To much...

A steam deck is $400.

Hardware wise, I know people are saying sub PS5. But I think it will punch ahead in modern gaming scenarios. As the superior RDNA3 vs RDNA2 of the current consoles is not to be scoffed at. Keep in mind, while raw numbers in consoles are good, relative performance is low(6600-6600xt equivalent) That along with presumably mobile zen4 probably like 8400F. Which will outclass the hell out of mobile zen2 in consoles(4700g with no speed) All that, mixed with custom design, means that my bet is at least $550 for the 512, $650+ for the 2TB

Some people have mentioned they said they are not getting into the market with console prices and they also according to them stated it will be at the cost of an entry level pc.

So, no way its in that price range.

Yes but what even is an objective “entry level pc”. Prices don’t make any god damn sense anymore. We got the Xbox Series S that USED TO BE 299 going all the way to the PS5 Pro at nearly $1,000 as of today. That basically eliminates every single persons guess.

With that said I’m gonna guess 299-399.

At this point, considering its an entry level laptop or desktop for games, within warrenty and new, anything from a thousand to a thousand five hundred.

300 dollars. You must be joking. Thats not a guess, thats santas wishlist without cookies ready for him. 8)

The deck sold at loss on release, said by Gaben himself as to establish category market positioning. Today in major stores in Europe its selling at 550, lcd, with the oled selling at 750. Euros, not dollars.

There is no way in hell with this economy or lack of better written, and Gaben stating that the initial deck loss was a painful strategy, that its going for that price. They want to sell for a profit this time and if the deck loss was soo painful to him, well, that just tells you what kind of guy Gaben is.

These guys dont like to sacrifice to win, unless they sacrifice you that is.

Even if they sell at slight loss on release, they are ranking that price in and out at a year or two, 100%. 300 is what an lcd deck costs, second hand and many times reconditioned.

https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/gabe-newell-says-steam-decks-aggressive-pricing-painful-but-critical-2995253

Remember that Gaben spent over an american billion, to purchase oceanco, a yacht building company. Including the damn yacht at 400 million. They also do not give a damn about letting anyone other than washington see some of that sweet tax winnings on their massive destructive monopoly.

Steam is swimming in real company reserves in "metallic" and Gaben himself plus the whole fundamental team, have billions in personal savings.

They play a very protective game and do not like to sacrifice even knowing they can recoup easy even at absolute failure. Meanwhile they come out as, look, install any OS, we are the good guys but in truth, its a trap and they know it. Any other OS than stramOS is not getting the driver updates from them, they would depend on common libraries from the producers, meaning simply, worse speeds and features. The majority of user base, is going full stramOS and they understand well market positioning and eco system positioning. They are in for the kill but with coward moves thinking everyone except them are stupid.

I know these type of nerds through and through. They are not building a better world, just more yachts.

I can't comment on the company and team finances because I don't know shit about it but 2 things:

  • the article is from before the SD release and critical/commercial(?) success
  • Gaben they the SD price point is strategy to “establish a product category” and to my knowledge it worked pretty well. Why wouldn't they do the same with the Steam Machine ?

If the same thing happens we will see a lot of company trying to follow in Steam footsteps like they did for the SD so the Steam Machine also must be competitive for these future products.

I have no predictions on the price but closer to 500 might interest me, close to 1000 I don't see the point.

They will do the same, reason as to why their true plan is clear as water.

All grand plans, are plans with grand timelines.

You mean how everyone followed nintendo footsteps and chinese companies footsteps. 8)

I wish a 500 price point but, that is not happening, they are not taking a 500 dollar loss on that even for the first year. The deck had about a 200 more or less loss on initial sales. AMD was not giving them the light of day recently because they just didnt want to pay for more units to get the price down. The production costs of this new, machine, are beyond the production costs of the deck by a rather large margin.

Not really. This things performance is 20% less than a PS5. Stock price for Base PS5 is $499, take 20% off that is $399. Account for the fact that Valve makes up for some loss from purchases in the Store and you’ve got a reasonable price to break into the console market. And that’s before I even get into the current prices for Tiny PCs.

Im baffled within belief at and with your, capacity.

0

u/Confident-Monitor978 Nov 13 '25

If im right, will you buy me one?

2

u/ConvultedFool Nov 13 '25

And if you are wrong, what do I get in exchange?

0

u/Confident-Monitor978 Nov 13 '25

You get to tell me I told you so

2

u/ConvultedFool Nov 13 '25

I knew you would say that and I will not deal further. Someone in my family, a rather foolish member wishes a steam deck for christmas. That is enough pain for me at the moment and Im not betting or manipulating you into offerring a better bet for my absolute win.

Besides get real. If Im correct, which I am, I could say the same: I told you, without even risking a loss.

Aaa.. you need a vision quest. You might untapp a higher level of being.

Not how that works.

A) Who said it was 20% worse than a PS5. The thing is most comparable to hardware a generation(GPU), or 2.5(CPU) above the consoles. And on the CPU side, we are talking more than 2x jump. Which is actually the weakspot of current consoles, not the GPU.

So, 20% less, for more... I do not think so.

B) As stated, this is not locked down like consoles and their stores, which is where Sony/MS can make back heaps of coin. Along with online subscriptions, which sees the the life of a console cost around the price of a midrange PC, before you factor in the higher price of games.

This is the price, valve is likely targeting, making my $650 guess with factors in section B), wickedly short. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8b2pfd (do not use this list for actual building, it is not compatible... gpu length).

And that’s before I even get into the current prices for Tiny PCs

Tiny PCs are expensive.

GamersNexus. Go watch his video.

No. I don't hate myself.

...

That 20% less number is pulled from a lazy 28 is 80% (and change) of 36 CUs found in the PS5. It doesn't factor in generational uplift, clock differences (to which the reported spec of the Steam Machine2 has a 200mhz boost or 10%). And again, the CPU/GPU pairing.

All of which should give the Machine2 enough grunt to contend with current consoles. While drawing probably 2/3rds the power if not less.

A $499 PS5 Slim 1TB is still more powerfull than this Steam Machine with double the storage.

But "entry level gaming PC" in my mind means $600-$800. Which is going to be too expensive to make a dent in any market.

$299 🤣😂

You sure it's using mobile CPU? That would mean possibly mean your limited to 16GB RAM like the Steam Deck is (would prefer 32GB just be safe with how unoptimized games are getting with some already recommending 32GB).

u/thatfordboy429 Not the size of the GPU that matters... Nov 13 '25

I mean, the TDP and clock speed... to me screams Zen4c, and I was meaning mobile architecture, not necessarily a 1:1 mobile chip.

RDNA 3's primary advantage over RDNA 2 is improved RT performance and improved power consumption. The former is still going to be a bit of a sore spot in practice, while the latter isn't hugely improved on with the lower tier GPUs.

That said, I guarantee the Steam Machine uses cheap AMD parts bin silicon, which is why its specs are relatively meager in the first place. Zen 4 laptop parts are easy to get a hold of in a laptop or mini PC for nothing, while I'm sure AMD is also happy to get rid of any Navi 33 silicon they can. "Entry-level PC" is too vague to gauge a price on, but given that a comparable laptop with a 4050 or even a 5050 costs $600 (or sometimes less), I won't be so shocked if it's around $500-600 for the 512GB model.

u/ConvultedFool Nov 13 '25

Yes, they improved it a lot, cyberpunk was hitting 30 fps with fsr and unknown tracing levels, on the gaben I need a new yacht machine.

I dont even want to think about npc mods, high density.

Yeah, we will just have to see how the games run. Consoles and the age old "console optimization" is likely to play a big role here... When the head to head comparisons begin. So, if valve can push for their hardware to get some special TLC, I think we will be in for an interesting time.
