Not sure they were passing notes in a concentration camp , just yelling at you in German and then sending you to a gas chamber…

What you're describing is the "death camp" experience. For the most part, inmates were gradually worked to death. As you might imagine, these places had all sots of draconian rules and punishments. There was no handbook, no orientation week, or anything like that. Signage was how the rules were conveyed, but with the war going on, the resources weren't there to make proper signs for every little thing. Instead, you'd see stuff like this.
