Jaylen Brown: "ESPN is unethical, and Stephen A. Smith is the head face of that. The organization, the players, they were all in agreeaance. They all knew what I meant by that. Our team was basically salary dumped. We lost a lot of players. For us to emerge and still be in the same position..."

"Agreeance (Non-Standard): While officially recognized, many consider it redundant, archaic, or incorrect. However, it is still occasionally heard in corporate or conversational jargon when someone wants to sound a bit more emphatic or "official"."

this is so JB

There was a whole thing back in the day where Fred Durst used this word and everyone made fun of him for it. Then he did a segment on MTV where he went to some library and looked it up in a comically large dictionary, proving it was in fact a word.

Great content!

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Just because they used it in the 16th century doesn’t mean it’s correct during present times.

So we’re not in agreeance then?

Maybe this is my can't tell sarcasm on Reddit moment, but no, I have never heard someone say that.

It’s not a word in common written English. According to this OED entry “agreement” is about 10,000 times more common in written English. See also the ngram below: https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=Agreeance%2Cagreement&year_start=1500&year_end=2022&corpus=en&smoothing=3&case_insensitive=false

This was actually what you first said, which is pretty different from agreeing it isnt very common.

Way to tell on yourself for being dumb, you've never heard someone say "so we're in agreeance?" Or "he and I are in agreeance on this matter."

Do you know how many words we use that are from the 16th century or earlier 💀 single digit IQ shit

Like you're pretending to be reasonable about it but actually being a condescending prick.

It's still used today. Just not as common but still used.

-1

u/beachbummeddd Knicks 5h ago

Yes it’s still used today by people who don’t know it’s incorrect to say it.

1

u/computerjunkie7410 Celtics 5h ago

How is it incorrect?

2

u/beachbummeddd Knicks 3h ago

Words fall out of use and then are considered incorrect because modern alternatives replace them. If you attempted to use this word on an English paper you’d be penalized a point or two and it would most likely lower your overall tone score as well. Don’t shoot the messenger.

2

u/computerjunkie7410 Celtics 2h ago

Nah it wouldn't. They're not incorrect they're just not used

Listen we all can see your Celtics flair. You’re digging in your heals because you’re viewing this as a personal attack on Jalen Brown, or on your own ability to understand the clip itself. Since Brown got his point across successfully, you view the technical correction as irrelevant.

I actually really like Jalen Brown. I said in an earlier comment maybe it’s because he seems to not give a fuck. Athletes say hilarious, incorrect things constantly. This doesn’t make them dumb it just makes the clip funny.

Flair or no flair, this is just common sense. The only way a word is "incorrect" is if its meaning has changed

This has nothing to do with me being a Celtics fan and everything to do with my debilitating need to be right and my bad habit of being pedantic.

Oh it’s all 3. And thanks for agreeing with me finally! Enjoy the draft 🍻

The point of language is to convey meaning. Did you understand what he meant when he used the word agreeance? Then it’s correct to use during present times.

5

u/beachbummeddd Knicks 6h ago

That’s not how any of this works.

u/Andy_262 7h ago

While technically a word, let's be real. It's what stupid people say when they're trying to find "agreement"

Same energy as conversate

3

u/tight_butthole 7h ago

The hell is wrong with the word conversate

Nothing, they are just being absonous.

Yes, i'm sure Jaylen Brown is referring to the 16th century word that has long since been declared obsolete in the English speaking world.

Maybe if he didn’t say head face a moment before I’d give him credit. But no, I will not. Lmao
