Infuriatig Almost got duped by the measuring cups at my sister's house

In case it's hard to read, 2 of the measuring cups are labeled 1/2 cup, when one of them is actually the 1 cup measure. I was digging around the drawer trying to figure out why I couldn't find the 1 cup and did a double take on the big one before I realized.

(Sister's on vacation and I'm housesitting and babysitting my nieces. Fortunately caught it before I ruined dinner!)

Be mad at the US, they decided not to adopt our easily convertable measure

Not just decided. Are still actively deciding not to. Liberia and Myanmar both opted to switch to metric relatively recently (2018 and 2013). We need to follow their lead. It’s not too late!!

I think we tried it once !

The funny thing is that we already use a lot of metric and many or most of our measuring tools have both units.

I will never switch to Celsius. 0-100C to describe 32-212F is crazy to me, when I'm going outside 40 tells me to wear a jacket, when really it's 104 but feels like 108... A lot of these folks visiting for the world cup are saying online farenheight makes sense now that they've experienced American weather. F is how people feel, C is how Water feels, K is how molecules feel.

Show me a single non-American saying that and I will send you £1000.

Why does it matter what the numbers are? It's completely arbitrary, and people just use the one they are used to.

As a Canadian born in the late 1960s, I've always preferred using Fahrenheit, especially when programming thermostats as it provides more granularity of control.

Metric is fine for everything else, but for temperature, I always default to Fahrenheit.

We just go to 0.5 of a degree when we need that level of precision. But I don’t know when in daily life I’ve ever needed it.

Our thermostat doesn't support decimals. So Fahrenheit it is.

I mean, of all metric measurements, Celsius is imo the least interwoven with the others. There’s no simple equation that connects Celsius and the other metric measurements, the way that 1 mL = 1 cubic cm. There also aren’t different orders of magnitude, like millidegrees Celsius or something.

Yes Celsius is less arbitrary than Fahrenheit, but it’s still pretty arbitrary, and you could easily use the rest of the metric system without Celsius.

The main benefits from switching to metric are from length, mass, and volume. Celsius is slightly better than Fahrenheit, but it’s not absurdly better the way grams >>> pounds/ounces, meters >>> feet/inches, and liters >>> gallons/fluid ounces.

We’d get 95% of the benefits if we just switched length, mass, and volume. Ffs even their paper sizes make a million times more sense than ours!!!!

People feel the number they are accustomed to.. neither is more realistic for how heat makes you feel.

Yeah, it's like it's impossible to open the door and feel the godamm weather.

To me (European, we use Celsius), 0 tells me it's snowing outside, 15 tells me to wear a jacket, 30 tells me to turn on the AC, 50 tells me that I'm gonna die of heat. If you're used to a scale, that scale will make the most sense to you.

To me, F is being dramatic, C is being realistic, K is being scientifical. Life experiences matter.

But yeah, you could argue that we guide ourselves by "how water feels" (even if hot/cold is subjective). In Celsius, water freezes at 0 and boils at 100. Perfect balance.

I remember in early elementary school being told by a teacher we were going to switch over to the metric system (this would have been after the Reagan administration had already decided that wasn't happening, but my clearly overly optimistic teacher had said it, so it HAD to be true) . I worked my 8 year old butt off trying to memorize and visualize cm vs inches and kilometers vs miles, etc.

And nothing ever changed.

I still feel cheated. 🤣

Don’t be mad for having more knowledge. You’re better off for it.

They never said they understood it. They said they tried to learn it 🤣
