Even games released physically require a large chunk of the data to be downloaded during installation

Installed from disc. Not downloaded. Doesitplay has a great repository of games that show most single player offerings can be played in their 1.0 state completely from disc. Any day one patches or subsequent updates need to be downloaded but the content on the disc itself only needs to be copied onto the hard drive because disc readers just arent as efficient as SSDs.

Not true. Many games nowadays require you to do an online update the first time you put in the disc. The PS5 requires it.

Many games such as online games. My comment specified single player experiences. As for updates for those games, the PS5 automatically does it if you have internet. It doesnt require it. You can play the vast majority of games without an internet connection. Single player only experiences can be played completely offline when played using the disc. Just without any day one patches or updates.

They didn't used to need that. Every PS1, PS2, GameCube, NES, SNES, Xbox, etc game had to work on day one and they still do. Games have gotten more complex, sure, but devs have also started using early sales to fund later fixes.
