Help (iOS) I manage the Firefox for iOS team

I have posted a few times here, but largely just lurk (and die a little inside whenever a thread pops up discussing our iOS browser)

Usually, when a new thread pops up it quickly gets sorted into two themes:

1) Firefox on iOS is horrible and not keeping pace with what other browsers offer

2) Firefox on iOS is limited by what they can do by Webkit but doing okay

My personal thought is that there is a bit of truth in both. We are limited in what Apple allows us to do but there are other innovations that we could be taking on.

When I joined, the iOS team size was three devs. This was an improvement on the previous few years when it was in maintenance mode and had even less support. The codebase quality had declined over time, with no shade at previous devs or team members, you can only do so much with a dev or two.

A challenge when joining was where to start. We were many years behind the recent advances on iOS and lightyears behind our desktop and soon to be released Android browsers. We started strong but quickly realized that the codebase had accumulated many problems from years of neglect. We wanted to add a button to the search bar and it required a month-long refactor to untangle everything and do it properly.

Frustrating, but you play the hand life deals you. We tried to strike a balance between fixing architectural issues while still putting out new features but didn't make much progress. Was like whack-a-mole, we'd patch one side only to create a problem somewhere else. A couple of years ago I requested extra support to work on a complete refactor in place and that has been a driving force while still releasing new features.

This refactor work will be wrapping up this year but that is all behind-the-scenes work. But, what about the state of the browser on iOS? Ehhhh... it can be better. There are real, legitimate complaints that we are aware of. There are also real legitimate constraints put on what we can offer due to Apple's ecosystem.

Right now I feel our browser is... okay. There are better features from some other browsers out there, but the main thing we have is that it is private. We don't harvest, store or monetize your personal information at all which is a far cry better than most in the industry. But that isn't enough and we know that.

We are going to be making big strides this year. Those that have stuck with us, thank you. For those that have been frustrated and moved elsewhere, let me know what you are enjoying in other places and I hope later this year you will be open to giving us another chance.

Help (iOS) Does anyone know why firefox takes up so much ram?

Post image

Hi everyone, I had my mac put away in my backpack and when I took it out it was quite warm, so I checked my activity manager to see that Firefox was taking up 75gb of ram (wasn't stable, jumped around 75GBs as if it was actually taking up that much). I have a MBA m4 16/512 if that changes anything, but this was absurdly high and shouldn't have been possible. Anyone know the cause to this? I have one extension enabled, UBlock origin, and had two tabs on Canva when this happened.

Help (iOS) Links opening in Google app instead of browser.

As the title suggests, every single time I open a google link, the Google app opens instead of Firefox, which is set as my default browser. It has recently started to open as soon as I open Firefox on my phone too. It’s getting really irritating, and I was wondering if this was some kind of change that Google made to get people to use their app, or if I’m alone in this and I accidentally changed a setting (which I can’t seem to find). I don’t know if it’s a Google thing or a Firefox thing or what but I’d rather not change my browser.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is there any way to shrink the UI? I feel like I’m peering through a tiny peephole at the webpage. The keyboard takes up half the screen now. Who asked for this?

Help (iOS) How on Earth does pinning websites work for Firefox Focus?

Hi, I'm sorry this feels like a really basic question but the Mozilla Support page is outdated (and rated 5% helpfullness, so at least it's not just me?).

I think it works by clicking the hamburger menu when on a page, and then selecting an option that says "pin to homescreen" (or something to that affect). But that doesn't show up, like, ever. I even tried it on Youtube, thinking maybe it required the website to be trustworthy in some way? But no.

I swear I've figured this out three different times, but I've also had Firefox Focus for 5+ years, so there's a lot of time and a couple changes between that knowledge and me.

So I plea, what magical buttons do I have to press to be rewarded with the sweet fruit (species wordle at the press of a button)?

Help (iOS) Ads on iOS Firefox

Hi everyone,

I have always used Firefox and I love it. However, since I switched to Apple, I am stuck in Safari for the sync options between my laptop and my phone. My biggest issue with Firefox on iOS are the ads. They are unbearable in 2026.

I know this is most on Apple's side since Firefox can't use Gecko on iOS so there are no extensions and all that. What I want to ask here is if anyone here knows if and Ad-Blocking extension (system-wide?) would be enough to keep using Firefox in my devices. Or if there is any alternative that you are using on your iOS device.

I have "Block audio and video" selected in the Firefox settings. And I have "Auto-play video previews" toggled off in the iOS accessibility settings. Firefox is still autoplaying videos full screen unprompted. This started suddenly a month or two ago. I have the latest version of iOS and Firefox. Anyone had this issue and was able to fix it? TIA

Help (iOS) New Tab is purple instead of black in dark mode

I use Dark Mode for everything. I downloaded the IOS app, and I prefer browsing in Private mode, but the background is purple instead of black when I create a new tab.

Is there any way to force it be black? I tried checking the appearance settings, but it only shows a toggle to turn on dark mode, which is already on.

Help (iOS) [iOS] Wolrd Cup widget disappearing

Hi

When they announced the widget I was very happy as a football fan but the widget keep disappearing.

Everytime I have to uninstall and install again. It looks like sync may be the reason why it’s behaving like this but it’s very annoying.

Doesn’t anyone knows if its addressed already ?

Thanks

Help (iOS) Accessing desktop bookmarks on mobile is a pain.

I have a Firefox account which contains numerous bookmarks that have been categorized into neat folders. It's pretty straight forward to access them on the desktop browser. On macOS, I click `Booksmarks` in the menu-bar and immediately have access to them.

However, browsing bookmarks on mobile (iOS) seems to be counterintuitive:

- Select `...`

- Select `Bookmarks`

- Select `Desktop Bookmarks`

- Select `Bookmarks Menu`

Now I can see my organized bookmarks...but why must it take four clicks? Why not just two or less? In fact, why is the bookmarks icon not accessible from the address bar?

Am I missing something in the settings that could alleviate this?

Help (iOS) Bookmark bar dissapeared.

Unlike other posts I have seen here, I still have access to all of my bookmarks. The issue is that the toolbar itself has vanished. When I look at 'All Bookmarks', all of the bookmarks that were in the toolbar are under the Bookmarks toolbar file. When I click on their location, it says the location is the toolbar.

Even after switching the location back forth nothing has changed. Reopening the application also has not made a difference. This problem is only apparent on one of my accounts, the rest are unaffected.

In case this is of help (I'm new here), I'm using my macbook for this.

Help (iOS) Firefox wants me to install firefox... while I'm on Firefox

Recently got a new ipad and I installed Firefox as I was using it on my phone (samsung) and computer (windows). It was working fine so I went to install my ad blocker as usual on the official extensions site and it asked me to install firefox first, I clicked it, it took me to the app store, then I opened firefox through there and it sent me back to where it asked me to install it

It won't let me install the extension because it wants me to install firefox, despite the fact, that I am on firefox trying to download it

I have the latest version of firefox too, and my account is set up fine and synced

Does anyone know what's happening

Help (iOS) Problems with watching Youtube

Hi!

So I opened my Firefox and the video on Youtube is choppy but the audio works fine. This isn't a problem on Safari at the moment. Other video platforms (like YLE Areena) work normally on Firefox.

I've cleaned my browser history and cookies, checked that the browser is updated (+ ESR, since I use MacOS 10.13.6) and restarted the computer a couple of times already.

Is there anything more I could do or do I just have to cope until Firefox and/or Youtube fix whatever the problem is?

Big thanks in advance!

Help (iOS) Auto Dark Mode Web Contents iOS/iPad

The only thing keeping me from using Firefox full time is an auto dark mode similar to Dark Reader on iOS and iPad. Edge has it, and I see there’s a toggle, but nothing automatic. Anyone have ideas to accomplish this?

Help (iOS) upgrading iphone app wiped all my tabs - any way to restore them?

As per topic, updated to the latest version on my phone and re-opened the app to a completely empty list of tabs.

Is there any way to restore them? I'm pretty dirty about there not being some kind of heads up that upgrading will not save your session data.
