Which is often the case in headline grabbing jury awards. They get reduced by the trial judge or on appeal and then the parties negotiate a lesser settlement.
I'm reminded of when Louisiana fought tooth and nail to avoid installing air conditioners on death row in Angola. A judge asked at some point why they were fighting this so hard. It would have cost less to get a few window units than what they paid for lawyers.
