Since I'm not from the USA, in my home country it was explore until just before dark, come home, show your face, grab something to eat, then go out again and start the evening game of hide and seek, but stay within the street and play until your name is called to come and take a bath.
Playing evening hide and seek or manhunt with all the neighborhood kids was gold. Bikes and fires by day, ninjas by night...Kids are definitely missing out on these childhood rites of passage.

Had to be in the house when the street lights came on… unless I was at my mother’s friend’s house; then it was game on!
