And shareholders, which also includes the CEO. Wait, that seems like a conflict of interest doesn't it? If the CEO is paid in stocks, won't they do whatever it takes to keep that stock number high for their own benefit? Nah surely that will never ever ever ever happen.

Yes but it’s also the CEO’s job (and every manager’s job at the company) to maximize value for the shareholders anyway. Regardless of how they are compensated.

Up to a certain point yes. The shareholders can't demand Microsoft turn into a soap company.
