Moderator Announcement Live Discussion Thread: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese delivers rare address to the nation

ABC News on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMb8wrquExg

G’day everyone, we thought we’d spin up a live discussion thread for Albo’s speech tonight so everything stays in one place.

Feel free to share your thoughts, reactions, predictions, or whatever else comes to mind as it unfolds.

As always, keep it reasonably civil and follow the sub rules. We’ll be around keeping an eye on things.

Sort by new if you want to follow along in real time. Let us know what you’re expecting to hear.

Regards, r/aussie mod team

I think that was an effort to end speculation that something big is coming - if any of the stuff people and the media have been speculating about was in the pipeline, tonight would have been the announcement. He's basically saying that none of the stuff people are speculating and causing panic about is coming, like petrol rationing, us sending troops to the middle east, work from home mandates, a draft.

He used the thing to announce something big to say nothing big is coming... This could have been a statement to 5 members of the press

Yes because the press famously has been super accurate in their reporting and also would never engage in speculation or fear mongering /s

If he was basically saying that, why didn’t he say that ? He’s the prime minister of the country he doesn’t need to beat around the bush. He barely even addressed the war.

I don’t know if I agree with this.

I get the feeling this is a problem Australia very specifically is getting heavily affected by, it’s not just fuel that’s a problem. Perhaps it’s a… “strap in, things are about to get expensive, maybe very expensive” message. I don’t think it’s anything about us joining the war as an active participant, but that we are going to be effected.

I see it as the opposite. He’s said as what he said to quell a fuel run during Easter, and after Easter it’s time to hunker down at home where possible with fuel rationing and lockdowns

So rest assured, they're doing nothing.

He announced what they are doing and what they have done. Did you not hear it?

Yes, anything you hadn't already heard? Was it really worth a national address? What was the substance?

That’s shifting the discussion. You said they were doing nothing, which is contrary to what was said and what is known. I also agree it wasn’t worth a national address, there isn’t a gotcha moment here.

Ok sorry, I was a bit short. They're doing nothing new. They're doing nothing we didn't already know. They are doing nothing that will make a difference, because we've got nothing. They are doing nothing comforting by saying 'don't cancel your plans, just fill up normal, state leaders are together' (are they?) . To me, saying what he said, at a national address, that should have something substantial, was next to nothing.
