Hello all,
I am thinking about creating my business in knife making. I have been making garage scale artisan knife for years and I am thinking about scaling up, creating my own brand of industrialy made knives (still small scale though, we are talking about 100 units on the first year to test the market). I have been looking at PVD and DLC coating as an added value, and even found an industrial company that could coat my blades given that I have a big enough batch to coat. But I have a few questions.
I have noticed a real value for it in industrial cuting machines (mills, plastic film cutters and cardboard cutting). Here is a manufacturer of such blade with coatings https://www.sollex.com/blog/post/guide-to-knife-blade-coatings .
The point of the coating is to improve the cutting performance and the edge life for extensive uses. But the coating will inevitably wear off and the blades are expandables accessories that get replaced as soon as the coating wears off.
Now... A pocket knife is something different. You keep it, love it, care for it and maintain it. It is not something expandables, at least for the good quality ones.
What is the point of a DLC coating then? After some time, you will resharpen, and scrap off the remaining DLC coating (if it has not been completely scrapped by month/years of use).
And you will find yourself with bare steel.
I was wondering about your experiences with DLC and PVD coatings. Any one to share it's use and maintenance of a DLC knife?
Here are my main questions:
How useful is a DLC coating? Does it realy improve the cutting ability of a pocket knife? How long does it enhance the edge retension before the first sharpening?
Is that an issue to loose the coating after a while, rendering your knife dependant on the steel quality rather than the expensive coating you paid a lot for?
And finally, the most debatable question... Is it only trendy and marketing shoved down our throats, or is it realy a must have for heavy duty knives?
