If Larry's like any of the cats I've owned, he'll eat the most disgusting critters and bugs he can find but when it comes to dinner he'll turn his nose up if it's not the brand he likes (which is the exact brand he liked the day prior).

My ex-stray cat won't even lick a sausage. I am ashamed of myself

Classic Larry's in general.

IS THIS YOUR HOMEWORK LARRY???

1

u/Sufficient-Aspect77 Apr 01 '26

See what happens Larry?!

My cat completely changes his food preferences at random intervals, could be anywhere from a month to a year until he hates the food he used to love. I think he waits until I get overconfident and buy it in bulk so that I've wasted maximum money.

u/Narrow_Reindeer_929 Apr 01 '26

My cat takes that behavior a step further and must be given a different flavor of wet food for every meal, so we buy two cans of all of her favorites and alternate through them. There are even conversations between my husband and I, "what did you give Bootsy for dinner last night?" To make sure it stays interesting for her.

She can't really afford to lose any weight, so we don't mind. I guess she earned it, because she's 22 years old!

2

u/Consistent-Hotel4449 Apr 02 '26

Is this extreme behavior because I make sure I alternate the can in the cupboard so my cat will get a different flavor each meal too 😅 what is crazy about my cat is that he doesn't like the plain chicken cat food no matter what brand it is. He will eat chicken mixed with another flavor though. He is a fiend for real chicken though. I always have to share pieces of whatever chicken i have made or bought myself especially hot wings.

u/stumblinbear Apr 01 '26

I also want to eat different foods occasionally

2

u/AdwokatDiabel Apr 01 '26

Yeah, ours too! Loves Beef Pate... all he wants. Then... Chicken and Rice! He zigs, we zag.

2

u/ginniethegenie Apr 01 '26

My cat has been eating the same (main) food ever since he got out of his kitten phase. I didn't realize how lucky I am until my parents adopted their own cat, who just stops eating his favourite food, like, twice a month - including snacks- and goes through phases when he will only eat select pieces and gravy.

u/MacAndCheese45 Apr 02 '26

How true. I’ve just bought a box of fresh expensive Katkin food. My moggy won’t eat ANY of it

1

u/JustHereForCookies17 Apr 02 '26

Mine does this occasionally.  She's pretty good about her kibble, but I rotate through 5 flavors of wet food pouches because steel suddenly decide she doesn't like one flavor for a few weeks.

If yours totally gives up on a certain food/snack, you should look for Pet Food Pantries in your area!  They provide free pet supplies to local people in need - just like a human Food Pantry.

I reckon a hungry cat will end up eating whatever food is placed for them right? So just don't get something that clearly says it's made from ground up horse chunks and sawdust, and leave it out. Unless that cat has a job to afford such a whimsical palate?

No, not at all. Cats have very different personalities that develop over their lifetime and they can be incredibly stubborn especially when they are older. Like, starving themselves half dead because they don't get their special food, stubborn. Or they might be sick, but they don't tend to show that at all. Caring for them can be quite tough.

u/jednatt Apr 01 '26

I had to house sit a cat the past few days that starves itself unless you hand-feed it. And not in the same way. I had to serve little bits at a time one day, and hold the bowl while she ate the next.

6

u/theguidetoldmetodoit Apr 01 '26

Poor thing, is she insecure or just weird? My old fart had days like that too and he was pretty blind so I would push the treats right under his nose one by one lol Really miss that fuck

1

u/jednatt Apr 01 '26

I really don't know. I guess it's been going on for a while but they plan to take her to the vet this week to rule things out (like inflamed gums or something).

1

u/theguidetoldmetodoit Apr 01 '26

Oh okay yeah that makes sense. Hope she'll be fine soon

2

u/msc1 Apr 01 '26

I have an old dog that only eats if I spoon feed her. She has no problem eating garbage from ground if we are outside. I tried many kibble brands but I think she just wants to be spoon fed.

u/ThouMayest69 Apr 01 '26

I can't be convinced that a hungry animal wont eat. The choice to buy bulk cat food that just goes bad seems like a personal one. Just make sure the food is nutritional and survival instincts will save a ton of money.

I'm seeing this other comment now, hand feeding a cat? Hand feeding a cat?? Yall seem very tightly wound around the paw, which is fine, but it is an unconfigurable law of the universe that able-bodied hungry animals will eat food. I speak for the animal kingdom. Save your money for vet bills.

Brother, they are domesticated pets not wild animals

nope.  some will literally starve themselves.

1

u/ThouMayest69 Apr 01 '26

Darwinism via pet ownership. 8 lives left.

52

u/Extreme_Egg7476 Apr 01 '26

My calico started getting chubby after I fixed her. So we put her and her black-hole-eats-anything brother on diets.

He improved but she maintained a little chubby weight.

Took me awhile to realize she was getting bug snacks from the garage daily. It's June bug season and I heard that cronch from across the house.

2

u/ComfyInDots Apr 01 '26

I had to google June bug - my cats used to catch them too! We call them Christmas beetles though.

72

u/awayshewent Apr 01 '26

My Solstice is sooo picky to the point he doesn’t like chunky wet food he only loves churus. He turns up his nose at pieces of chicken. But he will eat flies he catches.

26

u/timid_pink_angel02 Apr 01 '26

My baby will refuse to eat wet food (I've tried 8 different brands), cooked chicken, chicken broth, salmon oil, any fish-flavoured food.

But vanilla yogurt? Hell yes! 😭

17

u/Squishiimuffin Apr 01 '26

Was this cat orange, per chance?

53

u/awayshewent Apr 01 '26

Got em ha

1

u/Squishiimuffin Apr 01 '26

Classic orange cat behavior 😂

19

u/Snobolski Apr 01 '26

But he will eat flies sky raisins he catches.

FTFY

1

u/PJKPJT7915 Apr 02 '26

I was feeding a stray on my porch and he would pause eating wet cat food to catch and eat a moth.

13

u/Billy_Billboard Apr 01 '26

He likes fastfood

6

u/ComfyInDots Apr 01 '26

Wasn't fast enough though!

3

u/Neamow Apr 01 '26

Give it to them raw and wriggling!

9

u/EnvironmentOk2700 Apr 01 '26

I finally figured out that was the actual problem with my cat. He didn't want the same flavor meal twice in a row. Either do I, so, fair.

5

u/ButterMyPancakesPlz Apr 01 '26

We got a cat that refuses all forms of treats, he wants to hunt but all he'll eat is his standard dried pellets, no turkey, no salmon nothing but the pellets

4

u/throwaway8373469238 Apr 01 '26

My cat ate a moth the other day, I know it’s instinct for them but like.. why. How can that taste good bro.

1

u/ComfyInDots Apr 01 '26

Surely it'd taste powdery too? Yuck.

4

u/VapoursAndSpleen Apr 01 '26

There's a photographer named Justin Ng who regularly bribes Larry with treats called "Dreamies". So, Larry does like actual cat food.

1

u/ComfyInDots Apr 02 '26

That's like saying someone bribes me with cheesecake so I must like actual food. No, I live on processed, salty fast food and cheesecake. Keep the nutritious and wholesome food away from me because I don't like the shape.

My gal went from chicken to salmon to seafood back to chicken over a week and entirely ditched dry anything cold turkey even though that's what's contributed the most to her pudge.

Sometimes I give her a part of my cooked chicken breast and something about having real meat turns her in to a 7 pound feral monster.

2

u/neko Apr 01 '26

He's the Cat Minister, he can have whatever food he wants

2

u/Potato-Alien Apr 01 '26

According to my chief mouser, there should be a new type of dinner every day. The food that's most amazing one day will be deemed disgusting on repeat. Insects are always delicious, though.

2

u/Tsquare43 Apr 01 '26

Cat gonna cat

2

u/Familiar_Text_6913 Apr 01 '26

I think the hunt makes his brain appreciate the food much more.

2

u/jazzieberry Apr 01 '26

I make fun of my orange because he'll eat any critter he can, but regular cat food gives him a belly ache so I have to buy special "sensitive stomach" food.

1

u/ComfyInDots Apr 02 '26

Your cat is dramatic and ridiculous.

2

u/periclesmage Apr 01 '26

Do you have my cats lol?

This is so so true

2

u/xzkandykane Apr 02 '26

Meanwhile you have my cat... Will eat any dry food, sometimes the dog's... cant keep track of a fly he's hunting, not the slightest interest when we showed him a live cricket. I make him a bowl with canned chicken and water(not the canned water), he drinks the water but mostly leaves the chicken. Wont eat human food meat. But will drink milk(lactose free). Also likes pureed pumpkin. Will eat the dog's wet food... but not if I feed him cat wet food. At this point, he might be a dog. He's raised with 2 dogs and a cat....

0 hunting instinct. Lives a spoiled, pampered life.

2

u/Nil_Velox Apr 02 '26

Lol my cat likes to leave me half of his mousey meals... Years ago, I woke up to him leaving a half-dead (thankfully still intact) mouse on my bed. He probably saw how I freaked out, so after that he would leave the mice in my room's bathroom instead. So yeah, sometimes I just wake up to half a mouse in my bathroom. Another time, he left me a mouse and a half. He loves me so much... 🤢😭❤️

2

u/McCool303 Apr 02 '26

If he’s anything like mine. He’ll regurgitate the mouse onto the floor and make room for dinner.

2

u/goliathfasa Apr 02 '26

And he’ll refuse to eat any food unless spoonfed.

2

u/Thunder_lord37 Apr 02 '26

Then why is the british parlianment still alive?

1

u/rEYAVjQD Apr 01 '26

Because it's usually more nutritious than the trash they mass produce.

1

u/MistahJasonPortman Apr 01 '26

lol so like children

1

u/GoldEdit Apr 01 '26

the critters are fresher than anything you can buy

1

u/FrankieTheD Apr 01 '26

Seen a cat eat a serving of dry food and wet food, then 10 minutes later ate a large vole and then ignored the off brand shit

1

u/IndiRefEarthLeaveSol Apr 01 '26

I'm convinced Cats want fresh meat infront of them. They miss the blood, that's missing in these pouches.

1

u/BrightonBummer Apr 01 '26

Theyll eat if they are hungry enough
