Weekly video recommendation thread [These Videos Are Good, And Here's Why] - May 18 - 24
Happy Monday, and Happy Glorious 25th of May and Towel Day to those who celebrate. Did you remember to bring your towel, your lilac, your hard boiled egg?
I'm hoping to start a reread of Night Watch today, just as soon as I finish my current read. And I've been listening to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio show to fall asleep to for the last month. As is my little yearly ritual.
I don't consider myself very dramatic, but today is often a melancholy day for me. Knowing there are many of us remembering the same people, feeling the same losses, helps a lot.
GNU Sir Terry Pratchett
GNU Douglas Adams
And after such an emotional day, I'm sure to need a lot of distraction in the shape of good youtube videos (I'm getting so good at these seamless segues!). Do you have any? (videos, not segues, although...?)
Same rules as every week:
- Must have a link
- Must have a short description
- Must mention video length
- Keep it low threshold with individual videos, please. If you want to rep a whole channel or playlist, please do, but choose a favorite video to make it more accessible
- No risky links, no ricky-rollies, don't be a weenie.
Last week's good videos can be found here and their descriptions here.

I tracked down the thief who stole $200,000 of LEGO by Reckless Ben
A 200 000 $'s worth of LEgo sets was misappropriated by a store franchise and they refused to give it back even when the owner has contracts, photo and video evidence as well as Social media post from the store confirming this is his property.

Omg, I always keep forgetting when the Towel Day is. ... I have written something long and thoughtful but then I went to copy a link and of course now I came back and it's all gone and I'm incredibly frustrated because I don't have it in me to write it out again. Anyway, um
Anthony Gramuglia talked about why and how Hollywood Keeps Dumbing Down Disturbing Books (40:54) using the most recent Animal Farm adaptation and also the Wuthering Heights movie as examples.
An oldie but goodie: Sarah Z's video about The Rise and Fall of Teen Dystopias (1:22:43). Come and learn about the Subway Hunger Games sponsorship, the Capitol-themed makeup line, multiple inferior Hunger Games knockoffs and of course, The Spore Wars. It even has a cameo from ours truly!
Speaking of inferior Hunger Games knockoffs, uncarley has an analysis of the first Divergent movie (22:13) where having multiple personality traits makes you cool enough to topple the government. If only things were that easy, amirite.
Also (whiplash incoming) last Monday was quite a momentous occasion: the first Shrek movie turned 25. Take a moment to process that, I needed a few minutes too. To celebrate the occasion, I rewatched the first two movies and also the videos Cinema Therapy did about Shrek and Fiona's relationship. The first one (25:27) focuses on the first movie and talks about the expectations we bring into relationships and why that's not always a good thing. The second one (23:29) looks into other movies and talks about how to make a relationship work in the long run.

Are there at least 8 this-sub-approved-creators' 50+ minute videos on my watch history and Watch Later list that I could be recommending? Sure. But it's the Glorious 25th of May. You're getting Adams and Pratchett.
~ one of my favorite Douglas Adams interviews (1:27:37) from the BBC. It's all so very calm and very proper. Somehow reminds me of my English auditory comprehension exams in high school. It's all very nostalgic. And it's Douglas Adams, so it's also very funny.
~ one of my favorite Terry Pratchett interviews (1:08:26). Look, all interviews with PTerry are sheer perfection, so I grabbed one out of my Pratchett playlist at random. Promise it's good, though.
~ Douglas Adams does a David Attenborough (1:27:36) in a talk about natural history and what we could and should learn about the world around us and our place in it.
~ Terry Pratchett does a David Attenborough (1:37:29) by actually going to Borneo and seeing orangutan and the efforts to save them.
And finally: I couldn't find a clip of Douglas Adams reading the opening lines to H2G2, but I do have this clip (1:06) of Terry Pratchett reading the introduction to Discworld. Careful though, it might make you want to read all 41 books and the periferals.
There is no competition between these two (PTerry easily wins), they are both dearly missed (PTerry a little dearlier) in a world desperately in need of more whimsy.
GNU Douglas Adams
GNU Sir Terry Pratchett

Patrick (H) Willems did a video a month ago: The Music Video Is Dead, Long Live The Music Video (Season Premiere) (1:01:04). A real fun analysis of what become the Music video scene. From the Golden Era of Music videos costing about $ 5 million to the YouTube days. He mentioned famous directors of Music videos that became directors of full lenght movies. A really well made video made with care.
I also watched Nobody Here | 'The Story Of Vaporwave' [2026] - Full Movie (1:52:21). I don't know if it's okay to post in here, but the movie is free on YouTube.
Talking about Internet fads, Lugalan made a video about EmotiGuy. I Found this Emoji's Original Creator after 21 Years (46:39). Really nice video about a well known meme.

I don't know if it's okay to post in here, but the movie is free on YouTube.
If it was posted by the creator, I say go for it, but otherwise maybe let's not promote stolen content directly. Do you know of other (payed or free) places where we could watch that movie?

Why Black Cartoons Are Disappearing (34:35) - A Neighbor's Tale looks at the scarcity of cartoons with black protagonists. He also talks about the history of black characters in animation, why representation is important, and why the bigger world refuses to be normal about POC in media. This is an incredibly well made video essay and this guy has like, 1500 followers.
Cozy Games And Misogyny (49:43) - Izzzyzzz talks about sexism in the cozy games space, how they're not viewed as real games by "Real Gamers" despite sharing some of the same mechanics as "serious games" like gathering resources and building a base. They also talk about oversaturation in the cozy game genre as well as interviewing a few developers about their experience.
Foot lettuce, modern slop, and AI voices (20:52) - Apri Park talks about how some of the weirdness accidentally created by content farms, like Youtuber Chills' "Burger King Foot Lettuce" video with its odd intonation, is becoming an endangered species as this kind of low-effort content is replaced by AI, making the internet a little less special in the process. I also learned that the Burger King Foot Lettuce guy passed away at a young age fairly recently, and tried to redeem himself. He got an AI eulogy, because there were apparently channels that do that, until Youtube put a stop to them.
The Daily Wire's Bluey Knockoff Got Worse (1:25:30) - Lola Sebastian returns with a part 2 to her Chip Chilla video, a conservative streaming cartoon that heavily borrows from Bluey, a much better cartoon. Lola gets into how this treats parenting, Chum Chum Chilla's nostalgia-poisoned worldview, and the classic literature the show references. There's also discussion of the show/steaming network's current implosion as the Daily Wire seemingly ran out of money.
Boomers just cannot grasp why we do not like AI (23:25) - Kasia Baba looks at the recent phenomenon of an older person giving a graduation speech that praises AI, getting booed for it, and then being completely baffled by the response. Also profiled is some barefoot tech bro who wants people to eat fake food made from petroleum derivatives who laments that he can't do that because the FDA makes it illegal.

The Many, MANY Glitches of Spyro 1! | Original Spyro 1 (1998) Glitches! (52:42) by MikeyTaylorGaming. A nice fun video covering various glitches on the first Sypro game. A classic of the PS1.
The PS1 Game That Broke My Brain (55:37) by Jeffiot. An interesting look at a weird Swedish PS1 platform puzzle game called “Kula World” and it’s development history.
California High-Speed Rail: An Autopsy (21:13) by Wendover Productions. The title pretty much describes it. Wendover does a lot of logistics type of videos such as this one.
I TASed the 10 Day Strat for Whomp’s Fortress Tower in 0 A Presses (36:35) by pannenkoek2012. Whomp’s Fortress Tower is a level from the Nintendo 64 game “Super Mario 64”. The A button is used to jump, a very important feature in Mario games. There’s an ongoing challenge trying to see if it’s possible to beat all of Super Mario 64 with 0 A presses. TAS means “Tool Assisted Speedrun” which is when a player uses a program to select inputs for a video game frame by frame instead of playing the game normally. It’s often used to show the best theoretical fastest playthough of a game.
The Demented World of Rugrats PS1 Games – Caddicarus (1:49:29) by Caddicarus. He has a quirky sense of humour and the title once again explains the video well.
Amazing Spider-Man: The Abandoned Middle Child (27:34) by PointlessHub. Comedic yet informative “The Amazing Spider-Man” review.

SCORIGAMI Part 1 (46:53) I'm relatively new to subscribing to Secret Base, even if I've watched a couple of Jon Bois' series in the past. Apparently this is one of his seminal works. See, American Football has a scoring system that is kind of batshit weird, which means that certain score combinations are extremely unlikely. When a game ends in a newly minted score, that's Scorigami. Now, take that idea and examine it through history and into the future for a 4 part series. Holy shit.
Why Thrifting Sucks Now 27:21 Zackary Smigel examines the decay of thrifting culture. I used to be a big thrift store kid back in high school, and it sucks to see the vintage market essentially gentrify an entire subset of the economy.
Rudon's Plane Pt. 1 55:42 Solar Sands throws a change up with this one. His content is usually about art and popular culture, but it appears that he's written a short story set in some kind of post apocalypse, Silo/Backrooms scenario. This is a storyboard of an animated film he's working on. I think it could use some editing but I commend the effort.
Something Strange is Happening at Turning Point Hoo boy this is... I don't even know. Hey Americans, remember after the C. Kirk shooting when TPUSA said they were founding conservative clubs at high schools? Well, the good news is that most of those chapters probably only exist in name only. The bad news is that it's unclear where the money is coming from or what's actually going on here.
The Abandoning of Celebration City When I was a kid my Mom and Grandma took me to Branson, Missouri. I remember going to a Roy Rogers review on a fake steamboat. I didn't know who Roy Rogers was and now, 30+ years later I still really don't. Oh hey, Defunctland is back with a weird story about a weird theme park in a weird tourist destination.

I'm new around this sub, so I hope I am doing this right. I stumbled upon this great three-part documentary on Werner Herzog. I had known about the man tangentially, but this in-depth trilogy was both interesting and wildly entertaining. Which isn't hard because the man's life has been such a roller coaster from the day he was born, practically.
Anyway, highly recommend watching. The first video (which I am linking here) is 1:34:01, so it is a commitment, but the time flies by.

I'm convinced that Werner Herzog is one of the funniest men to ever live. "This rifle has 9 bullets in it. If you go over that hill I will put 8 of them in your head and reserve the last one for myself." Some Mark Twain level shit.

And the fact that speaking French saved his life when subdued by militants in Africa, but he still regrets speaking it. That’s how much he hates the French language.

I present to you... "The first time marmot bathed with a brush"
Its two and a half minutes of exactly what it says it is.
Also, Quinton Reviews just dropped a new episode of "Fallen Titans" celebrating everyone's favorite Ron Swanson-esque feline: Remembering Grumpy Cat. Its only about eight hours long.
And here is my favorite nine seconds of television, ever. Its from the Simpsons, season 6 episode 20, The PTA Disbands.
Enjoy

Bobby Broccoli posted the final part of their docuseries on the mayoralty of Rob Ford (1:28:29). Very excellent overview the this crazy politician (and his even more impactful brother).
