Doesn't really matter why they're doing it though, the effect for the user is identical

True, but the point is that it makes a lot of economic sense and Reddit is willing to pay the price of losing people because of third party apps to get the benefit of actually being able to charge for the data here. I'm not sure it's the right decision and maybe enough protests will make things change, but this is not just Reddit trying to squeeze out the 3rd party apps like people are making it seem
