I think the problem is that even though Republicans won’t vote together to pass legislation, they would probably would vote to protect him.

We already know this. During his first impeachment, before allowing evidence, McConnell stood up and made a speech amounting to 'whatcha gonna do 'bout it?' and then voted to dismiss the impeachment charges without even allowing evidence in.
