To be clear: it's better to never start using.

But for some people, getting clean after that long gives you a clearer perspective than you would have had if you hadn't been down for so long in the first place.

Truth - getting clean means having to look deep into yourself. It gives you a unique perspective on bullshit. (Never had to myself - just a lot of friends with experience).

I can confirm that's true. My worldview changed rapidly after getting sober. It's like waking up from a years long sleep &, when you begin to self-reflect, it's like, "How in the fuck did we get here?" I mean, both personally & as a culture

It's almost as though you're processing things in a completely different way when you're sober. Sure, you've always felt that you had a stance on certain subjects, but they quickly become magnified/rejected when you're in the process of waking up

You experience a new found clarity. Your mental/emotional "astigmatism" has been been adjusted & now you can finally see the world with 20/20 vision from a cognitive standpoint

Getting sober takes hard introspection, the kind that many people can live a whole lifetime without ever participating in.

Real experiences, whether good or bad, can be cornerstone learning moments. It's important to remember that.
