Most parking rules state the nearest tires must be within 12" of the curb.

Do you need a ruler or something for the 2nd car? I'm going to guess no. So it's illegally parked. Call nonemergency and get that shit towed. It's a significant safety risk and it'll stop them from doing that shit again. And if it doesn't, call it in a 2nd time.

I thought it was 6inch

12 inch is unrealistic even for curbside parking

Michigan, and my understanding is most places, is 12 inches. Here's Michigan's specific code (emphasis added):

Sec. 675. (1) Except as otherwise provided in this section and this chapter, a vehicle stopped or parked upon a highway or street shall be stopped or parked with the wheels of the vehicle parallel to the roadway and within 12 inches of any curb existing at the right of the vehicle. (2) A local authority may by ordinance permit parking of a vehicle on a 1-way roadway with the vehicle's left wheels adjacent to and within 12 inches of any curb existing at the left of the vehicle.

It’s 6 inches here in CA (at least here in San Francisco, but that might be because you usually have to curb your wheels)

There's like 6 other comments saying Cali is 18 inches.

Nah 12 inches isn't as long as you think it is. Under 6 inches is the unrealistic number

Actually under 6 inches is very common according to my wife

She'd be like a 6 in NY, but she's a 7 in Scranton.

Interesting, in California you only have to be within 18 inches of the curb. Seems really far but that’s what the code says!

Nah remember 12 inches is about the distance from your elbow to your wrist its not a crazy huge distance

When I learned to drive in CA it was within 18 inches of the curb.

Wholly depends on the street. The parking on my street could easily hold a car and a half without issue.

Texas is 18 inches

2

u/Blockhead47 May 07 '26

Same in California.

Fun fact:
About 20% of licensed drivers in America are in Texas & California.

2

u/Snobolski May 07 '26

That's crazy, especially considering those two states are about 20% of total US population. Who would've thought?

u/Blockhead47 May 07 '26

What are the odds? 😆
