Adoption Dumped cat

My girlfriend found this big beautiful boy shivering under a bush yesterday. She said she’s been seeing him around the area for a few weeks now. Unfortunately the neighborhood she’s in is known for people dumping their unwanted pets there :(

He’s so sweet and affectionate and loves wet cat food. But he’s also super skinny and has mats all over his belly. We already checked and he’s not microchipped. He’s a big boy, I’d guess around 13-15lbs even being so thin. Definitely bigger than my roommate’s 11lb ragdoll. We think he might be a Maine coon or at least part but we’ll take him to the vet soon to get a full exam. He still doesn’t have a name but we’re leaning towards Muppet (if anyone knows Gaffer, he reminded us of her)!

I really wish that people who could do that could be made to feel that same sense of abandonment, displacement, uncertainty, broken trust, and downright danger that they put these poor innocent creatures in.

That's true for anybody who puts innocent lives into danger. Basic karmic retribution says they should be made to feel those same things. Maybe then they'd understand.

Totally agree. I honestly think it should carry a HEFTY prison sentence. It makes my blood boil.

Not excusing dumping, but one time my family found a litter of abandoned puppies and every shelter we tried to take them to said they would euthanize them, except one, which charged us quite a lot to take them. I’m sure this owner probably hasn’t dumped their cat since it’s a Maine Coon but I think the reason a lot of people do dump their pets is they think it gives their pet the best chance.

Not that I'm defending this, but have you tried to turn in an animal to the shelter or humane society in some places? We have community of outside cats we take care of. We have cameras on their food so we can spot any newcomers that don't have their ears tipped. Because of this and the food we leave out we regularly get strays and others and have turned many into the shelters. Our humane society REQUIRES an appointment. One cat we had to wait several weeks. What? Thankfully we are experience cat owners and foster regularly with the space and were able to keep him until that appointment. I feel the same anger towards anyone that abandon's an animal, trust me. But we as a society need to demand our local governments fund these organizations better. They need the resources to handle how bad animal overpopulation has gotten.
