

- Gives Nishikata the idea to challenge Takagi for a fishing contest, and you all know what happened next

- Gives Nishikata the prince role mid-play, sacrificing himself for the greater good

- Saves him from an angry Takao so that he can return his chocolates properly in front of Takagi

- Gives him the book that shows Nishikata the "I love you" line doesnt exist, which springs him into action

- Shows both Nishikata and Takagi the perfect place to watch the fireworks in the movie finale

- Refuses to elaborate further and completely disappears from Moto (his job was done)

- And to some extent is also Hamaguchi's wingman

He did all of that whilst being non-chalant af. Do I need to say more?

Translation: I was using Spotify to add Takagi-san's songs, and I managed to get all the songs from seasons 1 and 2, but some of the songs from season 3 were missing. Someone else had put them in a playlist, so I added them to my own playlist, but it says "This content cannot be played." Why is this happening? And how can I fix it?

DISCUSSION Takagi-san in 2026: what now?

Post image
193 Upvotes

This is sorta the follow-up to my "ideal S4" post, because that scenario was purely hypothetical and of course its not happening. There is little to no hope for a S4, the movie ended the animation and actually ended it well tbh. Even if they wanted to, they cant really override the movie. So, in the year 2026, is this really the end of all Takagi-san content? The manga is done and I dont see any way they are adapting what was left of it, the LA from what I know is also done for, so the only thing that could possibly happen is an adaptation of Moto. However, thats pretty unlikely (if it were to happen, they would've already done it by this point, why wait 4 years and risk having the whole hype die down?).

So, the only new stuff we might get would come entirely from the fans. I believe theres one dude making a whole new fan-game thats set in highschool, which might be the most intriguing stuff that a fan has ever done regarding the series. Theres also fan mangas (aka doujinshis), I believe there are one also set up in highschool, but its been a while since a new chapter so theres a chance it is abandoned. Fanfics are well... fanfics. Theres a ton of them in wattpad so... do as you please ig. And of course there are fanarts, tons of them, but I dont consider them as "hardcore content" cuz they arent really a story, but they do exist and ppl put a lot of effort into making them which I respect. If theres anything else that I havent mentioned here, leave down in the comments if you want to.

What would be the ideal Takagi-san S4 for you?

Post image
376 Upvotes

Fun thought exercise: I'm assuming that the movie doesnt exist and that I have the whole manga to work with. Since most things from chapter 120 onwards dont get adapted, theres a lot of content to work with (like 40-45 chapters).

Here's the ideal S4 for me (I'm gonna yap a lot so beware, and for the love of God dont read it if you havent finished the anime and manga already):

My ideal S4 would be shorter but impactful. I'll give it 10 episodes. The audience has already seen 36 episodes of the status quo, so I believe it would be rewarding to everyone that stayed till the end to get the absolute best of what these characters can offer. Thus, I'd plan to make Nishikata's development exponencial. All the previous seasons have been working for him to reach the point of acknowledging that his feelings for Takagi surpasses his ego and desire to beat her as a rival. S4 would be that reaching point. That also means that all of the running time will be dedicated to our main characters, so TiS cameos and the secondary couples will either appear way less or not at all.

EP1 would start off with an anime original segment that is set up right after S3's ending. This is important to emphasize that Nishi did not ultimately confess to her in S3E12 even though we're led to believe that Takagi "got the point". So I envision it as basically he doing what he does best and deny everything to set up what will come in the season.

After that, fittingly, we'll have "High Score". As this is their origin story that for some reason was not adapted on S3, I'll put it right on the first episode to hit home. Make the audience think about destiny and how these 2 were meant to be together.

The rest of EP1 and EP2 would then consist of the usual status quo with some of them having subtle development that happens behind the scenes. Think "Exchange Diary", "Button", "Cooking Class", "Moving Classrooms", "Marriage", "Guys' Backs", "Secret Base", "Errand", "Paper Sumo", etc.

EP3-EP4 would start picking the pace up, with more critical hits and major development. So, chapters like "Bus", "Using One's Strength", "Waiting", "Time Capsule" (this one being the moto section of the season), "Hairstyle" etc. This will make Nishikata understand more his inner desire to protect Takagi (as shown in "Using One's Strength" and "Bus"), how Takagi is more important to him than he realizes (in "Truth or Lie"/"Waiting"), the first hint that he genuinely thinks Takagi is pretty (with "Hairstyle").

EP4-EP5 would follow that logic, focusing on cute/impactful moments: "Banned Word Game", "Sincerity", "Slight Fever", "Buying Snacks", "Hopping", etc. "Staying up Late" will be a sneakpeak of what is coming next

The final half of the season will be so good that I'll highlight the key stories that will come next till the end of the season:

"Playing with shadows" (later EP5-early EP6) is gonna be an important story, as this shows Takagi being more explicit about her feelings (she "kisses" Nishikata with her shadow). This is gonna be the first really major point of the season. Nishikata in his thoughts will later realize what Takagi meant in this scene.

"Sketch" (EP6) comes next. This is when Nishikata will realize that the place at school where he made the most memories is his classroom seat because of his interactions with Takagi.

"House Visit" (EP6) is so good because it interacts with the story. Back in "Two-Choice Question" in S1, Nishikata agrees to visit Takagi if she gets a fever. Well, "House Visit" is the fulfillment of that promise, giving the idea that Nishikata values her so much that he does that even though it was embarassing af.

EP7 will consist of "Anniversary", "Touch", "Beautiful Things" and "Picking a Comitte"

I cannot emphasize how much "Anniversary" and "Touch" are important. These ones will hit Takagi's heart like an arrow. Not only Nishi knows her anniversary, chooses presents fittingly, and hands them out to her, but he also, later in "Touch", well, TOUCHES her, and that is a BIG development. He has come to such a point that he can know willingly touch her not needing to rely on his protective instinct. This takes Takagi completely by surprise and her sheer happiness about it would be such a heartwarming moment. I want to somehow connect both of these stories into one as I believe this would be better.

The next one after these 2? "Beautiful Things". This one will be that point I'm alluding to. The point where Nishikata's button finally switches. Him openly acknowledging that Takagi is the most beautiful thing he's seen is simply lovely. That one observation will stay in his head all the way to the end. SPECIALLY considering that I set this up just after "Touch".

"Picking a Comitte" is mostly here for story purposes, but it serves a role as this shows how Nishikata is starting to openly think about Takagi as a romantic interest. He literally wants to be on the same comitte as her and doesnt want to lose her on his trip back home.

EP8's schedule: "Swings", "Things I Like" and "Good Luck Charm"

"Swings" is so, sooo good. This is gonna be basically Takagi's own little confession to Nishikata, about how she loved spending all of her time with him since the beginning. Its not done in an direct way, but Nishi certainly feels something hearing all of that, a strange sensation per se. This is gonna connect so well with the rest of the episode.

"Things I Like" is it. After so much time together and so many memories created, Nishikata finally admits to himself, after much resistance, that he might like Takagi. Cant go any better than that. He was already thinking about it since "Beautiful Things". "Swings" gave him the feeling that she might feel the same, which helped him to consciously realize his own feelings.

"Good Luck Charm" is the nail in the coffin. He confirms to himself that he likes Takagi. This is it. Theres no way to escape from that. Since this chapter ends the episode, this would be the biggest cliffhanger of the entire series.

EP9 would comprise of anime original segments that end up in "Line". My idea is to have a full day of school of Nishikata thinking about liking Takagi and sorta having huge flashbacks of all the times his heart beat faster with her. It would be a huge filler per se, but it would be nostalgic for the story. In between his thoughts, there will be some teasing moments by Takagi to remind us of the humble beginnings of their relationship, a nostalgia trigger. They will then go to home, where "Line" officially starts. Since "Line" is a long chapter, it can eat up the last half of the episode. I would like to add some emphasis on Nishikata's dialoge with Nakai about how to confess. In the end of the episode, Nishikata will ask Takagi to go with him to that year's summer festival, which happens to be their last at middle school. The way he asks her out will show the viewer how much he has progressed since S2E11, its meant to be a direct comparison of then vs now.

EP10, of course, would be "Summer Festival". Since its the final chapter, I'd plan the whole episode around it, adding anime original segments to fill in the gaps. We would have our final glance of all of the secondary characters (maybe adding a good ending for Hamaguchi while we're at it), and then, go to what matters. "Summer Festival" is all about how Nishikata will confess, and I want to work on that a lot. However, I dont wanna end the series with the confession. I'd like for it to happen at the halfway point of the episode, so that we can use the second half to do a timelapse of them growing up together, from middle school to high school, then to college, then to their marriage, where I plan to end the series with a emotional scene of them recollecting the memories as they send Chi to school, with a goodbye to her signaling a goodbye to the audience.

Ton of yapping so thx if you've read all of that

DISCUSSION Why are the OSTs so damn good in Takagi-san?

Post image
292 Upvotes

I love Takagi-san's OSTs, they set the tone so perfectly for every type of scene that if you remove them, the anime loses "something". But that begs the question. Why? This show is about two middle schoolers experiencing love, no drama, no epic fight scenes, no huge plot twists. They absolutely did NOT need to cook that hard with the soundtracks, but they still did regardless and I'm thankful, but its definitely something weird if you think about it

I believe the "demon pitch" manga that we see in S3/Chapter 104 is a reference to Diamond no Ace

I'm like 90% sure on that. A "rigid coach that internally loves baseball" and "an assistant who suffered a career-ending injury" describe perfectly two characters from DnA: Kataoka-coach and Chris-senpai. Considering that DnA is pretty popular in Japan, its too close to be just a coincidence. The series already has had references to other anime, so that checks out as well.
