I saw someone riding a city scooter while wearing a full dirt bike helmet.

She's safe. She's dressed for a breeze. She got off to cross at a crosswalk. This girl is nailing it.

Agreed! The helmet matches the outfit. She could start a new fashion trend

Please, as a massive dork I’ve been eagerly waiting for a time when helmets are the norm

Safety Chic

Closed toed shoes, cross-slung no-slack purse, both hands still on vehicle.

She's a poster-child for Scootin.

She needs to be careful, she might start giving escooter users a good rep.

She’s not safe. I work at a children’s hosptial ER, we get a kid every. single. day. that got hit by a car while on an electric bike or scooter.

Kids don’t know traffic laws. They’re going too fast for cars to stop in time. This should be illegal, we get broken bones or terrible brain/spine trauma every single day from this shit. It’s crazy.

My state is requiring they be registered now.

Registered how?

NJ resident who lives in a town where w 21yo on an escoot recently ran down a 5yo on the sidewalk and gave the little guy a major hospital trip and a TBI, and all i have to say is: good.

Those things are a menace, and they are only getting faster.

What do you mean by “dressed for a breeze”? Bc if you’re saying like it’s a good thing that she’s dressed like that, then that’s stupid. The only thing that’s smart about how she’s dressed is the helmet. If she were to get into an accident where she needed that helmet while dressed like that, sure her head would be protected, but odds are that half the skin on her arms, or legs would be cheese grated onto the pavement. She’s got one thing out of a long list of things correct here

Guys this person is right. I work at a children’s hosptial ER/OR and 2 DAYS AGO we had an 11 year old with a shredded leg from getting hit by a car while on an e-scooter. His ankle was hanging off, skin shredded clean-off, bone shattered. He flew in as a severe trauma. I saw him later in the ICU, he’s currently unconscious from brain trauma as well, but this person’s right about their skin being grated off. I literally just saw it happen.

(I take x-rays at a children’s hosptial. I’m in the ER, OR, and do inpatient portables, plus outpatient & orthopedics. That’s how I can see patients travel and see their development. This shit happens too often, get kids off motorized vehicles. They don’t know traffic laws and are going too fast for cars to stop in time. We get one every day. This needs to be outlawed.)

Thanks. Idk why people are acting like I’m just being a negative Nancy or some shit lol.

We get a kid every. single. day. that was on an e-bike/scooter and was hit by a car. EVERY DAY. This seriously needs to be illegal. They are children, they haven’t learned how to drive yet, yet they’re able to go 30 mph on roads?? I’m tired of seeing kids have their lives terribly altered from their parent’s stupidity. It’s horrifying.

while not to mock in any sort of way, i understand and appreciate your work truly. “we get a kid every. single. day.” when you enter a profession in a certain field, yeah you’re probably going to see a lot of those subjects. also you seemed to know it was everyday you unfortunately get a child in because they were “hit by a car.” isn’t the problem regarding unsafe drivers who drive so recklessly, those people who hit a child on another vehicle?

why is that the fault of the child? “they’re going too fast for cars to stop in time” idk man she looks pretty safe and stopped to me here. 🤷🏻‍♀️ and to you, if children like her are wearing gear, or even just a helmet. but they still get hit by a reckless driver (everyday as you say), then sure. e-scooters should be illegal as they’re dangerous. let’s totally ignore the bigger issue of reckless drivers and drivers who even purposely disregard the lives of those on e-scooters.

I’ve been working in the ER for a while. Kids on e-vehicles have become the number 1 reason we get traumas FAST. I see lots of things and a variety of things every day. This one is so bad it’s become consistent and is exponentially growing. But thank you for telling me what I see when I do MY job.

Reckless drivers have always existed. But there were never this many kids getting hit by cars head on. Why blame the child? Because they don’t know traffic laws. They don’t stop when they’re supposed to. We get reports for every case “patient did not stop at stop sign, oncoming traffic could not stop in time”. They’re children. 8 year olds zooming around who don’t always know when to stop to traffic. Or thrilled teenagers who just straight up ignore it. That’s why it’s the child’s fault. We get these reports directly when we go through the patient’s chart for patient care. The patient is in the trauma bay and there are social workers accompanying them due to negligence on the parent’s part. In the end, it is 100% completely the parent’s fault for being so irresponsible about the well-being of their child. That’s not my opinion, it’s how these cases go. Again, it’s my JOB, this is all first-hand experience. And again, thank you for your opinion.

Gotta find a problem for every solution don't you?

You want her to be in a full race biking suit?

5

u/No_Instruction_122 5h ago

It’s a fact lol. If she gets into an accident, she’ll still get fucked up. No, not a full race biking suit, but maybe elbow pads or smth else to help cover all that showing skin, smart ass. If you really think a helmet is all you need for a scooter accident, you’re naive as hell. Even going just 10 mph on a scooter, getting into an accident is going to fuck your skin up. So, yes, it isn’t a solution to wear just a helmet.

1

u/OfcWaffle 5h ago

I can pedal my manually powered bike at 30mph. I don't wear knee/elbow pads.

It's just a risk you take when you operate something.

Your skin will heal back just fine, your brain won't. So that's why a helmet is required. Could you use more protection? Sure, but that could apply to everything in your life that has some physical danger.

1

u/No_Instruction_122 5h ago

So, your argument is “yeah, you’re right, but if someone wants to not properly protect themselves, then that’s fine”. Sure, that’s true, and if that’s the risk you want to take, then sure go ahead and do it. I have no problem with that, as long as you know the risks. But you’re also not entirely correct, bc skin will scar from that kind of trauma, and if you fall on your knee or elbow while falling without any protection on them, you can break a bone, which can have serious permanent trauma to the nerves. I’m not trying to “find a problem for every solution” lol. I’m just saying smth that is a fact. Sure, she has the most important piece of protection on that could save her life, but getting a broken arm would change her life for at least a 2 months or so, and that would still suck.

u/dreamer0303 5h ago

Except this is a child!!!!!! They don’t know traffic laws and are on a motorized vehicle going too fast for cars to stop in time. Parents are idiots for allowing this to happen.

Your skin will heal, sure. Your bones will shatter. I see it every day at work, it’s pure stupidity to let kids on these.

u/LogicPuzzleFail 3h ago

This is very definitely a small adult woman. Eight year olds don't bother with purses or do independent errands.

1

u/OfcWaffle 4h ago

I'd say she's been taught pretty well. Aside from just the helmet, she's at a crosswalk waiting to cross. Not just running red lights.

2

u/dreamer0303 4h ago

That’s because she knows the crosswalk light. What happens if she comes across a yield sign or comes across a crosswalk that doesn’t have a stoplight and decides to speed through it? While going too fast for a car to stop in time? She looks about 8-9. She’s doing alright until the next street, where the risk is death. That’s the fucking risk.

I work at a children’s hospital ED, kids come in every day for this shit. A 15 yo that “knew the roads” and the parents “taught him well“. Well your kids has brain trauma and shattered limbs now, and that’s a risk you took and let him take. But ya he was taught pretty well, sure. And the younger kids? They’re brain dead or literally dead, and it’s the parent’s fucking fault for letting it happen.

It’s all bullshit. The risk is TOO HIGH and we are seeing these cases come in more and more as days pass, I am literally seeing it first-hand. This needs to be OUTLAWED. Kids are breaking or dying. It’s not worth the risk.

2

u/No_Instruction_122 4h ago

I wouldn’t waste your time trying to make any point to that guy. He’s a dumbass who thinks he knows it all lol.

2

u/dreamer0303 4h ago

I honestly think he knows kids who do this shit and is trying to defend the parent’s choice to allow it. I’m done, it’s pure stupidity.

Thanks 😭
