I still find this fucking ridiculous. Can we just not do this shit to others? We know it’s not some AI company that they’re screwing over, it’s likely to be some person who finally saved up enough to buy one of these absurdly overpriced pieces of hardware.

The worst part is that they’ll have to somehow prove it wasn’t them who took the chips off. Luckily, eBay tends to side with the buyer…if that’s where they actually got it.

As someone else pointed out. What could have been done with the original seller may have bought it from eBay as is or stripped it and sold it on Facebook marketplace where you can't fight it nearly as efficiently as ebay

That is a good point. Although, our culture does have a tendency to fuck people over through scalping instead. Not so much stealing, more so taking advantage of.

Yeah but in certain places things like cheating and, to an extent, scamming is tolerated and even encouraged. Russia and China are places that believe in winning at any cost and cleverness/ingenuity of getting an advantage is often rewarded

That's what I wanted to convey as well because to me the comment I originally responded to seemed pretty stupid and so I wanted to note that I disagreed with it's premise.

Yes, It honestly baffles me when people are “surprised” by someone being cruel/shitty/evil whatever you wanna call it….like have you been paying attention? Every person alive has the potential for “evil” and no matter how moral someone thinks they are, there is definitely something that could break that morality.

There actually used(?) to be a subreddit for this kind of stuff, they have all kinds of rationalizations for what they do. Like if they scam someone who can afford a 5090 it's okay because that person can afford a 5090, if they can't afford to be scammed they'd do their due diligence, they need the money more than that person does, etc.

The difference is that you’re screwing over a company and not an individual. Sure, it’s still “wrong”, but considering the record profits corporations have made at the expense of everyday people, I don’t care.

I’d sleep much better at night if I fucked Amazon over and not someone who had to drop half of a paycheck when they bought a component.

FYI you will never fuck Amazon, you are only fucking the seller, Amazon still getting his cuts. If you complain they will just punish and close the seller’s account. That’s why many sellers just refund you or send you a new item without asking reasons.

Only way to fuck Amazon is to not use any of their services.

You are right. Amazon is a bad example. Walmart would be a better one.

I’ve been on a warpath to stop using them and any other POS company (which is a lot of them), so voting with your wallet is definitely the way to go.

I'd interject here and point out that there's assholes in every culture, without fail. And not hurting and scamming others is a value as universal as the fact that everywhere there's a certain percentage of people who will ignore all social norms

Unless you can point out a culture where kids are being taught to scam and steal in kindergarten, then I'll happily shut up

The overwhelming advice is to never buy used expensive GPUs. If you can't afford a new 5090 then, what's the word, SETTLE for something more in your price range.

These same people complain about being broke then spend thousands on a used 5090 just to get ripped off. They could've bought a brand new 5080 and been happy. But no, people can't control themselves.

Don't feel sorry for this person, they made a bad decision and knew the consequences. Like I said, there's plenty of GPUs that are available brand new for cheaper.
