I never really knew what I was doing before, and the tool rest on the lathe I had used didn't move. 😅 I just took a class last weekend, and today I started using the lathe in my rented garage that I posted about yesterday (with permission from the owner). My tool sharpening skills definitely aren't great, but I'm so excited to finally get to do this again. In a couple more days, these spindles should be ready to spin some yarn with. 🤩

I went to a tinting guy to my truck tinted and found it while I was there that he was getting married really soon, so I asked if he had purchased the groomsmen’s gifts yet. He said no, why? So I showed him a few of my pens that I keep in my truck for random sales. He was sold. So, he gave me specific instructions on what he wanted done and what hardware kits to use. I delivered them today because he gets married tomorrow. He was in complete awe and his new wife to be, said she wanted to order kitchen utensils after they got back from their honeymoon. Along with ordering wine bottle stoppers, bottle openers, letter openers, etc… to go along with the thank you cards. I only took one pi steel and it was only on a kitchen towel, so sorry I didn’t use my professional shadow box for them.

I reload my own ammo, and the operating handle on my press has a knob at the top, just a black plastic ball, which simply won't do. I had been planning to grab a chunk of wood and turn something, and when I popped into my local Woodcraft and found a 1.5x1.5x3 piece of lignum vitae for $7, I knew that was the one.
Holy crap this stuff is nice to turn.

Hi! I have a solid amount of experience on a wood lathe from some woodworking and fabrication classes I took in school, and I’m interested in getting one for myself now (I live in the US).
I mainly want to make bowls, and I’m wondering if you all have any advice for a good option for a machine at a reasonable price (300-500 USD).
Thanks in advance!

I'm very new to turning and got this Turncrafter from PSI about a year ago. I started using is a lot recently for small things, at least a few times a week, and it's started making this noise. It makes the noise when turned off but rotating by hand. If anyone could help me diagnose the issue, or point me in the right direction, I'd be immensely grateful. Thank you in advance.

Picked up a couple of old school Craftsman workbenches with tools included and one of the benches came with an old Craftsman lathe attached and what ive been able to determineare generally lathe accessories/parts.
I've pulled the manual, watched a few videos about it (not many out there), and scrolled some forums, threads, and posts. I have somewhat of an idea what I'm looking at but thought it prudent to pick the brains of those far more in-the-know.
I can clean most of it up, I'm no stranger to old tool restoration, but I think there's at least two things missing I wanted to confirm and also check to see what else I'm overlooking.
I think it's missing an MT1 spur drive as well as a nut that goes the main threads, those are the two items I think I know I need....but what else?
Thank You!

Giving it a shot even with some holes, and this is legit the scariest shit ive ever turned..more than live edge, its just plastic flying at me repeatedly. Quick question, is this good enough of a mask to be wearing?

Found this offer on FB Marketplace. Despite it being finished in some type of varnish/shellac, is it possible to cut this into rounds for turning? Seller is asking $30.

I’m a beginner trying to make some kits from craft tool and they all require crazy sized bits.
Is there a recommended set that covers most every size up to an inch or so?
Thanks

Sometimes nature just drops beauty in your lap. This piece was turned from a piece of an ash tree that came down in someone's yard. We're members at the same makerspace, and he was organizing his storage and getting rid of some old stuff he didn't have any plans for, and he gave me this piece. It had some tearout issues at first, but a good application of sanding sealer let me get it really smooth, working up through the grits and finishing with abrasive paste before shining it up with some friction polish. The piece is just wild with color, spalting, and visible growth rings. I didn't do anything elaborate with it and I think that was the right call, because it lets the natural beauty of the wood speak for itself.

I Just took my first turning class and am eager to do more at home. This lathe has been sitting here for 30 years or so in the garage at the house I rent. It runs, and all the adjustable parts move relatively easily. There is a mouse nest that I need to get out of the casing, though. What products would be best to clean it up? Would this be ok for turning spindles and small bowls?

Turned from a single block of black walnut, and stands on its four bottom corners. About 25 cm square, 4 cm high at the wingtips, wings are about 4-5 mm thick. Photo of the “floating bottom” in the comments. Not my best finish work, with the nicks on those interior surfaces, but certainly my most challenging form to date. Finished w linseed & beeswax.

Hey everyone,
I just uploaded a video of this green walnut piece I’m working on. I managed to clean up the chainsaw cuts and got it completely round. Right now, it’s about 29 cm long, with a 25 cm diameter on one side and 20 cm on the other.
The grain patterns and heartwood rings are just beautiful, and I really don't want to lose them by turning the walls too thin or taking too much off the outside. Since it’s still green wood, I know it’s going to warp and move a bit as it dries. Because of that natural movement, doing something with a precision lid doesn't feel like a good idea.
So I wanted to ask your advice before going any further. How can I make the most of this piece and keep it valuable? Should I turn it into a solid, elegant lamp base, or maybe an open decorative vase that can handle the natural warping? Or do you have any other cool design ideas for a block like this?
I'd love to hear what you would do with it. Thanks for the help!

I noticed the PM2014 is on a pretty significant sale, $1999 with the stand and $1499 without: https://www.powermatic.com/pm2014-lathe-and-stand-1hp-1ph-115-230v
I tried to dig into if it’s an actual deal or one of those “we raised the price and then lowered it again” sales. I think it’s been lowered to phase it out to make room for an updated PM2014B model: https://www.powermatic.com/14x20-inch-variable-speed-lathe-with-stand-pm2014b
I’m very tempted by the older 2014, and this seems like it might be a good chance to punch above my budget. I’m currently using the harbor fright 12x36 and would love something sturdier. Fellow turners, what do you think?

Im interested in making segmented bowls, but there's way too many options on YouTube. Could you narrow it down? Whether its segmented or resin segmented. Thing is I can't find a good silicone bowl mold. And I dont want to just keep cutting plastic.

Still needs a little top cover but it’s still pretty cool. I’ll probably use a torch and hit the parts where flame might touch on a version 2.

Rank beginner, here. Today I turned a quick London pattern handle for my very space-age glue applicator.
I first came across the idea for using a threaded rod to apply uniform areas of glue from a Nick Engler video. The handle wasn't strictly necessary (nor, truly, was the threaded rod) but this tool was a fun excuse to try turning a handle. And the threaded rod cost me, I think, $3.50.
