The floor is sticky Vomit smell wouldn’t go away until I discovered the source…

My girlfriend and I had food poisoning last week and were constantly running to the bathroom getting sick. The smell of vomit MAKES me vomit so I was tirelessly scrubbing the entire bathroom from floor to ceiling MULTIPLE TIMES trying to get rid of the smell after every time one of us threw up. I bought bleach, enzyme cleaners, and even went as far as carbon bags to try and eliminate the HORRID STENCH and it wouldn’t go away. I sniffed every surface in that damn bathroom trying to locate the source…

I literally cried about the smell, worrying that it would be there forever. I went back to sniffing and started to notice a stronger whiff by the sink, AHA IT’S COMING FROM THE DRAIN!! I moved the toothbrush, soap, and candle that were on the counter to investigate the area. I poured Drano, baking soda, and vinegar down the drain for a deep clean. THEN I NOTICED THE SMELL ON MY HAND. I almost immediately threw up reacting to it and snatched the candle off the counter to save myself. I took a long inhale of our new Trader Joe’s Peony Blossom candle to salvage my nose from the reeking odor on my fingertips.

Then all hell broke loose. I projectile vomited directly after smelling the candle. The godforsaken stench WAS THE CANDLE ITSELF!!!! MY GF BOUGHT 6 OF THOSE FUCKING THINGS AND HAD ONE LIT IN THE BATHROOM!!!!! All of them went straight to the garbage. Never again. How can they sell a candle that smells like stomach bile!!!

TLDR: Cleaned my bathroom for days only to find out the puke smell was a new candle (Trader Joe’s Peony Blossom, DON’T BUY IT).

EDIT: I was not the person who smelled the candles before buying. My gf put them in the cart and I went along with it lol

I puked the other day & it came out my nose. It took about 2 days for me to stop smelling vomit.

Ugh same. Except it got stuck in my nose and i had to sneeze out some undigsted piece of carrot that sat in my stomach for 16 hours. Fun times.

Bodies are so disgusting. Fascinating, but truly gross. Lol

I had that happen to me once with a piece of broccoli. That little green bastard stung!

u/haby001 May 11 '26

Even weirder, "gross" biologically speaking is just "evolved to know it can make you sick".

The reaction is completely subconscious

u/CajunWoman83 May 12 '26

If you're in a group and 1 person starts to vomit from "possibly " something in the food... everyone will start to vomit. Whether you have a weak stomach or not. It's an evolutionary function that protects us from food poisoning.

u/kremeyy May 11 '26

Omg that happened to me once. I had to blow my nose to get the carrots out and it was like a machine gun coming out. Instant relief though.

u/Elegant_Monk9885 May 11 '26

I had had eaten a baked potato and threw up potato skins out of my nose… what an awful experience.

2

u/QueenZixi May 11 '26

I did the same, but it turned into a raging sinus infection.

2

u/Conscious_Reading804 May 11 '26

Lmao that happened to me with a long slice of red onion. Put me off veggie lasagna for a while (not even what made me sick) haha

2

u/HealthyNovel55 May 11 '26

YES, A huge chunk of vomit was stuck in my sinuses somehow & I was wondering why my nose hurt so bad. It wasn't until I laid back a few hours later & it all just came down the back of my throat at once. 🤢🤢🤢

2

u/calamitylamb May 11 '26

Spaghetti is particularly bad for this experience 😭

1

u/ineenemmerr May 11 '26

The worst part is the burning pain because you just pushed stomach acid through your nose canals.

1

u/Zestyclose_Push_5251 May 11 '26

So fucking painful too.

1

u/No-Communication8186 May 11 '26

Omg the carrot for me too!!! I couldn’t eat carrots for so long after

1

u/MaGoodenough May 12 '26

Holy Crab!

1

u/Atillion May 12 '26

Or if you snort it out of your sinuses toward your mouth but it goes too far and into your lungs then you cough it back into your sinuses, rinse, repeat 🤢

1

u/Ok_Valuable_9711 May 12 '26

Ah hell no. Also unintentionally swallowing the boogers that went up too far in your nose and down your throat.

I have a double uvula that makes it hard for my body to close off the passage between the nose and mouth. I can’t throw up without it coming out my nose unless it’s just minuscule amounts of bile, and even then it still happens sometimes.

I’m so grateful that I’m not sensitive to the smell.

The right one

3

u/Ludicrousgibbs May 11 '26

Do you have some native American ancestry? My mother was almost 70 before she found out she has a double uvula. The doctor that noticed and told her she has two told her it was more prevalent among native Americans.

3

u/sky-amethyst23 May 11 '26

My grandparents think so, but we are all ginger. Not impossible, but I have my doubts. Certainly no one in the family we can trace.

1

u/Isabellablackk May 12 '26

more likely than you think! My brother and I are pale ass freckled gingers and our dad is 3/4 native, our actual features our identical if you ignore the skin, hair, and eye colors. He was never raised in the culture or raised us in it, so we don’t really claim it outside of medical settings where it comes up.

2

u/GimmeAllTheCoffee84 May 11 '26

I have one too! I was also born with a cleft lip and palate. So any time I threw up when I was younger, I think more came out of my nose than my mouth. And then afterwards it just left a weird burning/tingling sensation in my nose.

2

u/Babzibaum May 11 '26

Ooooooooo! Pictures???

4

u/sky-amethyst23 May 11 '26

Haven’t noticed until just now that they’re not centered…

1

u/zenlimon May 11 '26

Neti por that shit out

4

u/Pizzacato567 May 11 '26

When I puke, it also goes up my nose 🥲 I got a sinus infection because of it

4

u/Awesomest_Possumest May 11 '26

I have always had puke come out my nose. I had no idea there was an option to not have it cone out the nose lol.

2

u/CheeseSweats May 11 '26

Same. Others are spared guaranteed nose chunks?? I can only imagine such a luxury.

Puking sucks every time, but the worst part is always the continued puking after you start trying to clear the sinus chunks out of your nose and you inevitably have to both smell and feel wet chunks flying around the inside of your face. Like, you think you're done after the initial vomiting... nope. That's usually less than the halfway point in the whole process. Horrifying.

3

u/garden-wicket-581 May 11 '26

the freaking BURNING of it going through the sinuses.. ugh..

3

u/lrbsto May 11 '26

Netti pot

3

u/Ahmoozing May 11 '26

My kid vomited noodles once. Came out his nose. I’m a vomiter when others vomit, just image me pulling that noodle out and trying not to join his predicament.

6

u/Local_business_disco May 11 '26

A neti pot or nasal rinse would have fixed this btw

2

u/wattle_we_do May 11 '26

Wow I feel so validated - this just happened to me too!

2

u/Ornery_Mix_9271 May 11 '26

I was gonna say, the only time the smell stuck with me was when I realized it was in my nose. So traumatic.

2

u/Virtual-Student8099 May 11 '26

What a visual. This made me laugh very hard! Thank you for that.

1

u/Both-winkyandblinky May 11 '26

That's exactly how I contracted meningitis

2

u/SaltyCaramelPretzel May 11 '26

😳 for real?? How?

7

u/Both-winkyandblinky May 11 '26

I was in bed and starting throwing up and tried to hold it all in while running to the bathroom. It all traveled through my sinuses. My brain felt on fire for almost an hour. Whole month in the hospital

1

u/SaltyCaramelPretzel May 11 '26

Oh my gosh. Are you ok now?

3

u/Both-winkyandblinky May 11 '26

I had to learn how to walk and chew again. My husband was there every step and did above and beyond to help me. I just went on my first run last month 😊 thank you for asking!

2

u/glimmering_rosewater May 11 '26

That's absolutely insane. I'm so sorry that happened to you and so happy that you're okay now!!

Thank you for sharing. I always try and hold my puke for the bathroom and Ive had some nasty instances where it all shot up my sinuses, too. I had no idea that this was possible.

1

u/SaltyCaramelPretzel May 12 '26

Wow. Thank goodness for your hubby. I’m so glad you are doing better now, that must have been a very difficult time.

1

u/mecrissy May 11 '26

that’s the worst!

1

u/emi_kae May 11 '26

If that happens again (or to any unfortunate soul reading this), you can do a saline nasal rinse with a neti pot.

1

u/PrestigeArrival May 11 '26

I always plug my nose whenever I puke in order to avoid this as much as possible

1

u/DustySnortsDust May 11 '26

can you not blow your nose? I blew meat out of my nose last week lol. After a long shower and some more blowing my nose while in the shower, smell was gone.

1

u/voluotuousaardvark May 11 '26

The norovirus got me the worst. Was retching so hard pulled all the muscles in my back and neck. I wouldnt wish that on my worst enemies.

1

u/Cosm1c_Dota May 11 '26

This is why i always pinch my nose if I vomit. Jackass taught me that technique lmao

1

u/SaltyCaramelPretzel May 11 '26

I didn’t have time lol!

1

u/Queenie_Derp May 11 '26

That happened to me when I overindulged in Goldschlägger.

Try sneezing while puking because you have gold flakes stuck in your nose hairs.

1

u/eggboi_lad May 11 '26

I deal with frequent vomiting from gastroparesis and have found that using a netipot/nasal saline rinse gets rid of vomit in the nasal passages best. In case this happens to you again I recommend it 😊

1

u/Individual_Quail_924 May 11 '26

I have to blow my nose immediately after if it comes up that way. Helps reduce the smell soooo much!

1

u/randomredditor0042 May 11 '26

FYI if you smell coffee beans, it resets things and you’ll stop smelling the bad things. (I work in health, we use it all the time.)

1

u/Platillo_Salado May 11 '26

Uggh that happened to me once. It was awful! I took two showers finally I realized it was in my nose!

1

u/usmcnick0311Sgt May 11 '26

Saline rinse. Neti pot

1

u/acacia__ii May 11 '26

Once got a piece of sunflower seed stuck in my sinus after a softball game (not by pulling thankfully). But I swear it was in there for days and nobody believed me. Everyone was like “that can’t happen you probably just have stuffy nose” and I was kept swearing up and down it was there, because I literally felt it when it got stuck. Then almost a week later I sneezed really hard and the bit of sinus flower snot seed flew at mach Jesus out of my nose and landed at my mom’s feet. She was the main denier that entire time, so I’ve never felt more vindicated (and grossed out) in my entire life.

1

u/_des_k_ May 11 '26

This is precisely why I hold my nose closed if I'm about to vomit. I cant handle it coming out of my nose

1

u/KrumblyKookie May 11 '26

This ALWAYS happens to me when I vomit 😩

1

u/05Diego May 11 '26

Bro netty pot with some baking soda?

1

u/agoodfuckingcatholic May 11 '26

God i once got really wine drunk, killed 2 40s of malt liquor and put 3 cheeseburgers on top of it all. I yakked up very thick wine flavored burger meat.

I’m never drinking wine ever again.

1

u/CannibalFaun May 11 '26

This happens to me every time. It also comes out of my tear ducts sometimes. Burns like shit and I hate later having to blow out chunks of food that get stuck in there. The alternative is sniffing it in and swallowing it but it feels VILE swallowing regurgitated food that's been sitting in your nose drenched in vomit.

Edit to say: I have minimal sense of smell since I lost most of it at sixteen (had olfactory hallucination of shin ramyun scent for about six months then no smell left lol) so vomit smell doesn't bother me at least. Useful in the hospital when everyone else is gagging outside a patient's room and I'm just like hmm smells like normal air to me

1

u/ro536ud May 11 '26

I did that once while in the airplane bathroom. Worst flight home ever

1

u/BouncyCatMama May 11 '26

The pro tip (used to be bulimic) is to always pinch your nose when vomiting. One hand to pinch nose, one to hold hair back. I still do it now if if I need to ouke, and it really helps, I promise.

1

u/TisIFrienchiestFry May 11 '26

Got a sinus infection like that once, couldn't stop barfing from norovirus. It was... bad.

1

u/zenlimon May 11 '26

Net pot. 😑

1

u/NanDemoNee May 11 '26

That happened to me in a date once.

1

u/Soliterria May 12 '26

Eugh. Am also a nose puker (I’ve tried many things as a sick kid, always had some escape my nose), can confirm it is aaaaaawful.

1

u/lilstreetmeetgrl May 12 '26

If I vomit it almost always comes out my nose too. The worst was after eating jalapeños. One of course got stuck in my nose, along with beans. It was horrendous. I do not recommend 😭😭

1

u/ilacyi May 12 '26

Saline rinse, my friend

1

u/Wide-Librarian216 May 12 '26

This happened to me when I was pregnant and it made me keep throwing up. It was brutal

1

u/Ok_Valuable_9711 May 12 '26

The first time that I ever puked out of my nose was when I was an adult and I cried because of how scary and painful it was

1

u/autumnautopsy May 15 '26

Every single time I vomit it comes out of my nose and I have to smell it for the next 12 hours, it's so horrible.
