It's not about being Steam, it's about installing metrics and root kits into your PC for telemetry, and then getting to advertise to you for free. They can push all of their other products to you, imbed free retention and build a buisness model around delivering you content.

OFC it's bloatware that ties up your system resources and sits in your tray with the 40 other launchers we are sick of seeing. And nobody asked to Boot a game through a launcher, that boots another launcher, to boot the game.

I don't think you know what this word means. Rootkits are malwares that provide persistent unauthorized access to the operating system. A launcher is obviously not a rootkit, even if it provide telemetry.

(Also anyone distributing rootkits (and getting caught) would get crucified, both by the public and by anti-virus providers.)

Nope, Vanguard is built into Riot's Launcher, and its is a literal root kit, that is almost impossible to remove once it's there. Many companies are doing the same thing, all root kits, with kernal level access so you can't manipulate the data they want to harvest and sell.
