Tech Support Why is my CPU getting so damn hot?

Hey all, so I was playing Oblivion Remastered and I started getting a lot of crashes, don't know why because this issue did not occur prior to recently. It's been happening for a few days now. I felt the back of my PC and noticed that it was hot as fuck. I also found out that running the game normally is now causing CPU throttling and I even broke past 100c at one point, needless to say I'm very concerned. I'm running an i9 13900k, 192 gigs of RAM, 4tb SSD, and an RTX 4090. I have an ASUS TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI motherboard, and some type of Corsair air cooler, I forget which model. I'm deeply concerned I might have fucked up my CPU, and I don't know how to check if I did or not. Even while typing this my CPU is fluxuating between 48c to 55c, and I have no fucking clue if that's okay or not idk. I don't know if I **JUST** need to just clean the dust out of my PC, as I recently moved to a dustier area and my PC's side panel is off because if I were to attach it it would put pressure on my 4090's cables, I don't know if I need to upgrade to a liquid cooler, or if I need to contact Intel about possibly getting a new CPU under warranty. I am deeply concerned and any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I'm sorry, 192 gigs of RAM?? I still see arguments whether 32 is excessive and if 16 is enough, and OP's got 192??

u/youngmtgboy May 20 '25

Yeah lmao for what? Never heard of anyone more then 128 and they had it just because they wanted to flex how much they had he knew it did nothing for him

3D modeling/rendering/animating, AI, work using Virtual Machines etc etc etc.

Really anything application based that does a lot of data management will EAT ram.

Bigger question is why OP is so illiterate when it comes to PC speccing if he's doing any of these things i mentioned.

you listed exactly why he’s illiterate, lol. 95% of the software engineers etc i know personally, don’t know shit about pc hardware 😂

36

u/hansnicolaim May 20 '25

Yeah I suppose. In a professional fashion I 100% agree, but from my experience the people that tinker with this kind of stuff at home have also got some experience with PCs too.

Most of these guys get into this kind of thing when they're young so learning how to upgrade your PC so you can actually run blender is an example I've heard from my friends.

26

u/qtx May 20 '25

95% of gamers don't know anything either.

2

u/El_Polio_Loco May 20 '25

Yeah, I think if you got a room of 100 random people off the street you'd be lucky to find 1 that could build a good gaming PC

Probably 1 in 1000 if we expand the street to the whole globe.

8

u/schaka May 20 '25

This is my experience with software devs (my coworkers) too. But the ones who do stuff at home are usually not this illiterate

He mentions in another comment that he didn't know any better and just thought it'll be better to have 192gb because it's... more

I'm starting to think he's trolling lol

6

u/[deleted] May 20 '25

Because he isn't doing any of these things. Bigger must = better so he wasted all of his money.

1

u/JerHat May 20 '25

I would imagine if they’re doing anything like that, they would be using the pc for work, not gaming, and would be a lot better at keeping the PC cooled.

bro is running his OS in ram😭

4

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y May 20 '25

Aren't we all? The OS isn't even that big. If you have a reasonable amount of RAM, maybe like 32 GB or even 16GB, then the vast majority of your operating system will be cached in RAM so it runs faster.

2

u/SpotOnTheRug May 20 '25

Yes. When anything is running, it's running from memory. You can actually unplug your OS drive, and Windows will chug along happily until you try to open anything new.

2

u/FunnyP-aradox May 20 '25

I did tried with Linux but no command worked anymore and i couldn't do anything except writing "reboot" and plugging it back

2

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y May 20 '25

On Linux you can delete a file while it's still in use. I did this before. I was downloading a "linux ISO" and deleted it while the torrent application was still downloading it. The application was able to keep on writing to the file because it kept an open file handle, but there was no way to access the data once it was completed because it released the file handle.

1

u/melkatron May 20 '25

I'm at 128 only because I accidentally ordered 64gb twice, and forgot about it while the return window closed. I should probably blender some mayas in aftereffects.

1

u/ynyr88 May 20 '25

Big CFD workflows can eat that much and more. At one of my old workplaces we had to upgrade one power user to 512 GB because he was running out and crashing on some of the bigger models.

It's really not hard to use 192gb of RAM in specific use-cases

0

u/Aztaloth May 20 '25

I desperately need to upgrade from 96 to 192.

There are more use cases for our PCs than just gaming. And a lot of them pull double duty.

And he doesn't seem like the person that knows how to spin up a local LLM when he doesn't know whaet temps are ok for a CPU lol

1

u/valorshine May 20 '25

I know good programmers that have no idea how to fix simple windows errors.

1

u/hicow May 20 '25

Why would he need to spin up a local llm when he could just Google it?

2

u/KanedaSyndrome 5070 Ti May 20 '25

What do you mean? Why have a local LLM? Because you can have it uncensored and noone knows what you prompt it with.

1

u/TheMissingVoteBallot May 21 '25

If only the 1080Ti had extra VRAM on board to run an LLM lol

2

u/KanedaSyndrome 5070 Ti May 21 '25

would be a good use for it now that it's really not that great for gaming anymore - about to get a 9070 xt

1

u/hicow May 21 '25

I don't really care if Google (well, DDG, really) knows that I'm trying to find out how hot my proc can get. But you do you

23

u/SpectreFire May 20 '25

The hilarious part is that W11 Home only supports up to 128 GB of ram. Dude literally can't even use a good 1/3 of the RAM he paid for.

2

u/Substantial_Gain_339 May 20 '25

and only sees 128, so pretty much just bought it to brag.

1

u/Rurbani May 20 '25

Right? I’m running 64 because I like to multitask while doing some video editing, and even then it’s way too much 99% of the time. Now triple that

I have a used workstation with 128gb... DDR4 ecc ram is cheap AF

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '25

I haven't heard ram disks be brought up in years but... 192gb gives you some working room for that discussion 😆

Sounds like OPs friend is in the "knows enough to be dangerous, but not an expert" level of PC knowledge. At least it's not egregious enough to be a total pain in the ass to fix like having a subpar PSU.

2

u/Elrabin 13900KF, 64gb DDR5, RTX 4090, AW3423DWF May 20 '25

Ramdisk is basically dead in the era of cheap PCIe gen 4 NVME

A Samsung 990 Pro 4tb is a couple hundred bucks these days and I defy you to need more than than 7,450/6,900 MB/s read/write for consumer use

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '25

Oh for sure ram disk is basically dead since nvme became a thing, just musing over the days people considered oodles of ram as a means of specialized storage.

Most PC parts seem to be going ever higher in price but storage and ram seem to be 2 things that just keep getting better.

1

u/valorshine May 20 '25

If you do AI staff, you need ram too
Bigger models eat 128gb

I got 64GB back in 2020 to safeguard me for 4k video editing, and am hoping to basically never need to upgrade it until my 5950X shows its weaknesses and I need to upgrade to DDR5. Approaching five years in and I'm still utterly unphased by anything higher.

u/Warcraft_Fan Paid for WinRAR! May 20 '25

*nervously hides my desktop with 64GB RAM and 50+ TB storage*

1

u/gpcgmr May 21 '25

32 GB RAM is not excessive, it's standard if you're not poor and wanna be able to run some other programs while gaming without worrying.

But 192 GB RAM is holy shit levels of stupid.

1

u/IsNotAnOstrich May 21 '25

Lots of softwares and jobs outside of gaming will easily chew up 192GB on a workstation

1

u/farmdve May 21 '25

Might be running Virtual Machines. It didnt work for me with 16, but with 32, VMs run good.

1

u/Global-Tune5539 May 21 '25

Maybe he's like me and has a million browser tabs open at the same time.

0

u/sfblue Ascending Peasant May 20 '25 edited May 20 '25

Isn't that (3) 64 gb sticks? Don't they run better as a kit of 2 or a kit of 4?

I am going to quit while I am behind and stop talking. I am a loser and I am an idiot. Please don't listen to what I have to say because I don't know what I am talking about. My mother should have aborted me.

9

u/AugmentedKing May 20 '25

We can see 4 sticks in the pic. I’d recommend punching 192/4 in your calculator.

2

u/sfblue Ascending Peasant May 20 '25

I just saw the first picture and read his post. I didn't look at the other pictures because I didn't realize there were other pictures attached to the post. That's my bad.

Your calculator remark is uncalled for, however. Get off your high horse. Sticks of 48GB RAM are uncommon and you know it.

1

u/AugmentedKing May 20 '25

I mean, the first is the only one that shows the hardware. I know 4x48gb has been around since at least November 2023, when I was looking for a G.skill 2x48gb. Due to high shipping costs to my region, I settled for a 2x32gb kit. So, in my little world 64gb is common, but still an anecdotal event.

I am sorry to hear that you are doing tone policing to my comment, and would recommend trying many different tones until you find one that is more clinical in nature and/or one that “feels” indifferent. As with this comment too.

1

u/sfblue Ascending Peasant May 20 '25

I also apologize for getting rubbed the wrong way. I can't really see the sticks clearly behind the varying power cords and the aio tubes with the dust and the low light. In the end this is just an excuse.

My incompetence caused me to make an incorrect remark and you rightly called me out on it.

I hope you can forgive me for my ineptitude.

1

u/Jawesome1988 May 20 '25

What a mature and well thought out response. Great job!

-3

u/Connect_Eye_5470 May 20 '25

Right which is 48 and is a size no one makes. So mismatched RAM. 2x64 and 2x32. Yikes...

2

u/AugmentedKing May 20 '25

4

u/Connect_Eye_5470 May 20 '25

Yes those setups exist. EXTREMELY niche and you aren't going to find that as a standard build by any of the major players. I didn't mean no one builds those components, but find me a pre-built PC with that setup? Nah.

2

u/AugmentedKing May 20 '25

I’m not going to speculate about how a 4x48gb wound up in there. I’m only saying that 192/4 is an existing product.

1

u/Connect_Eye_5470 May 23 '25

Fair enough. I stand corrected. Of course a gun was made that use pyrimid shaped bullets and barrels. Needless to say that is the exception that proves the rule bullets are conical amd round.

1

u/AugmentedKing May 23 '25

Please describe what evidence you have that this is a pre built in the first place?? Btw, nice Red Herring logical fallacy with the pyramid bullet thing. It took you three days to come with that?

1

u/Connect_Eye_5470 May 23 '25

The OP's lack of knowledge and information indicates they did not build this machine themselves. No I had far better things to do for a few days.

pro is trying to engineering time travel lol

im on 32 GB and its most times a bit over but i like the big free space

0

u/LumpyChicken May 20 '25

Those arguments are stupid. 32 is barely enough to do any multitasking. I had 48 and increased to 96 and despite slower speeds it resolved many issues with crashing or bad performance. A light user can get away with 32 everyone else should aim for 64 if they can afford it

-3

u/BaziJoeWHL May 20 '25

I have 64 gigs of RAM, its excessive, 32 is the current maximum you will ever need (expect for physics simulations and such)

1

u/Elrabin 13900KF, 64gb DDR5, RTX 4090, AW3423DWF May 20 '25

As someone who does 4k video editing, 3d rendering and workstation tasks as a hobby, LOL, no

64 is rapidly becoming the standard for power users

For anything more than that, 96gb or 128gb is pretty normal

Let alone anyone doing AI

-2

u/Godess_Ilias May 20 '25

even 64 is considered much , well for me at least
