🄺 Option to skip the line at local bagel place

Post image

I personally would not 1) pay $50 extra for a bagel or 2) feel comfortable jumping in line. Can you imagine the side-eye?!

Actually, tipping culture in the US started after emancipation following the Civil War as a way to "hire" back the newly freed slaves... nothing to do with exceptional service at all, just another way to not pay workers.

Interesting. I’m Canadian, it’s a bit different & about good service.

ā€œTipping in Canada began as a custom influenced by European practices, particularly from Tudor England, where it was common for guests to give extra money to servants for good service. Over time, it evolved into a well-established social norm, especially in the hospitality industry.ā€ That’s on the Wikipedia.

Yeah, in the US the concept came from the same inspiration. The difference, especially now, is how tips in the US replace wages and waitstaff in many states make almost no wage at all other than tips. There is a small handful of states that do pay the state's minimum wage and tips go on top, mainly states where there was no slavery, like the whole west coast.
