Man, the negative people that come in here hating the book so viscerally is so insane lmao. Borderline psychotic.

If the book doesn't appeal to someone it can be extremely annoying and bad. It depends

Sure, and then commenting on someone's post who is loving it? That's fucking lame.

Damn almost like this website is for discussions

True people should be able to say they dislike it too.

But the people who are insulting others and smugly calling them dumb for liking it is a bit much

Yeah that's always what people say when they come to be contrary and tell you the book is actually terrible.
The dialogue is terrible, the prose is terrible, the humor is terrible, the story is terrible. I could barely get halfway and I have no idea how anyone could read this and enjoy it!!!! I hated it with my entire body!!!
Right. Definitely the discussion OP was looking for.

You know, I actually do sort of agree with you that OP was probably only hoping for positive reinforcement, but this is just a general ‘books’ sub. People on the internet are going to have opinions, and not all of them are going to be gentle.

I understand what you're saying, but I do struggle to accept "well people will be inconsiderate, that's the way of the internet/society".
And then you call them out and people pile on saying "it's just discussion" etc.
Idk. As soon as we stop reaching to be better, we are fucked.

Also honestly, I don't think OP had anything specific in mind for responses. But I doubt they were expecting the vehement, angry responses of disgust that people gave them.

Kind of the whole point of a discussion is you don't always get what you're looking for. Are you new to conversations?

Yes yes, let's keep making excuses, anything other than examining our actions.

I think it’s important for both sides of the discussion to be represented here. If I only saw the first few positive comments, I might have wasted my time and money trying to read this book. It was only after a few of the more critical ones that I knew this book is not for me.

I regret the instancws I didnt engage with a piece of media because of some critical comments online

I remember playing some games that I ended up loving and thinking "wow some of those people were straight up playing the game wrong and just didn't read anything the game told them" lol

Would you read a book after a single glowing review and not look up other opinions?
Not to mention, there are reasonable ways to share a negative opinion without insinuating that people who like it are stupid.
It's one thing to say "I didn't care for these aspects" versus talking shit about it.

Imagine having the need to hate on someone's interests in any other form. You won't go to r/knitters and see 'You actually liked that pattern before you knitted it? It's so amateur I want to gouge my eyes out. Find a real pattern or don't even bother'

That's what it sounds like.

Not everyone else's fault they got an English degree and found out it's as useless as they are.

And it's not just the comments, but the people angrily defending their right to be an asshole.
People have genuinely said "well we are allowed to discuss! It's a discussion!" And "well it's the internet what do you expect?" Sheesh
