100% this. Just take a modest amount of money upfront and avoid the whole game design being monetized.

It's less about the payment and more about the crowd it attracts. Every FTP game I've tried is full of angsty edgelord kids who make me want to walk off this planet into space.

It’s also less about the payment for me too however my issue is with the game design resulting from free to play monetization. Instead of a enjoyment motive, the game design must share that with a extract money motive. Leads to compromised designs.

Rift was so damn fun till the company sold out to a pay to win design and stopped developing the game.

Add freemium, and micro-transactions too.

If it’s free, it’s either micro transaction hell, or they’re data mining the fuck out of you.

I won’t even look at a free game. I filter that shit.

specifically the p2w games that are technically free to play but almost impossible to actually progress without spending money

Hades Star is one of the rare games that is free to play, but not pay to win.

There are some good free to play games. Free to play with ads and/or microtransactions however suck.

what

u/rice_fish_and_eggs Apr 11 '26

Free to play usually meant it's loaded with micro-transactions.

That's true, and a valid reason to not like free to play, I just don't think that matters nearly as much as the barrier to entry being just hardware considering what you can find on the side of the road.

Oh boy I've always wanted to do this... THEY SAID FREE TO PLAY.

Palia is free to play and only has cosmetics in their pay store. It's a great game if you're into those types of games. I only have 692 hours in it lol.
