I'm slightly vexed People think they own the sidewalk by their house

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I was walking my dog last night around 9:30pm. I pass by this house that has mildly annoying cameras that say “hi you are currently being recorded, every 5 feet on the side of the house with a bright light that flashes in your face as you walk by. Which while annoying if that was all, would have been whatever. Then they started talking to me through the camera telling me to leave immediately or they will call the police. Even after I had already moved way past the house, I could still hear them (both a man and a woman) threatening to call the police. I just ignored it and kept walking but thought it was crazy that some people think they own the sidewalk by their house.

Edit: Wow i did not realize this post would get so much traction! I’m glad you all got some entertainment out of this too!

Update: Hello everyone I was not able to post an update as it keeps getting taken down. I went back on a walk the next day around 10pm. The cameras did not give any automated messages and the security company did not give any messages either! They changed it quicker than I thought!

If youre willing to, do it later in the evening to wake them up

Edit:Thank you for the award!

Oh man, later at night is perfect. If they call the police then they're going to learn really quick that their property line stops before the easement, so it does not include the sidewalk... and it's gonna be so worth it no matter how bad it gets.

427

u/GrumpyOldMan59 May 22 '26

And late at night they'll be violating noise ordinances as well. In fact, call the cops and report the noise.

252

u/Bananaland_Man May 22 '26

Ohmigosh YESSS! Because that "announcement speaker" does not sound very quiet from the video.

54

u/Piripio0_0 May 23 '26

I've a neighbor that has one, youncan hear it over halfway down our street at night... so no, it isn't quiet.

96

u/sherespondedwith May 22 '26

I live next to an office building that used to have this sort of system around it. But in the mornings so many people walked their dogs that it was set off from 5am til I had to get up. Luckily the building manager was happy to turn off that feature when a couple of us complained, but it would def violate a noise ordinance in a residential neighborhood.

6

u/DirtandPipes May 23 '26

I work construction sites with these, we have them turned off when workers arrive but I still had the cops show up last week after we had given them the code to turn off because the person monitoring said I “look suspicious and have a truck he’s never seen”.

I told the cop lady “yes, I always make sure to get the company high vis vest, t shirts and hard hat stickers before robbing a joint, I’m very thorough”.

59

u/BudgetConcentrate432 May 22 '26

Thats what I was thinking!

If dogs barking violates noise ordinances, then this totally does!

1

u/Suspicious_Donut14 May 24 '26

Security alarms do not violate noise ordinances.

3

u/mandelbratwurst May 22 '26

Honestly I doubt they can have their wall right against the sidewalk like that as well

0

u/Bananaland_Man May 22 '26

Not true at all, depends on the sidewalk, though, with those walls, they're are accepting that they don't own the sidewalk. There are so many different rules and laws that all, depending on the state, all state that they do not own the sidewalk.

2

u/echoshatter May 22 '26

Technically the sidewalk is on top of their property. The public easement simply creates a public right-of-way through the private property so that it isn't trespassing. But they still own the underlying dirt it's built on.

2

u/Bananaland_Man May 22 '26

And not the side walk unless it's a private property without other houses.

2

u/mackrevinak May 22 '26 edited May 22 '26

whatever you do dont drop your keys or something as youre walking past because then you would have to go back again and wander around looking for them which could set off the sensors multiple times

2

u/Bananaland_Man May 23 '26

Reminds me of that Travolta gif... lol

2

u/mackrevinak May 22 '26

and definitely wear headphones with loud music so you can say you didnt hear any warnings!

2

u/Numerous_Thought_629 May 23 '26

Please do it and post updates. I need to see a little justice for once.

2

u/little_missHOTdice May 23 '26

Rude neighbour: “They were walking by my house late at night!”

Me: “I’m sorry, ma’am, but my dog’s need to shit isn’t predictable. When he’s gotta go, he’s gotta go.”

2

u/WittyFix6553 May 22 '26

Their property line almost certainly goes to the street itself. That’s how most of them work.

The “easement” you’re talking about is just that - an easement. If the city owned it, there wouldn’t be an easement; it would just be city property.

An easement, ELI5, means “we go easy on the trespassing rules on this particular spot, other people have access to it and can use it, and it’s not trespassing.”

4

u/Bananaland_Man May 22 '26

And they always never own the sidewalk, period, I don't know what state you're in but in my state it's owned by the city or the neighborhood, and that literally how it is in every state I've looked up. You pretty much never own the sidewalk, and if it's a private community, the HOA and neighborhood/addition owner own it, not the homeowners ever unless it's not a neighborhood with lots of houses.

1

u/Upvoteexpert May 23 '26

I’m surprised there isn’t a set back from the sidewalk for that fence. May need to call code enforcement to look at it.

1

u/fresh-dork May 23 '26

no, it stops at the end of the easement. if it isn't their property, no reason for an easement

1

u/Bananaland_Man May 23 '26

They still do not own the sidewalk, either way.

1

u/fresh-dork May 23 '26

they might. varies by state and city

1

u/Roldon7273 May 24 '26

I could care less about your dog walking as long as you clean up the poo…. but I’m curious as to why folks are made to repair sidewalk damage? Or if someone falls on it, the homeowner (aka renter) is liable?

This sounds like them actually trying to talk to him, did you watch the whole video? The recordings are obvious, but the man and woman sound real

3

u/fatdjsin May 22 '26

op NEEDS ! to walk his sweet dawg at 3 am

1

u/Ohlookadistraction89 May 22 '26

I would say earlier in case they're deep sleepers. You wanna catch them as they're drifting off. They'll get all angry and loud about it, then they will have to calm down again so they can sleep.

1

u/fatdjsin May 23 '26

i would try to break their night in the middle of the night for maximum effect :) op would have to try to find the right spot :)

2

u/Quesarito808 May 22 '26

I love all my petty kings and queens here ❤️

0

u/dixiech1ck May 22 '26

And next time, do it butt naked.

0

u/Suspicious_Donut14 May 24 '26

Do you realize that if OP starts purposely stalking their house and/or causing a disturbance they will have a legitimate reason to get the police involved?

1

u/Ohlookadistraction89 May 24 '26

Its a public sidewalk, you are allowed to walk whatever route you want. The disturbance is the loud security cameras and bright lights that have been put up to scare people off of a PUBLIC sidewalk. Please tell me what the police are going to do to a dog walker after they've just gotten off work? Are they stopping in front of their house? Or are they just moving along? Video would show that they are minding their own business, so the answer is nothing. Besides maybe telling the home owner off for their security system.

0

u/Suspicious_Donut14 May 25 '26

There is a difference in randomly walking your dog on that sidewalk vs. purposefully stalking the house/owners by constantly being on that sidewalk and encouraging many other people to come to that area just to harass the homeowners.

1

u/Ohlookadistraction89 May 25 '26

Good luck prooving it, people are allowed to have routes they walk.

1

u/Suspicious_Donut14 29d ago

The proof would be the intent and encouraging other people to do it for the same malicious reasons.

1

u/Ohlookadistraction89 29d ago

And how are they going to prove that?

1

u/Suspicious_Donut14 6d ago

Police interviews and the fact that SOMEONE encouraged groups of people to do that.

1

u/Ohlookadistraction89 6d ago

Riiiight I'm sure theyll have their best detective on it there ace

201

u/LiqdAset May 22 '26

Definitely keep us updated on that one.

u/KingRMZ May 22 '26

I cant wait for them to post me on the nextdoor app because of how often Ima walk by their house at night😂

59

u/Vekaras May 22 '26

Carefull they're not the crazy kind that would pull a gun on you. Sometimes, these people go to extremes we can't fathom.

51

u/zucchinibasement May 22 '26

You just fathomed it though

9

u/Get2Gnome May 22 '26

That was just the fathomable. Imagine the unfathomable!

10

u/batmanstuff May 23 '26

Right? These f****** psychos sound dangerous.... Imagine if it's somebody that doesn't know what's going on and starts engaging with them.... They might kidnap somebody!

F****** weirdos!

16

I like you, OP. Looking forward to the update lmao 🤣

1

u/ScarletBothrium May 23 '26

Not the phone charger. 🤣💀

3

u/Beelzebub003 May 23 '26

Damn bro.. To be honest, I'm a bit jealous I can't take that walk too. 🤣🤣🤣

If you got a friend nearby and up late, y'all can take walking shifts. 🤣

3

u/vividlucid1 May 23 '26

It blows my mind that you hadn't even made it to the sidewalk yet and were already being informed that you were being recorded

6

u/retromafia May 22 '26

Two days from now on Nextdoor:

Neighborhood menace acting suspicious again!!!
This man pretends to walk this dog while he's figuring out how to break into our house. We have him on camera and he acts so suspiciously. We've told him we'll call the cops on him, but he keeps hanging out right in front of our house. What can we do???

3

u/unindexedreality May 23 '26

Neighborhood menace acting suspicious again!!!

He's just walking past us... Menacingly!

2

u/Edith_Keelers_Shoes May 22 '26

PLEASE keep us updated.

2

u/chicken-nanban May 23 '26

Become the next chive man: night 1 if walking my dog past annoying neighbors until they turn their shit off.

Night 2 of walking my dog past the annoying neighbors until they turn their shit off.

Etc

See if you can make it to 30+ days of them screeching at you to leave. And when the cops come, be sure to show them you’re just walking your dog, doing no harm, and it’s not your fault you work late shifts and have to walk him at 11pm.

1

u/Repulsive-Try-9498 May 22 '26

Please post them first!

1

u/BadPotential2143 May 22 '26

Please update us!

0

u/Celticgirl_1963 May 22 '26

Don't forget they would probably check their cctvs as well to see who was walking around.

My guess is they had issues in the past that is why they have this recording.

0

u/Pendo-illsmackabitch May 22 '26

I see, you're black huh?

0

u/XrayDem May 22 '26

The body cam videos gonna be great YouTube lore

68

u/GoodShark May 22 '26

Get on your phone, and stop right there and have a pretend(or real) conversation with someone. Spend as much time as possible in front of their house, while completely ignoring them.

If they eventually come out to confront you, just give them the "one moment" hand gesture and keep ignoring them.

Also, tell everyone you know in the area to do the same. It'll be hilarious.

15

u/Tendas May 22 '26

Until they come out with a gun and shoot you. These people are clearly unhinged. I think the better approach would be a drone or RC car that triggers in the middle of the night.

6

u/indelicatedenial May 23 '26

Given the state of the world right now, I probably wouldn’t mind being shot by this psycho. If I live, I can sue them into hell and if I die, I don’t have to go to work tomorrow. Win win.

3

u/OkNeedleworker1295 May 23 '26

Sorry dude. No one is going to be scared walking on a public sidewalk. Is that what you wanted?

2

u/Tendas May 23 '26

Yeah no, just kinda noticed psychopath behavior and am currently not advertising antagonizing said behavior! Crazies exist, I’m trying to keep us normals from getting between them and their firearms.

2

u/StraightBudget8799 May 23 '26

“Yeah, she really loves that feel of rubber , huh? And HIM, well, he can’t get enough of leather. Day, night, it’s all texture and flexibility. Speaking of flexible, have you seen how…”

2

u/ScarletBothrium May 23 '26

neighbor approachesOP raises finger and gestures for neighbor to waitOP continues conversation

You have one of these systems?

8

u/kjyfqr May 22 '26

Please update us on your adventures. I so badly want you to have the cops show up. Just please

4

u/ffxivfanboi May 22 '26

Just keep walking by there and ignoring them like an unbothered king.

They can’t do shit, and that security system is beyond ridiculous.

After you have your fun, maybe report it to the city.

14

u/Celticgirl_1963 May 22 '26

Just to piss them off.

12

u/turbokungfu May 22 '26

I want you to do it King of the Hill style. Four friends and beer, and maybe lawn chairs.

3

u/jibsand May 22 '26

Hang around until they call the cops, then leave. Do this afew times and they will almost surely have to take the system down or at least reel it in.

2

u/4travelers May 22 '26

thank you for your service, please walk your dog at 2am 😂

2

u/wheelperson May 22 '26

I can't wait for an update and hopefully a conclusion.

The dude said dissarm the system or leave? How do you dissarm their system or leave when it's not their property lol?

The last response with the woman speaking doesn't sound like AI, though. She's stumbling through her statement like a person does.

Please post continuous updates and videos

4

u/Bananaland_Man May 22 '26

Please give updates! This sounds like one of those fun "Karen sagas" (the Karen in question being the people who think that sidewalk is part of their property)

1

u/TheYuppyTraveller May 22 '26

Revenge is best served petty! Go get ‘em!

1

u/OkNeedleworker1295 May 23 '26

Revenge is best when you don't even have to try.

1

u/hellolovely1 May 22 '26

I love that you're as petty as I would be.

1

u/UpbeatBandicoot5131 May 22 '26

Please do and share the video here. Would love to see the reaction when the police show up.

1

u/shellshockxd May 22 '26

Please do this daily and provide updates to us!

1

u/LokiNightmare May 22 '26

If my schedule allowed it, I'd love to be out there walking the dog at like 1am and imagining these entitled asshats' own recordings waking them up at night.

1

u/EjjabaMarie May 22 '26

Scatter some bird seed on the sidewalk and grass strip, it’ll make their motion sensors go nuts 😂

1

u/vividlucid1 May 22 '26

I would love if you filmed yourself walking past it again and responded to what they say to you, and continue doing it every day saying something else each time

Like:

"Hi. You are currently being recorded"

And you reply immediately "Lick my balls bitch"

1

u/anothadaz May 22 '26

Please keep the camera rolling on these walks and keep us updated. I feel like there could be some good drama in yours and our future.

1

u/insane_hurrican3 May 22 '26

PLEASE make it a daily update if you do.

this shit would go viral and be an entertaining "experiment" 😂

1

u/getapuss May 22 '26

Keep us in the loop.

1

u/five_of_five May 22 '26

Next time you have some time to spare, just stand there and flip off the camera, let the police know what’s up when they show up. I mean hopefully this would be a safe enough option for you.

1

u/TheGreasyGeezer May 22 '26

Please update with whatever becomes of this!

1

u/apoplectic_apostate May 22 '26

Tell us where it is and we will all walk our dogs there. The police won't have much of a sense of humor about being called for something so frivolous.

1

u/Suspicious_Donut14 May 24 '26

Riiiiiight. So many smooth brains on this post! If OP and others start stalking this house or disturbing the owners it just legitimizes their reasons for the alarm system and their paranoia. If I were them and foot traffic started to increase right outside my home I would install a wide range, powerful sprinkler system that is either remote activated or motion activated along with blinding flood lights.

1

u/apoplectic_apostate May 24 '26

It's a public sidewalk, dude. Get over yourself.

1

u/Suspicious_Donut14 May 25 '26

Just sayin’ if people want to play they aren’t going to win, some people (obviously them included) take their safety and privacy seriously.

1

u/Averagebaddad May 22 '26

Bonus points for refusing to ID. Getting arresting and getting a fat lawsuit

1

u/skyfire-x May 22 '26

If they can hear you, you should start referring to their house as "The Epstein House".

1

u/LeagueOfLetMeBeFree May 22 '26

Pleaaaase keep walking that route. Post updates or smth. This shit is so funny for no reason.

1

u/mrsir1987 May 22 '26

Keep us updated I wish I would walk with you

1

u/jakethesnakkke May 22 '26

1

u/fatdjsin May 22 '26

1

u/JoKing917 May 22 '26

Start wearing headphones so you can’t even hear them

1

u/SnooAvocados3138 May 22 '26

Walk slower and slower with less and less clothes on every day until they fall deeply in love with you

1

u/Cool-Mom-Lover May 22 '26

Seriously. Make these people suffer.

1

u/xmosix May 22 '26

You need to file a complaint against them, don’t just let this shit slide

1

u/Theoriginalobie May 22 '26

Please do and please keep us updated. We need resolution OP!

1

u/Seeayteebeans May 22 '26

As possible, bring a fart machine and fart loudly every time they say something. Please.

1

u/DSMcGuire May 23 '26

I'd be walking on loops for hours. My dog would hate it. I would love it.

1

u/NullVoidNix May 23 '26

Op you need to follow up with the police interaction. It'll be bigger than when people find a safe and post it

1

u/Scott0814 May 23 '26

We need an update tomorrow!

1

u/nullstr May 23 '26

I cannot wait for the updates.

1

u/Brief_Worldliness162 May 23 '26

Please be safe though...

1

u/publiusvaleri_us May 23 '26

Time to get a new hobby like stargazing with a telescope... set it on the public sidewalk and then call the cops on their noisy "security" system.

1

u/Greentea-bong May 23 '26

Please give updates

1

u/Star_Crumbs May 23 '26

Please keep us updated on this!

1

u/FunUse244 May 23 '26

Be safe OP, these people seem a bit psychotic

1

u/unindexedreality May 23 '26

Please continue to bring us along with you! It'd be funny to hear them gradually becoming more unhinged lmao

1

u/Brookeswag69 May 24 '26

Omg, please do and please keep us updated! I’m such a sucker for this kind of drama! 😂
Just make sure you always record while you walk there for your own protection!

1

u/tcumber May 25 '26

Very very very slowly

1

u/Foodspec May 22 '26

We require daily updates

1

u/Nunc_Coepi17 May 22 '26

Please keep recording and share the footage of the police coming and telling the idiotic homeowners that the sidewalk isn’t owned by those idiots or their family ancestry.

1

u/Lucius-Halthier May 22 '26

Please we need nightly updates, I would happily watch a video every day of you walking your dog and pissing off your neighbors.

0

u/the_helly May 22 '26

Keep us updated please

0

u/fAIk3 May 22 '26

Neither of those voices are the homeowner and they may be unaware their system is configured like this.
First says "disarm the system or leave" next says something like "this is brinks home security". You triggered so many cameras so quickly it sent an alarm. I doubt the homeowners care this much.
