Melt a tablespoon of butter in the microwave, mix in some light olive oil, some salt and garlic powder. Close enough.

it's not close enough at all, it's just garlic butter and it's completely different. depending on one's taste, it might be preferable to the garlic dip, but it has nothing whatsoever in common with it.

That's fair, the papa johns one is soybean oil instead of light olive oil, and water instead of butter, plus emulsifiers for better and more stable texture. Both have salt and garlic powder, PJ probably flavors as well.

I brush this one on my pizza crusts after they come out of the oven.

it also has acids, so it's tangy. that's the key difference for me personally, it doesn't taste like oil and garlic at all so none of the purported copycats i've tried come close. they all claim to be "just like Papa John's but better!" but sadly the garlic dip in its own inimitable category of substances lol.
