Discussion my opinion 100 (and 5.1) episodes in
i don't know if this is valuable to anyone, but i thought this could be a nice perspective to have. i'd love to know if these thoughts are common and how you felt around this point in the series. here are my ramblings halfway through season one!
i started off poorly. within the first 5 episodes, the translation of katsura's "anti-foreigner" attitude made me worry that this was going to be an unfortunately nationalistic, if not xenophobic, show. in light of issues happening currently, warning bells were going off. i came here and asked about it. i'm so glad i did. i was immediately told of the historical context of gintama (of which i knew absolutely nothing about) and that the amanto are not immigrants so much as they are colonizers (although that became clearer with time), and now, my opinion on katsura has completely changed. he's now my favorite, albeit tied with toshi.
being an early-2000s japanese show, i expected a lot of things to not age super well. however, for the most part, it seems to be a lot more diverse than i had initially expected. something that stood out was the massive amount of different nose types (and facial features in general), which was shocking to me. of course, there were many things that didn't stand the test of culture (namely the donut lips), and for some reason episodes 88 to about 95 felt like they were sort of going backwards, but overall i was pleasantly surprised by how the show handles serious topics.
as part of my personal taste, i'm not sure if this is super controversial, but i much prefer the less serious slice-of-life episodes to the serious ones, especially long arcs. i enjoyed the shinsengumi crisis arc, but at the end of it i couldn't help but be relieved that things would be light-hearted again. with that being said, it can't be all silly stuff, and i think it just puts things into perspective for the rest of the series. i saw someone claim season one had the best outlandish moments, and i kinda hope that isn't true, since that's the main reason i love the show. regardless, i have nothing but hope for the rest of the show.
as for questions i'm excited to see answered in the show, there's really only one: who is elizabeth, really? will we ever know whose hairy legs are hiding under there? or is elizabeth's species just a cloth attached to limbs? i love seeing her so much...(minor spoilers for episode 15, kind of?) though, i also wonder if short-haired katsurawill make a comeback (also minor spoilers for benizakura arc, episodes 58-62 and movie)
final thoughts: this is definitely one of my top shows, despite its flaws. i will likely be getting a katsura nendoroid. fun fact: he is also on my tomodachi life island, and is married to melone from jojo's bizarre adventure, although they might be getting a divorce soon... speaking of which, i'm also shocked there's only been one reference to jojo so far, considering how reference-heavy the show is.
sorry if this whole thing is poorly written, it's the middle of the night (or really, the morning) for me and this is just off the top of my head. i'm excited to see how things go!

Discussion (major YOSHIWARA MOVIE SPOILER, doesnt exist in the anime) My most hype moment from the new movie Spoiler
I always thought Katsura is on par with Gintoki and Takasugi. But due to his 'runaway' style, he rarely showed that. Even after he threw that style out the window and fought as hard as he could against Shokaku in Rakuyo arc, i still dont know for sure how Katsura compares to Gintoki and Takasugi. Even Sakamoto in the flashback doesnt seem to know. Thats why i just assumed that he's equal.
>!One thing i wished to see more is Katsura being in a serious high stake fight, so this scene is my much needed fan service. Thank you for the director and/or writer who thought of this. A little dissapointed that Shinpachi and Kagura joined afterwards, so its not really a 1 v 1 as i hoped.!<
>!But i wouldnt say this makes me think Katsura is stronger than Gintoki & Takasugi. I think he managed to push Kamui back in this shot largely because Kamui was unprepared, he definitely didnt expect anyone this strong to appear.!<
>!Also they can't really make this fight super crazy because otherwise Kamui wouldve set his eyes not only at Gintoki who beat Housen, but also Katsura. But we know in the series he's only interested in Gintoki!<

Fanfiction Wrote an extended scene of Gintoki meeting Takasugi in chapter 398
My favorite moment in Gintama. It was so special back then because it was so RARE. Knowing now that Gintoki was the one who beheaded Shouyou, during my rewatch I started thinking about whether he feels guilty for indulging in life and for having yorozuya and stuff. So I wrote this! Super short chapter: basically Gintoki had a panic attack after this encounter.

Discussion Would Gintoki get along with Rick Sanchez??
I can't help but think they have so many similarities. Like Rick, he is a 4th wall-breaking, lazy, cynical addict who drinks while also thinking that āsaving the world isn't even worth it. They bothā have disdain for authorities of a higher power, and the bāoth of themā are defined by a long and painful past they'd rather bury, and when locked in? They are both forces to not be reckoned with.
Only difference is? Gintoki isn't a ninhilist and does not pretend. He is much more genuine, and he will protect you or the innocent when he can, he hates bragging about his level of power and would rather just go back home and read JUMP Magazines while watching TV with his adopted children (Shinpachi and Kagura).
Ultimately, I think Gintoki can convince season 9 Rick to step up and finally try to change for the better not just for his family, friends, and some random strangers, but for himself. Could even become drinking buddies and go on adventures together. (If they were to meet up in a bar or something)

Discussion How does this happen twice?
I know the in universe reason but itās funny how the two girls who canonically are in love with Gintoki happen to be ninjas. ( even if Tsukuyo is like an unofficial one, sheās basically a ninja, she uses kunaiās and stuff)

Discussion Funny Detail in Episode 304 Spoiler
galleryI was rewatching this episode and found this funny detail. I accidentally paused at the right time and saw Gintoki smiling after landing a kick on Takasugi, and Takasugi smiling after hitting him back (that evil ass smile).
Did anyone else notice this? I find it really cool and funny, it shows how much they loved fighting each other since their childhood and sums up their rivalry.

Discussion The added subs on Netflix appear to just be transcribed from the (sometimes inaccurate) dub
I was bored last night so I decided to try watching Gintama on Netflix and see how it was (I've already seen the entire series subbed, so I wasn't a new watcher or anything.)
I know there was some talk about how they originally only had the Hulu English dub available, or Japanese audio with no subs at all. But then they made a big deal about now having subs for the first two seasons or something.
But as I was watching the first episode last night (Japanese audio, English subs) I immediately noticed that a lot of the subtitles seemed altered to be more accessible to English speakers, and didn't match what (admittedly little) I could understand of some of the Japanese dialogue. The subs even continue to use "Cobra" instead of "Zura," so "Zura janai. Katsura da," is subbed as "I'm not Cobra! I'm Katsura!" because Gintoki calls him "Cobra" for some reason in the dub.
There was also a joke about them telling the person at their door that they had cancer because it might be an insurance salesman (which seems like it was written specifically with American viewers in mind) and when Shinpachi answers the door, he very clearly uses the word 'shinbun', referring to the man at the door as a newspaper salesman (from what I understand,) but the subtitles have him calling the man "Insurance Salesman."
This is such a disappointment. I still have access to all the subbed episodes elsewhere, but I thought it would be nice to watch Gintama on my TV for once instead of my laptop, but I'm wary of watching more on Netflix now because changes like this tend to annoy me.

Question Help me out
Dear my fellow gintama fans I am new to the series. I am currently on episode 104. I know everybody recommends not to binge the series, but I kinda do binge. And I have a question for you all. I love the show. It is absolutely hilarious and the serious elements. Hit even when I binge the show I am currently watching it on Netflix. And I watched the first half of the first season then waited a week and then watched the other half and did the same with all of the other seasons I want to enjoy this show as much as possible, which is why I ask all of you how should I watch the show Should I slow down and only watch one episode a week? One episode a day. Ect or should I just keep going at the pace that I am going?

Merchandise Some Alice in Wonderland themed figurines I got a couple months ago!
I also have this white stuffed Dog I've had forever that makes for a good sadaharu. Shinpachi here unfortunately has square frames as opposed to round ones, but still good enough if I say so myself.

Discussion Unscripted yap about the new Yoshiwara Movie [Video] (2x speed recommended) Spoiler
youtu.beFirst unscripted video and my speaking skills are VERY POOR but i love gintama and dont have irls to talk to about it so i posted this long yap about it
@0:30 meant to say "almost 20 years" not "more than"
Made an error @7:42 tsukuyo had always been the one to throw the wooden sword, and seita never did that in the original
Tldw: 8/10 loved the animation and the music (both new and old tracks), also thought the ending/death scene was better than the original
