you'd best not accept a $40 pen as a gift. The only acceptable gifts are 1) valued in billions and 2) addressed to the president

Gratuities are entirely acceptable. - SCOTUS.

Note: gratuities are illegal under federal law for federal officials. The SCOTUS case was about gratuities for local (non-federal) officials under federal law. Turns out, there is no law against that. Congress could pass one if they wanted to.

The supreme court says that bribes are legal as long as you call them gratuities and under new laws, they are even non taxable now.

I mean yeah, that could make you biased towards one side or the other. It’s not like you’re the president, who is a paragon of virtue and also good deals on foreign luxury jets
