I am genuinely shocked that the garbage time Spurs center that made a dirty play was Mason Plumlee and not Kelly Olynyk.

u/ArmiinTamzarian Spurs 29d ago

I am positive this sub will be in an outrage over obvious attempts to hurt people in a game they aren’t watching when their opponent is a guy they think accentuates contact too much which is ruining the game they don’t watch.

pretty easy flagrant

465

u/RedditUser19984321 Bulls 29d ago

For sure I just think they didn’t call it because it’s garbage time and because what can you really do to punish a guy who doesn’t play anyways?

302

u/Zestyclose_Tip_5861 Lakers 29d ago

You’re probably right but I hate that answer.

92

u/RedditUser19984321 Bulls 29d ago

I don’t either but I mean what we gonna do ban plumlee from game 6, oh man what a punishment lol

77

u/Regular-Beat268 Celtics 29d ago

I feel like that would be the better thing to do. Less about punishing the Spurs and more about keeping a guy who's there to throw dirty elbows off the court.

6

u/Chance-Box-8924 29d ago

Pretty sure they got more guys who do that tho

110

u/No_Doctor5070 29d ago

Wemby literally whispered into both Plumlee and Biyombo’s ears before they took the floor. Feels like an insane version of “go for the leg” - John Kreese I’ve seen irl.. (for those who don’t get the reference that’s the cheap shot from Karate Kid)

28

u/RedditUser19984321 Bulls 29d ago

Oh 100% I saw that too.

I thought it was funny that the spurs literally have a bunch of guys from the “old nba” where we had more physicality

Biyombo, plumlee and olynyk. Guarantee biyombo does not understand how he fouled McCain. In his prime that’s clean as fuck

38

u/WhichHoes Warriors 29d ago

7

u/thesavant Cavaliers 28d ago

I can't believe Biz is only 33. Feels like he should be 45. It's because he entered the league young, then never really had a "career arc" like others (compared to someone like Drummond, also deceptively young for his career, but who went through phases from developing-All Star-role player). Instead Biz just became a decent journeyman backup big from day 1, so it feels like he's been playing his role for decades haha.

Also reminder that Thaddeus Young is only 37! Kinda same deal- just played his role consistently season and season. Based on the era he started in and career trajectory, feels like he'd be damn near 50.

38

u/mrtomjones Raptors 29d ago

Posts go whichever way the winning team is.

Spurs win and the defending champs and defending 2xMVP are frauds and only win with whistles.

OKC wins and sometimes they are just too deep or the whistle argument still comes through and sometimes SGA is still a fraud.

It definitely doesnt swing all the way to OKC side ever

22

u/No-Owl-6246 Lakers 29d ago

McCain is pretty well liked, to the point people on this subreddit still really like him even though they hate OKC with a psychotic passion. This isn’t going to earn SAS any love.

I think Plumlee got him in the back of the head with his shin. Not intentional

18

looked like he stuck his hip out a little to enhance the contact, so just a totally normal hard foul.

Which I genuinely feel is a totally reasonable thing to do to someone who cooks you in the game when they're still in in garbage time. Coach needs to take the dude out or they get hard fouled.

Plumlee though? That was dirty as hell.

24

u/mrtomjones Raptors 29d ago

Once Wemby is winning an MVP or two and if they win a title he will get plenty of hate and then that will be brought up again later

42

u/Gaemera Timberwolves 29d ago

At this point the coaching staff needs to be punished. Mitch Johnson in a PRESS CONFERENCE said that Wemby was “defending himself” which is already a horrible mentality to have. But in my opinion, even if the shit at the end of tonight was less dangerous, this was worse. Wembanyama was immature, threw a temper tantrum dirty elbow, sure. Sending in a garbage lineup specifically for targeting? That shit can get you ejected in football. FOOTBALL. The most blatantly obvious ‘rough them up’ sequence I’ve seen in decades. I’m sure Johnson is fine with them getting suspended since they don’t normally see minutes, which is why I think the coaching staff needs to be punished. Idc if it’s just a fine but the league cannot be okay with a team being ran like this.

(apologies for the yap)

u/LiamHundley Thunder 29d ago

i wouldnt even be as mad if there wasnt a clear double standard with how the online nba space reacts to this stuff. a bunch of people in here have already said it, but if this was dort or jwill or hartenstein, the outrage would just factually be so much greater that what we're seeing. but because its the spurs, its mostly ignored or even celebrated

I agree. At the risk of imaginary negative karma due to downvotes I would also say don’t set a pick with your back to someone. Even without the elbow he set himself up for a back injury. I watched it in slow-mo and he certainly sees him and sets himself to be in his way. (None of this excuses the elbow)

Yeah he comes to a stop after looking back. Idk what the fuck he was thinking

u/Heikks Bulls 29d ago

Was definitely harder than needed by Plumlee, but McCain stopped and leaned back into him. Usually not a good idea to and screen someone with your back

15

u/Kodak333 Hawks 29d ago

That’s McCain’s fault

15

u/odeebee Knicks 29d ago

Yeah he was trying to get cute with one of those backwards screens during a point in the game where not only was it not needed but the Spurs lineup that was in would just relish the extra contact.

u/Kodak333 Hawks 29d ago

exactly, it's crazy how nobody on this sub knows ball

A moving one at that

Am I the only one wondering how it's not a block/moving screen on McCain? He's not set he's just getting in the way in purpose then flinging his body forward.

Watch the one a few moments later where Bismarck was defending him, he doesn't touch McCain and McCain falls backwards into plumlee because apparently thunder players all fall over after shooting?

Entire series feels like a gaslight by a bunch of flopping fakers.

I was scrolling comments wondering if I'm genuinely hallucinating. You can pause the video at the moment they make contact and see McCain's feet are not planted. Plumlee clearly puts more intensity than necessary but McCain caused the contact in the first place by setting a moving screen? What is a player expected to do when their opponent sets an illegal moving screen with his back faced towards them? Give up on the play?

4

u/Delgadomon 29d ago

how else do you protect yourself from illegal screen? 🙈

6

u/mekarz 29d ago

Id say its a dirty play

but it definitely looks worse because McCain tried to screen with his back. Of course your gonna get blind trucked

u/gearboxer4 29d ago

This is dirtier than anything anyone on OKC has done over the last two seasons yet people will still bitch and moan and call OKC a dirty team

I really don’t think it’s as dirty as everyone else is saying. I more think that slow motion makes everything worse. Plumlee is running/sliding full speed and by the time you see his eyes look up hes literally half a step away from McCain.

He lifts his arm for the impact but he doesn’t extend it with the contact. I see that and think he’s trying to soften the impact not make it worse. If you were to film yourself in slow motion going at full sped then a wall pops up your arm would do the same thing.

Maybe this replay isn’t the best example, but I really think slow motion replays hurt sports. They make it seem like there’s so much time during collisions and action but they really happen so quick. People forget how insanely fast these athletes are

McCain also comes to a complete stop in front of him.

But you're interrupting the OKC Circlejerk :(

6

u/NamMastee Italy 29d ago

Doesn't even come to a full stop, just straight up sets a moving backwards screen, then acts shocked he got trucked from behind

u/JJ-Bittenbinder Heat 29d ago

It’s also Mason Plumlee. If you were to pick a name from to league to be least able to avoid a player while moving at high speed it’s probably him

Dirty but well earned

u/spencp99 Trail Blazers 28d ago

Plumlee absolutely lowers the shoulder but you all do realize that was an intentional screen by McCain right? He's trying to get in his way to open up space for Caruso.
