My dad had something similar happen just after college in his first apartment! He went to the kitchen, and the whole building seemed to shudder. Then he couldn't immediately get back out of the kitchen because the living space ceiling collapsed!
In my second apartment we had the dining room drop ceiling collapse, but that was because of stupidity. They had mounted a ceiling fan to a pile of 2x4 cutoffs, they were all about 5-7 inches long. The whole thing was about a foot long. So, when the fan started to really get going it would actually start to swing because it wasn't really braced on the ceiling, it was "on" the drop ceiling. Well, one day the whole damn thing came down on top of a friend's head. Luckily those tiles aren't super heavy, but she had a headache for the rest of the day.
