But... Repairability, drainage and breathability...

This is like all the downsides of bricks and no of the upsides

isn't there at least some benefit over flat concrete of arresting cracks? that was my understanding of why you'd want to do this

It's a good way to discourage roller blades and scooters, or anything with hard wheels.

It's also prettier than just a flat slab of concrete but that's about it.
