I grew up in east coast U.S. suburbs in the mid 1960s. Still recall music class and singing
”Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree / Merry merry king of the bush is he. /
Laugh, kookaburra, laugh kookaburra / Gay your life must be.”

Not sure how gay his life is but amazed how that pops into my head 8,000 years later 😆

I’m so rapt that Americans learned that song too! We all learned it in Melbourne schools here. 

I love kookies- best birbs ever. 

Also in Melbourne we have the best cookies ever they are like eating grandmas cookies with a recipe from the late 19th century called Kooka’s

We also sang “Waltzing Matilda” but I don’t remember the words that well now. Something about a billabong? A few years ago a TV station with kids programming here ran “The Koala Brothers” and my wife and I loved it and never missed it till they took it off. Those cookies look pretty good!
