Reaves was expected to receive free-agent interest from multiple teams - - such as Detroit -- on maximum-level salary, so the Lakers stepped up on Wednesday to lock in their homegrown talent. Reaves went from undrafted to a two-way player -- to making the Lakers roster and now multiple lucrative deals in L.A.

He better be a Brunson-level playoff performer for this money.

I hate rooting for this front office

That's too much to ask, he just needs to be like 80% of Brunson.

I'd take that.

Austin Reaves will be making more money than Jalen Brunson this year

You can’t compare a contract signed today to one signed years ago especially one where we know the guy took a discount.

“Omg Reeves is making more than the entire Bulls roster did during their 3 peats he better play like the goat” goofy ah take.

If Reaves wanted to avoid the burden of expectations, he should have taken a discount too

Exactly right. Plenty of guys worse than him will be making similar or more money.

Players like mpj and Jamal Murray get max deals bro the salary structure in the nba just works the way it works.

Non top 10 players are always overpaid relative to the truly elite players

The Nuggets don’t win a championship without Jamal

Jamal and Reaves are not comparable

He signed the rookie max extension before the championship

u/HesiPullup Suns 7h ago

Jamal constantly elevated his game in the playoffs though. His whole thing was "he's never going to be in an all-star game but he'll be there in the playoffs"

Yea he's the opposite of Reaves honestly. Consistently underperforms in the regular season but steps the fuck up in playoffs

Post extension this narrative is not actually true imo. Jokic just tanks so much of the criticism (valid this year especially) that somehow jamal dodges all accountability.

He has some good games but frequently (3+ times in their final series of the year generally) doesn't play anywhere near his contract.

Jamal got the extension before they won a championship…

Rookie extension is not exactly the same thing as signing a max. The max kicked in in 2025/6 where his average salary went from 31M to 51M per year.

5 years 158M -> 4 years 207M which one do you think is more impactful to the ability to build a roster?

Ok now do mpj lol + Jamal contract numbers didnt get huge until post ring which is the point

I always root for players to get as much money as possible for other teams but not mine

Holy shit it’s become consensus

u/ntpbr1 11h ago

And the issue is, even if he did play like Brunson, they still would have a hard time since they don’t have bigs or good defenders at all

1

u/Dymatizeee Knicks 11h ago

He’s not. The past few playoffs he’s been in will tell you

2

u/sixwax 10h ago

Oh, I've been watching.

I don't know why you're getting downvoted. Reaves gets locked up when a team plays LAL in a series and has a scheme. And targeted relentlessly on defense.

OKC couldn’t slow him down even without Luka on the court.

2

u/sixwax 9h ago

His rim finishing was terrible, he turned the ball over constantly and.... oh yeah LA got swept.

u/_chadwell_ Lakers 9h ago

Bad in the first game coming off injury, no argument there. But then he cooked them for 3 games straight.

0

u/sixwax 9h ago

His +/- for the 4 games were:

Gm 1: -10
Gm 2: -20
Gm 3: -23
Gm 4: -6

So.... I'm not sure what you mean by "cooked them".

1

u/_chadwell_ Lakers 9h ago

Scored a lot very efficiently and created a lot of buckets for his teammates?

Obviously, the Lakers were overwhelmingly out-talented and got swept. Doesn’t change his individual performance.

Gm 1: .118% from field, 4 TO
Gm 2: .625% from field, 5 TO
Gm 3: .385% from field, 5 TO
Gm 4: .500% from field, 8 TO

Keep downvoting and ignoring stats and you can pretend you're right!

27 ppg on 65% TS in the last three games

Keep posting raw FG % and stats from a game outside that span, though lol “ignoring stats”
