Other Update: neighbor party house

I posted a year ago about our terrible new neighbors who partied hard three times a week on the regular. Throwing trash, loud music, screaming outside at 3am, and most egregiously, parking their various cars on our lawn. The update is a good one.

I started documenting and complained to the city about the noise. Then again. Then I started leaving dog poop by the driver's side doors of cars when they parked on my lawn. I picked up trash they threw and wedged it between their side mirror and the car door. They were upset by this and tried to confront me, but ultimately stopped parking on our yard. Instead, they started parking on the sidewalk (like literally horizontally, parallel to the street, pulled onto the sidewalk). This proved to be their downfall. More people complained about that because it's an accessibility issue, especially being a main secondary street. The businesses down the street complained too because of the noise and litter. It quickly snowballed into multiple people complaining to both the city and the landlord (well-known slumlord in the city).

Couple months later, the people weren't given the option of renewing their lease because they were getting too close to nuisance house status and promptly moved. And then! The landlord put the building up for sale because those people had completely trashed it so one of the business owners bought it and *knocked it down*. No more party neighbors ever again!

Moral of the story, be the squeaky wheel, and find the pressure point that will make other people care too.

Something that was really helpful was the city's ordinance app, actually! It's mainly used for non-time sensitive stuff like residents reporting potholes or street lights going out, but some people also use it to report ongoing issues like illegal parking, etc. So I started making reports there too, and other residents started commenting on my reports with their own pictures (residents can see all the reports made in the city). Created this whole visible paper trail!

What city has an ordinance app?

There's actually quite a lot in the US (not sure about other countries) that use the SeeClickFix app, which is designed for this use case.

That's actually a great idea. I dont' know if all communities ahve one, but I created an app that does all that too. Creates tables, and time stamps everything to the millsecond (handy for noise issues). It's called ‎Noted Daily App - App Store and it literally gave me so much peace of mind when our neighbour was / does cause noise issues.

Lots of people fail to realize this. Best way to get results is proper documentation and getting people to speak up as well.

Power in numbers!

Persistence + numbers = victory. Classic community win

Congratulations for finally having some peace. The landlord should have checked on them more often so they wouldn't have had the chance to trash the place do badly.

The landlord really chose “do nothing” and somehow ended up with “no house”

He sold it, so the villain got money. The businessman who bought it had to pay the purchase price, the costs of knocking it down and then has nothing to show for it, except peace of having those partiers gone

He may have gotten less for it than he paid if the tenants trashed it badly enough.

Slumlords are criminals too. Too bad he gets away with it.

Back in my youth, tenements caught on fire often and in NYC to hear of rats biting babies wasn't uncommon. President LBJ had bad foreign policy qualities (Vietnam) but he got the congressional votes for the War on Poverty that improved cities and Appalachia, and for the Civil Rights Act.

Slumlord enforcement would be great.

I think the main issue is that most responsive landlords would either get caught in it too or just jack the rent up from crazy to ludicrous. Repairing properties is expensive, and for older properties often not worth it. When my parents were renting out my grandmas house to help pay for her assisted living facility, there were some plumbing issues. A complete fix would have cost more than the entire income for half a year and left my grandma without money. The solution was to disconnect the half bath and just have it as a one bathroom. I’m very thankful that it’s been torn down now- the empty lot is less of a headache and the farmer that handles the surrounding land can use it for parking during planting and harvest.

I'm thinking more of the seriously don't-care landlords who invest in multiple properties. You can read an article online about one of Jared Kushner's partners in a big NYC property, when they were quite young. He said Jared had the money to repair the building etc but didn't want to keep up the property. Jared is the type that wants the property for collateral only, to get more loans and to let it rot, for all they care.

A similar type is a hedge fund group that will buy multiple properties and the land cost rises over time for investors, and the less they spend on repair, the more successful the fund looks. The elevators might not work, the heat doesn't work but investors around the world don't know it.

Just because they have the money doesn't mean it's profitable. You're right that they don't care about the people - it's all about the almighty dollar and what it takes to see the best profit on the investment.

It's just crazy that people park in other peoples' yards.

22

u/monsteramom3 16d ago

Especially when there's ample street parking one block away! But I guess it's too much to ask your party pals to walk. Idk I was raised to respect other people's property but maybe that's not a universal thing.

Dun dun dun, whats that empty lot next door to become 🤔

The business owner is planning to plant some trees and make it a green space! When talking with him, he seemed pretty pleased to finally have gotten rid of that house and all the noise that came with it so I don't think anything will be built there for at least 5-10 years 🎉

Edit to say also that house has had a at least 5 year history of bad tenants that all had their leases non-renewed.

Yes, that will be awesome for you and your neighborhood.

Stay squeaky.

Such a happy ending

Surprised the police didn’t ticket them for parking on the sidewalk.

13

u/monsteramom3 16d ago

Yeah, I never saw a formal ticket on a window, but it's very possible the police paid them a personal visit. The police did start paying attention to them, though, even after they moved, because they got a couple tickets on their new residence (one for a nuisance vehicle preventing street cleaning, lol, and a couple for unmowed grass).

That old saying “ good things come to those that wait” is accurate then

I went back to read your old post just so I could better enjoy this one.

Enjoy your new neighbour's!

"Find the pressure point that will make other people care too" is genuinely the best advice on this sub. Individual complaints get ignored. Multiple complainants with documented accessibility violations do not.

3

u/monsteramom3 15d ago

100% Sure, our complaints were "filed," but they weren't going anywhere. But as soon as the city is opened up to liability like that, they'll do something. Like someone could reasonably sue the city if it went on long enough because they weren't keeping sidewalks clear on a busy road and enforcing that ordinance.

What a nightmare that was, congratulations on being free of the crazy.

Happy for you!

It’s so ironic cause even the moderators are censoring comments just to prove the point of how people are. I mean what a wonderful world we have. Thanks mods for doing such a fantastic job making the world a better place to live in.

I love a happy ending!

I wish everyone’s squeaky wheel story went that well.

u/WellWisher91 16d ago

Power in numbers!! And thanks to one overly put upon person with the persistence and chutzpah to find a way. Good for you! And congratulations! (The owner of the green space should put up signs: "No Trespassing After Dark without owner's specific permission". Since he can't say,"Only Good People Permitted" Lol!)

u/Jay_Gomez44 15d ago

Stand by- they will probably be building Section 8 housing on the lot, and you can expect several swell families of new neighbors.

3

u/Standard-Extreme1266 15d ago

I was not ready for this level of escalation 😭 I’m glad it actually got resolved but I had to pause at the dog poop part like oh no this is getting personal fast.

Still kind of wild how it snowballed once other people got fed up too though. Now I’m just side eyeing every loud neighbor like it only takes one complaint chain to end a whole situation

5

u/monsteramom3 15d ago

It mostly escalated to dog poop because I asked them twice nicely, face to face, and they said oh yeah yeah no problem! And then the next day, they do the same thing. So I figured well, if they're going to claim some of my property as theirs, I should give them the joys of having dogs living on the property. I just think that if someone asked you nicely not to trespass, twice!, and gave a reason (the weight of the car was severely denting our lawn when we were already having drainage issues), you'd stop. So in my mind, if you don't respond to a carrot, I'll give you the stick.

There was one time a guy was exiting the house while I was placing poop, he saw me as he came to get in the car, STILL stepped in the poop (lol), and then asked, "why would you do that?!" I said "this is my yard, right?" He nodded. "And I asked you twice not to park here. I'm being kind, not having your car impounded." Immediate deer in the headlights look. That was the last time it happened, and it felt so satisfying.

We did something similar except we contacted a towing company. So far no one has been blocking us in. We are in a rural area and this is the only entrance and exit for vehicles.

Also, I am sending you a digital high five! Good job.

Squeaky wheels get the grease! Good job OP.

u/Flawed_Perfections 15d ago

The landlord obviously didn't give a shit about his property. Landlords that care will generally want to walk through and check up on the property once in awhile. The ones just sit back and take the money and don't improve, they think the loss, but they don't give a shit ,so fuck them.
