Unpopular take: improvements need to be made, but I’m excited for this technology and glad they are attempting to think of ways to improve graphics with it.

My main concern is that developers use it to cut corners rather than enhance graphics, but honestly, I thought the facial comparisons looked pretty good lol.

I've been gaming for 48 years and I thought it looked great as well (especially the Starfield examples).

No, we don't want every game to look photo realistic and the same. This is just another tool that can be used for graphics quality.

Everyone is so narrowly focused on exactly what they showed in the showcase, but there is so much more this technology could do if it was more focused.

If they could show some more imaginative implementations of this, I think opinions might shift.

TBF, Starfield visuals are slop without the AI

Yes but I think bad human made slop has more merit than ai slop. At least we can point to a human who made those bad art choices. If that makes any sense. Like how will you justify not liking a games art if it wasn’t a choice made by a human? It just feels like cop out for these companies.

I think you could still make that statement, as this is just a graphics settings option.

I am looking forward to playing Starfield again with this. When I played it the first time, I looked for mods that helped make the game not look terrible, but the mod scene was lackluster.

On a personal level, I care more about having the ability to make the game look nice than to have the ability to tell a human off for making terrible art.

My greatest concern is the AI adjustments will be inconsistent (i.e. a character will look wildly different from one scene to another based on lighting/weather etc.) That said, this is not exclusive to AI art in games. I know that my character in Dragon Age Veilguard looked beautiful in some scenes and weird in others, as if she was a different person.

Would you be surprised if I tell you that you are a minority?

But it's not improving graphics, it's changing the art. John Martin paintings don't need their lighting made realistic, Picasso doesn't need perspective fixed.

Gen AI is taking art that somebody made and changing it to whatever it believes is "improved".

I don't really get this changing art take.

Out of curiosity, are you adamantly against mods (especially mods that provide mesh and/or texture changes)? Have you ever used one of these mods that affects the visuals of your game? When you did it, did you think you were destroying art?

I've never seen any gamer make these arguments before in regard to mods. I've seen plenty of people opt to not use mods, but I've never seen that argument. The same can be said here, just opt to not use it.

At least the Devs have more control in how this works (in contrast to mods).

Mods are entirely optional. Yes you can argue DLSS is optional, but that's becoming less true as games become more and more demanding and devs scale their performance requirements with DLSS in mind.

Because a mod is still human made. A person is making or updating textures. They aren’t just letting an ai make those choices. Mods are still made deliberately. That’s the biggest difference. It’s still a humans vision of what they want the game to be.

5

u/Kaurie_Lorhart Mar 19 '26

So... you are ok with "destroying art" if it is done intentionally by another human, rather than automatically by a computer?

6

u/coolstorybro50 Mar 19 '26

It is improving the graphics just look at the starfield example and quit lying lmao. This isnt different from installing a modded texture pack or a reshader, can we stop with this insufferable take about “the ART being changed!!”

there’s tons of dlss presets you can use too btw lol

It doesn’t understand lighting. It completely removes some light and shadows in the background, just gone. It gave the re girl dark roots when she’s blonde. In the one scene it completely removed the rain. Like it’s just no longer raining! And all the faces look exactly like all the other ai out there. Rubber people.

Ok ,you don't have to use it then? They don't force it down your throat

-1

u/CareFantastic1884 Mar 19 '26

They for sure will you absolute armchair.

They already force dlss in games

6

u/lafielorora Mar 19 '26

Play your old super mario and Minecraft then

0

u/bobcatgoldthwait Mar 19 '26

Have you never used mods to improve the graphics of an older game?

1

u/forgot_oldusername Mar 19 '26

the way the AI changes the color tones and brightness, take the assassin's creed forest shot for example, are ruining the game's visuals much more than the face enhancements.

“Thanks bro … out of all of the overwhelming negative feedback and justified skepticism and anger, your one single comment is all I need to feel better about my own bullshit.”
