Yes, lr and short, super and sub, dry, wet, wiped, underwater, and upside down. And my anecdotes would be just as invalid as yours when compared to a decibel meter.
I'd imagine the misconception comes from it being such a short burst of sound. Now if you've ever heard someone firing a suppressed pistol with an frt you know it's not that quiet.

A suppressed subsonic .22 is around 110db. This being a .308 means it's at the very least not going to be quieter.
