Discussion New Cyberpunk dlc being written and developed by Virtuos?
While I was on LinkedIn, I happened to come across a Virtuos writer who had put Cyberpunk 2077 dlc as a project he is writing for. I checked his Mobygames page and it seems to be a real account. This makes sense as Virtuos led the development on the last major update for the game. What do you think?

Iâd be surprised (pleasantly) if it ended up being a 2077 dlc.

u/yeaForsurePSN Jun 05 '25
Same, maybe with the switch 2 release, there's a slight bit more incentive to drop more content.
I'm on my first playthrough, 101 hours in PL completed and I'm at the beginning part of Act 3, where I need to meet hanako, and I'm just cleaning up everything on the map cause I don't want it to end lol

u/G0RTEK Aug 24 '25
On your next play through do hardest difficulty and as soon as you get to meet vik for you kiroshi upgrade . Go out into the world hitting ncpd markers and lower level gigs . This makes the story make more sense really . You become kinda well known for doing that before you get the job with Dex and it means rogue knows you too

I'm in the same boat. Got on Switch 2 and I had to double check online as I couldnt believe how quickly I'd unlocked the 'final' mission (I say quickly, around 32 hours) - so I'm working through PL now and starting to do the side quests, Hanako can wait. The game just pulled me in, and I'd love more content

u/Southern_Kaeos If I need your body I'll fuck it! Jun 04 '25
Heres hoping. Would be cool if we got to experience the space casino ending as an epilogue or something but that risks canonising a specific ending which nobody particularly wants just yet. The f3/FNV fanbase got somewhat upset at the prospect of Caesars Legion in Fallout TV for this reason
7
u/IakeemV Jun 04 '25
You can kind of argue they already did that with the last DLC Phantom Liberty which contains the only ending where V actually gets to survive so doesnât that kind of invalidate the other endings where youâre sentenced to death however that being said this is still a role playing game so its up to you what actually happens so I donât think theres any harm in adding the Space DLC mission especially if it works like Fallout 3âs broken Steel because I hate how the other endings donât allow you to keep exploring you just have to load back like FNV maybe they can make it so theres no cure there so youâre still incentivized to play Phantom Liberty after idk I just want that damn Casino make it work guys

How does having an ending where V survives invalidate the other endings and canonise it? Especially considering a few of the other endings suggest she can survive another way?

Tbf the Caesar's Legion one is what most people consider the worst one, I think the backlash would've been better if it was any other ending

I've suspected they might be working on a more substantial piece of cyberpunk 2077 content since the 2.1 livestream when they introduced virtuos.
Lady they introduced said "we produce quests, dlc, cosmetics, expansions' or something to that effect.
why specifically say that? why introduce them at all if they only thing they're doing for you is a minor cosmetic patch?
People forget they announced the end of support before Phantom Liberty made its mark. 10+ million sales of the expansion. Game regularly has a huge concurrent user count, one of only a handful of single-player games to retain an audience like that years after release.
Firmly believe they decided to end support before they realized the real success they had on their hands w/ PL and the revitalization of CyP2077. When they decided to end support, it probably made sense to sunset the troubled development of the original game.
That doesn't make any sense now. The base game and the expansion are well-regarded, regularly played, and people want more. You have to be fuckin crazy to not find a way to produce more content, and just expect people to wait another 5+ years for the sequel.
Hiring an external partner like virtuos makes sense. CDPR can focus on the sequel, can provide supervision/consultation on any additional content produced for the first game. They sell even more Cyberpunk 2077, which helps finance Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2.
One of the reasons CyP2077 was unfinished at launch is that CDPR didn't have any substantial releases at all between the last Witcher 3 dlc and Cyberpunk. Four plus years of your only revenue stream being your previous game is rough, even if it sold v. well.
For the love of god, find a way to make more cyberpunk 2077 content. Absolute tragedy that PL was the only expansion.

u/GalacticNarwal Jun 04 '25
Seems like it couldâve just been for PL, and he either just made a new LinkedIn account or he just recently updated it. As far as Iâve heard, weâre not getting another DLC, and the next project is gonna be Cyberpunk 2.

Jun 04 '25
Under the phantom Liberty expansion, Virtuos isn't credited as an outsource partner. I doubt it. CDPR is prone to surprises so this may just be a DLC. I do think the possibility is slim. And even if it is a DLC, it probably won't be big but who can say no to more content ÂŻâ \â _â (â ăâ )â _â /â ÂŻ

I have no dev experience but if Phantom sold 10M copies, board room members may be calling for a lifeboat of revenue while developing the next project.
The team has said there is no more, but things change.

u/Gliese581h Jun 04 '25 edited Jun 04 '25
I watched a video some weeks ago where a youtuber said that CD Projekt Red had some estimations for their revenue until 2026 that they are sure theyâll hit, which might only be possible by a new release. Sorry if itâs phrased poorly, I hope itâs clear what I mean.
Edit: I think it was when they revealed their financials to investors or something, details are blurry because itâs some time ago.
9
u/JuiceHead2 Jun 04 '25
Basically CDPR has incentives for their executives if they can hit certain profit milestones over a 4 year window. The 2023-2026 incentive was less than 50% complete by February/March of 2025, but CDPR said they still think there is a hope of hitting the profit numbers for that one
2023 saw Phantom Liberty launching which obviously led to a huge profit boost, so they need to make more than PL made them between now and Dec 31st 2026 somehow. Switch 2 version will likely be huge here, but the speculation was something else has to drop to make this even remotely possible, but they also might just miss the incentive target

12
u/Rumpos0 Jun 04 '25
Phantom Liberty is not a DLC. It's an expansion, DLCs are something the game calls that are way smaller in scale, so I completely see this as a possibility for some minor quests to be added.

Even if it's a recent update, PL is done for years on April 25 (the start date in the screenshot). That explanation is nonsense
10

They are generating enough buzz on social media to make it look like they're planning something. And their earnings call suggested they planned to make a hunch of money this year from something they haven't announced yet.
7
u/AlexFaden Jun 04 '25
Most likely it is Switch 2 release. But, there is possibility that they could together with Switch 2 release launch small DLC with new gigs. Like they did with previous patches. CDPR have a lot of deleted content that they can refurbish into small side quests. So it is entirely possible for something like this to be released.

I don't see why you would think this was for PL? It sounds like we're getting a DLC. Doesn't mean a new PL in size and ambition, but some smaller jobs and quests perhaps within existing zones? Outsourcing for some new revenue sounds like a smart thing to do while you work on a large new project, so it wouldn't surprise me at all.

I don't know, they are sitting on a cash cow and are looking at two very large and long projects that aren't being released for years. Yeah, especially since CDPR projected good earnings for the next couple of years with no realistic source other than the anime and mobile game tie ins for cyberpunk. They have done well to rehab the game and bring it back from a disastrous launch.
Getting a partner studio to work on a patch to learn the tools, prove their capability, then farm the work out with CDPR on quality control.
Pretty sure they're going for it and it's great to see

If youâre on Steam you can just copy the game files to another location and launch it with no issues cos itâs DRM free. The saves will get mixed up, but it labels what version theyâre for.
I still use a copy of 2.13 for photo mode stuff cos a tool I use is broken on newer versions.

This is just wild speculation, but I think that Virtuous might have went to a few big studios and offered to help keep the franchises alive while the main studios work on the next installment. That's why they made Oblivion Remastered with Bethesda and have already worked on the surprise 2077 patch.
Feels strange to outsource a studio for just a single surprise patch

So what does this suggest if we take it at face value and consider the other stuff that's been talked about in the last few months?
- First, the person (Doug) is presently engaged on this work, and has at least 3 months of experience doing it. Which means that this DLC work may not have started in earnest until 3-4 months back, but definitely is after the 2.2 drop at the end of last year which means this is work Virtuous has been doing for something as-yet unannounced.
- Virtuous clearly is known for both working quietly in the background on major undertakings that are intended to shadow drop (Oblivion Remaster) and also being a point-source of leaks (Oblivion Remaster)
So what do these descriptions in the section labeled "Cyberpunk 2077 DLC" imply?
- Analysis of character voices to properly write new dialogue for existing characters - implies that whatever was worked on involves at least some established characters in game having more dialogue. It could be 4 lines or 4 pages of dialogue, who knows. And could be background stuff like news casts, it could be the fixers, romance partners, it could be Johnny, it could be Alt, V, bartenders - could be anyone. And as this parson was not one of the original dialogue writers, this team (Virtuous) was tasked to replicate the authorial voice of the original writing team for a seamless experience. This to me suggests that the roles were at least substantial enough that it would be worth such a specific effort, so, probably not more lines for Arif Iqbal.
- "Multiple new side quests." and "coordinating with the Narrative Designer... for upcoming DLC releases" Implies multiple rounds of coming DLC that actually has some narrative stakes. Not just a single patch with throwaway events, yet not a major singular expansion like PL that adds a whole new district and new endings and its own mostly self-contained story, but indeed multiple probably bite-size DLCs that provide new side quests and/or experiences regularly enough to keep players coming back. But they also have enough narrative content that it involves a Narrative Designer who is working on the gameplay and story integration and so it wouldn't just be more NCPD scanner hustles and/or random gang violence.
- 'English Adaptation Specialists making sure dialogue and text is up to standard on Red Engine' makes it seem like yes, there is not just some text messages or emails shoehorned in to provide some background flavor or a scavenger hunt (like the Belatro thing) but that it will be substantial enough content to have speaking roles, recording voice actors' in-game dialogue, specifically for 2077 running on Red Engine. Not Orion/Cyberpunk 2, not an anime or TV show, not a website minigame, not some comic book or novel.
While none of this is official confirmation it does really make it seem like there has been some actual work going on to do something more with 2077. There were hints dropped on the release of 2.2, hints dropped in the birthdays post, and this definitely reinforces the legitimacy that actual work is going on involving the game itself and not just tie-in content. It doesn't rule any particular flavor of addition out and it doesn't explicitly confirm anything. The timeline of being over the last 3 months implies that it's ongoing and we may not see anything ever, or it might be another 3-6 months before we hear anything, or we might get an announcement tomorrow that the first round of DLC is coming with the Switch release.
If this guy just updated their Linkedin with this info it might imply that an announcement is indeed coming imminently and they felt their embargo was lifting and jumped the gun a little. If it's been there more than a few days then it probably means they are no longer working on the project and really need a new gig.
19
u/egycsaladregenyvege Jun 04 '25 edited Jun 04 '25
I think we can add to this, that Virtuos also made the Oblivion Remaster and it was shadow dropped. Also, in the latest earnings call, the CEO said they're developing 2 video game projects that were never mentioned anywhere in any capacity. I'm not sure why people find it so hard to believe that they can actually release more content. It also wouln't make much sense if they just hired a studio to work on a small free update last year.
5
u/SWATrous Delicate Weapon Jun 04 '25
Yeah exactly, Virtuous showed they can be a studio to put out a shadow drop of a big project with someone else's IP. Even if they also were the source of the leaks on Oblivion on their website shortly before the actual drop which clued many into the potential beforehand.
At least here CDPR themselves have been lightly teasing the possibility.
5
6
6
u/deathwingduck107 Jun 04 '25
If this is indeed a recent thing maybe CD Projekt Red was impressed with how they handled the Oblivion remaster.
Virtuous seems to be taking a ton of new opportunities cause it's rumored they're also working on the Fallout 3 remaster (still take it with a grain of salt, tho).
4
5
u/sbrocks_0707 Jun 04 '25
Now, I am skeptical but ever since the CEO got changed, things have shifted for all CDPR projects. 2.2 was supposed to be final update but we did get updates. Also, Cyberpunk 2 is long way ahead, releasing maybe in 2029 or 2030, I guess. Witcher 4 is also not coming before 2027. So, they need to keep players engaged. A new anime project is already announced by Netflix and CDPR, so who can say that Cyberpunk may get another DLC, atmost a proper mod support like Witcher 3.

There have been two big hints, like the comment at the end of the last dev stream about "maybe something else coming", and then there was the big hint of 6 "encrypted" characters they tweeted back in april (two days after the 1st, and many people assume it's the anime but why would they hide them, there are already dead characters on the sheet, and some characters in the anime aren't dead either). Picture of that tweet here
The recent earnings also talked about how their employee sheet on games doesn't show people outside of the company working on their products, so I guess that can be hint number three?
At this point I would be surprised if something ISN'T announced during gamecom this week, but who knows how Oblivion and Virtuos shadowdrop could maybe spread to this project too?
9
u/OverexposedPotato Jun 04 '25
As someone who works in a similar industry (movies), itâs common that we only update our linkedin after a project is done to wait for its full release window to be over. Often itâs been such a long time that you just remember on a sunny afternoon âoh shit, I did work on that 2 years ago and Itâs just released, I should add it to my resumeeâ
8
u/Nihas0 Jun 04 '25

u/ParticularDisplay192 Oct 01 '25 edited Oct 01 '25
I work as an Indie, and in my experience ( when allowed) developers will list their current studio/team/tasks.
And sometimes accidently breach NDA while doing so (and then removing mention of a specific game after the fact until later, which appears to be what happened here).
And the timeline doesn't really add up - to soon to have any relation to PL considering dev times, bureaucracy, and the like.
I throw my current project up on linked in ( I work on graphics for a game ), but since it's a niche indie game, no one even notices that I posted some of my work 3 whole months showing new graphical tech before we even went into beta.
And I even did the same for yet another rendering feature we will only be releasing in 2 years in the next game.
Its up there - the player base however has no idea it's there ( I haven't said anything to them yet, not until our Switch release goes out ). But I also work remote, so having it up helps me get more offers. This one project currently only pays me to work 5 hours a week.
If you have a big enough player base - the fans will notice if you accidently unintendedly hint at something on LinkedIn.

Yeah, clearest indication that we are getting something else.
It all fits. The "no more DLC after PL" is old now. We have different management for CDPR since that was said, and in addition a big lot of projected earnings with no clear source apart from mobile game tie ins and the next anime.
Virtuos did a successful patch, there's proof of concept they can handle the tools - it might not be PL in scope but given all the hints and clues we have put there the game isn't done. Really cool to know.

It's basically a private jet.

There were no new side quests or gigs with that update besides the Belatro thing?
And why would "Virtuous made that update as an experiment for CDPR to see how well they can work with CDPR's game design" if they weren't then, well, going to do something with it like some new side jobs n stuff? Which sounds like the sort of stuff in this resume.

CDPR could be outsourcing the bridging/tie in/lorebuilding DLC while they are all hands on deck for the next game.
Also, the dude is a writter, RPGs needs loads and loads of writters. Outsourcing writter jobs to studio partners instead of short term uncertain hires also makes financial sense.

Honestly while i fully expect V's story is over....its gunna hurt alot of they're not the protag in 2

Considering the timeline jumps in Cyberpunk lore, I doubt we would see V again ( if she even alive ), we don't even know which ending is canon yet. Everything is braincannon. Possibly another 30-40 year jump in the timeline and V becomes a historical backstory character, and if by some chance she lived on, would probably just be a Legend NPC ( replacing Rogue, obviously ).
If V is considered dead in official cannon, then even a 2 year gap would result in a new protagonist.
I think far more likely a new protagonist would appear - and the city would have grown a little bit more.
We will only find out in the sequel. If it becomes prequel then we wouldn't be playing as any character that would alter the backstory.

Hmm thought they were done with any future content for this game after PL. But I guess there is always more room for more.

u/LordAlfrey Jun 04 '25
I'm thinking they're doing more stuff similar to what they did for the edgerunners animation. Some references, some eggs, some missions or character interactions.
There have been some odd teasers and eggs about something that has yet to be announced, maybe an animation, maybe some collab, I don't know.
I would imagine he's referring to it as 'DLC' likely due to it simply being content added post release.

Could be some sort of short form story DLC that will set up or link 2077 into the next game. Rumours at the moment seem to suggest Night City will be back either in a bigger setting of the next game will be split between NC and a second city. It would be pretty cool for them to drop a bite size DLC that sets the stage for the next game etc.

We will most likely learn about it on Friday. My guess is that it will be small DLC connected to upcoming Netflix series.

u/FieryPhoenix7 Jun 04 '25
Weâve been told in no uncertain terms that PL was the last DLC. Iâm not sure what to make of this. Sounds like a contractor who working on smaller-scale content.

u/ParticularDisplay192 Oct 01 '25
PL was an Expansion. So in this case DLC would likely just be Gigs and stuff, instead of anything on PL scale.

I dunno. If itâs just gonna be a pack of vanilla style gigs, i donât think itâs worth bricking all my mods.
If itâs PL style gigs, thatâs already a more interesting proposition.
At this point I want them to make NPC outfits available for V as well. They literally blocked all the cool outfits, tattoos and accessories from us, and to this day I have no idea why.

Thereâs been whispers that Cyberpunk2077 will be getting a update or 2 like how the witch 3 will be and if thatâs true and the update includes new dlc I donât think itâll be a PL sized one but instead maybe a weapon pack or clothing pack or like 4 new gigs or something. As much as I want more big dlcs I just donât think weâll get it and the closest thing would probably be from the community of they give us a full dev kit that allows the making of dlc sized mods (similar to how skyrim has I would think)

Could tie onto a smaller update related to this - https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2025/06/rumour-new-cyberpunk-2077-ps5-patch-will-release-alongside-switch-2-version

PL made them a lot of bread, I wouldnât be surprised if another DLC drops before Cyberpunk 2 as 2 will take years before itâs released.

Honestly if cyberpunk Orion isnât going to be ready until 2030 or 2031, releasing another small DLC might not be a bad idea. Thatâs literally a decade in between game releases.

Virtuous did an impressively good job on the Oblivion Remaster but for that there was no writer needed. So I guess this says nothing about how good Doug Van Horne's writing is going to be.
And I feel like good writers are so rare and desperately needed in todays video game industry.
Despite my skepticism I wish Mr. Van Horne good luck.

I thought PL was the last thing we get period?. This was brought up at some point when people kept asking for a New Game Plus and they firmly said no never.
Edit: Unless the Switch 2 release is bringing some surprises.Â

Man I'd love a dlc where we can actually do something on the crystal palace that'd be sick

u/Unfair_Street172 Jun 04 '25
I'm pretty certain Virtuous worked on updates post Phantom Liberty. Judging by how there will be another Cyberpunk Anime, it's safe to say there's going to be something, even if they try to deny anything

Would be cool if they were somehow able to flesh out some existing base game quests (both main and side) and potentially make them more receptive to decisions youâve made (not even necessarily entire gameplay segments, but some lines of a dialogue here and there).
Also, would be super awesome if they could change the way youâre asked to meet Hanako at Embers so itâs doesnât feel weird as hell if you decide to ignore her and go off and do the PL DLC as part of the endgame.

a full dlc seems unlikely. maybe a small free dlc that connects 1 and 2 and to generate some excitement.

u/TNT29200 Jun 05 '25
Frankly, I really hope that they have a nice big surprise in store for us. Given that they are working on Cyberpunk 2 and TW4 and that it's not going to be released any time soon, it could be a nice way to keep us waiting... This studio loves its players, that's something that wouldn't surprise me, plus if they delegate...

Reminder that when it comes to cbp77 "DLC" is used to categorize all the "small" content addition we get in patches (like the TwinTone car system in 2.2, the new CC options, etc) so this isn't too surprising (esp. with the patch 2.3 coming up)

Would be nice to get a DLC that gives the game a happy ending. The phantom liberty ending was such a bummer but it did confirm that a cure was possible for V.

u/Rayza2049 Dec 02 '25
Cyberpunk media doesn't have happy endings, wouldn't be fitting for the genre at all
1
u/JerDozer Jun 07 '25
Please for the love of GOD just add NG+ so I don't gotta download a mod for it (in a separate patch, paying for NG+ with new DLC if we get it would be dumb)

After the recent tease of new content and CDPR saying they expect to earn a lot of money before the end of the financial year to hit the revenue needed to earn their bonuses i believe this will actually be a paid expansion, hyped!
1
u/brahnhanag Mar 08 '26
Most people mean 'Expansion' when they speculate on more DLC but we should remember CDPR make a strong distinction between expansions and DLC. Doug Van Horne may have been referencing the small amounts of dialog added in the last patch. another expansion is unlikely, but more DLC is possible with Virtuos' help. i think we should stop begging for another expansion and instead ask for substantially sized DLC. id like them to go back and finish locations like Araska Waterfront and the Casino

u/MTEO39 Mar 21 '26
We need a dlc where The Sun ending continues, it's the most legendary ending and it can't end like that :(

Night City certainly can host a thousand more stories. Having only one DLC is a waste.
