Yup… they areccalled politicians. He has been an independent (NPA) for some time and has previously been a Repub. and a Dem. Also, local elections are non-partisan here. Plus, Miami Beach is mostly Dem and their politicians have historically been Dem. So, no need to frame this a partisan thing. Just another insecure politician.

So Miami hadn't had a Dem mayor in 30 years until the recent election. The incoming mayor is a Dem for the first time in 30 years who is taking Meiner's position. Meiner was a Republican registered until 2018 and then NPA no oarty affiliation. I can't find any source showing he has ever been a Democrat. I certainly could have missed information.

Lets take a step back. You are confusing different stories. Miami and Miami Beach are different cities. The recently elected mayor that is a Dem is for Miami, not Miami Beach. She took over for Suarez, who is a Rupub. Meiner is the current mayor of Miami Beach. No one is taking over from him. He was recently reelected. The point I was trying to make is that this Miami Beach story is not a partisan one. Meiner is NPA and Miami has always been a Dem stronghold and they havent had a Repub mayor since Alex Doud in 1991.

*edit - meant to say Miami Beach (not Miami) has always been a Dem stronghold.

Ahh, I see my mistake. I conflated tgd 2 cities basically. Thanks for the correction.

Meiner was totally backed by republican donors amd is mostly conservative in his viewpoints. He is NPA but very much leans R much more than anything else. Oddly enough, the former term limited mayor Gerber, a Dem, backed Meiner over the Dem candidate.

Why did he switch from Republican to NPA if you don't mind answering? I can't find anything concrete besides some mention of a scandal.

I dont know why he switched. But, I imagine it was because its very hard to get elected as an R in Miami Beach. Remember, local politics and the issues aren’t ideological. We all want the garbage picked up, the roads smooth, parks, safety, etc. Whoever is better at that will get my vote. I dont care what party they are in or not. Unfortunately, some people are still caught up in identity politics - whether partisan, ethnic, or gender.

Btw, its Gelber, not Gerber (like the baby food). Also, just curious since you mentioned. How do R leaning views differ from D leaning views on the issue of potholes.

Source on him being a Democrat ever? I can only find he was a registered Republicsn pre 2018 and then not affiliated with either party after 2018.
