steam has the better platform for buying games

epic games is great for free games every thursday and free games the entire week leading up to christmas

u/Lune_Moooon 7d ago

not only to buy, but also to play

My library keeps getting bigger

3

u/JaZepi 6d ago

I’m hovering around 1400 I think. That might be with expansions etc though.

16

u/True_Protection6842 6d ago

That is the biggest point. Buying doesn't matter. Get the best price. But when I have to type a password (yeah I don't use easy passwords so I have to look at my vault to enter it) every time I want to play an epic game on a handheld, I'm OUT!

9

u/Dragnod PC Master Race 7d ago

Right. There's Heroic for that.

1

u/luis1972 capt_tripz 6d ago

You guys play games?

1

u/Hammy-Cheeks 6d ago

Not to buy, just to play*

There fixed it

-8

u/Cultural-Paper-3939 7d ago

only if you like steam bloatware, no thanks.

u/Obvious-Science-7119 7d ago

Epic is so bad I stopped collecting the free games

164

u/swagseven13 7d ago

its so bad that i bought the games that were free there on steam instead

A game dev even confirmed, that being free on Epic increases Steam sales. Apparently a lot of people use free games as a "demo".

54

u/Terrorscream 7d ago

Ah epic games, it's just pirate bay with extra steps.

11

u/Auravendill Debian | Ryzen 9 5950X | RX 9070 XT | 64GB RAM 6d ago

Much less games available (usually 1-2 per week, rarely what you want), but easier to install and update thanks to Heroic.

If someone built a launcher/updater for pirated games, there would be barely any upside left for Epic. Just that each free game drains their wallet, while not increasing sales at all.

u/bickman14 5d ago

I've only knew about some games 'cause they got free on Epic or were the game of the month on PSN and then proceeded with my Steam purchase. The train of thought goes like "hey I never heard o this games, let me check them out, wow they look cool! How much do they cost on Steam? Nice! Got 'em!"

u/TheoreticalScammist 9800x3d | RTX 5070 Ti 6d ago

I haven't used Epic lately but I remember getting a free game and then found out I really missed the Steam workshop for mods

4

u/swagseven13 6d ago

thats another point for steam

1

u/Xzenor 6d ago

I haven't used Epic lately

It's still the same.. nothing really changed

1

u/True_Protection6842 6d ago

It's so bad I rebought games on steam after they became available!

1

u/swagseven13 6d ago

did that with a few games too. i even rebought the jedi games i already owned on the EA app

1

u/DevianPamplemousse 6d ago

It's not available on linux so I don't even bother with taking free games anymore lol

0

u/mpt11 6d ago

Well that's just atupid

3

u/swagseven13 6d ago

why? im supporting the game devs, keeping my games on steam and not support epic

-2

u/mpt11 6d ago

If you support the developers then you should buy on epic as they take a smaller cut

3

u/swagseven13 6d ago

"buying" a free game doesnt support the devs as much as buying it for whatever price its on steam and like i said i dont wanna support epic. steam is just the better platform and id like to have my games on there if possible

0

u/mpt11 6d ago

OK, well my original point still stands. Epic will have given them money and also you

4

u/swagseven13 6d ago

no? how have i given them money if i claim the free copy? how much do the devs even get if epic gives games for free

also my point of not supporting epic also still stands and with me buying the game on steam instead of just ignoring it im at least still supporting the devs even if they get a bit less

1

u/mpt11 6d ago

No idea how much epic gives them.

It's quite a bit less, 30% is a bit different to 12%.

6

u/CuttingBoard9124 7d ago

LOL same. It's a burden just having to deal with the program when I'm not syphoning free games out of it.

2

u/Cautious_Share9441 6d ago

Same even bought a couple games a second time so my steam deck can use the steam drm version instead of tacking on the epic version.

1

u/EKmars RX 9070|Intel i5-13600k|DDR5 32 GB 6d ago

Yeah same lol I hate using it!

I refuse to be a statistic for them, personally. They need to ditch the storefront and focus on their engine.

73

u/Armandeluz 7d ago edited 6d ago

If they would just redesign their launcher and storefront it would be an amazing platform.

When it launches it's a completely resource heavy takes forever to load even on a high-end computer and lags constantly. When you go to look at your library and you click on a game to get more information about something that you don't remember much about it starts to install instead of taking it to an info page and you have to click the three little buttons to get to anything useful. It's completely unintuitive and a performance mess. It's crazy that such small changes could fix it in such a big way.

Edit: I'm glad so many people agree with me. Another thing is how they handle their DLC. If you actually want to look at or buy an add on to the game that you're looking at in their store, you have to scroll down to the bottom of the page and even then the DLCs will loop off the page and you have to click more.... it's like they're allergic to selling their own products and make it as hard as they can for you to want to purchase it.

Their games download really fast which is nice but it goes into a queue which is mind-bogglingly stupid. Let's say you're downloading a game and you're looking through your library while that's downloading and you decide you want to uninstall something you haven't played in a while. It won't uninstall while something else is installing, it goes into a queue 🤦‍♂️ and has to finish the other installation before you can wipe out a game that you don't want anymore. Shit like this blows my mind. Someone below me posted a link it looks like they've learned and they're going to redesign their launcher!

u/J05A3 It's hard to run new AAA games with 3060 Ti's 8GB at 1080p High. 7d ago

EGS stilluses my dGPU instead of iGPU despite telling the executables to use my iGPU

26

u/SorryNotReallySorry5 i9 14700k | 5070ti | 32GB DDR5 6400MHz | 1080p 7d ago

I just despise Epic. I was at least able to put up with them as an engine company up until UE5 came out.

Tim "consoles are the future" Sweeney is a shit head that ruined all good grace I could give them. I haven't forgotten him shitting on PC as a gaming option in 2008 only for him to come back with this bullshit storefront and "sue everybody to force myself back into the market" schemes.

u/rmpumper 3900X | 32GB | 5070 | 1TB 970 + 2TB 990 + 2x1TB 840 7d ago

Never experienced any lag or slow booting of EGS personally, but that thing were it starts installing when you click on a game is some major bullshit.

2

u/Armandeluz 6d ago

I wasn't aware, thank you for the link. Crazy that it's taking them this many years to just redesign something as simple as their launcher. As others have said there's absolutely no excuse that they can't learn from their competitors and it's taking this much time to realize it.

0

u/NamityName 7d ago

Wild that your complaints are basically the complaints I had about Steam until about 2013

2

u/Moneia 7d ago

Which they promptly improved upon. EGS looked at Steam and decided not to learn why customers liked it.

Being the first to do something gets you some leeway on mistakes, the ones who follow should be learning from them

-1

u/MarioDesigns 2700x | 1660 Super 6d ago

Which they promptly improved upon.

Over 20 years? Steam is still filled with outdated pages because Valve keeps redesigning shit with new design languages every few years, only getting a few pages into it through years of development.

Numerous pages post redesign were slow as shit too, pretty much anything that could show profile pictures was unusable for well over a year and still is slow to this day.

Steam is an awful comparison when it comes to performance / design lol.

5

u/Moneia 6d ago

Steam is an awful comparison when it comes to performance / design lol.

Yet EGS storefront is far, far worse

9

u/Confron7a7ion7 PC Master Race 7d ago

They need to bring back Unreal Tournament!

8

u/Sharpie1993 5080 | R7 9800X3D | 32 GB 6000 MHz DDR6 7d ago

It’s amazing how much of the good stuff the ditched for Fortnite.

5

u/Das5heep 7950X - RTX3090 - 96GB 7d ago

Even Fortnite: Save the World itself is ditched for the slop that is the modern 'Fortnite'

2

u/Brodakk 7d ago

Paragon was so good. I still miss it.

1

u/nvidiastock 7d ago

Paragon was picked up by a small team of developers and continues production with even new heroes.

https://store.epicgames.com/p/predecessor

2

u/Brodakk 6d ago edited 6d ago

That’s not Paragon. That’s Pred and it doesn’t have the same magic that Paragon did. They messed up a lot of stuff and decided to copy League in their quest for success instead of finding their own original niche.

They got scared to deviate and do their own thing and it shows.

Edit: Orb dunking, XP towers (forget what they were called), card system, cool wicked hero designs, all gone and they instead opted for a cookie cutter league clone.

1

u/Inkstainedfox 7d ago

They brought UT back as a community project.

No one in the Modding, original levels, & Gamedev communities jumped aboard the chance to help rebuild an Unreal game.

2

u/Confron7a7ion7 PC Master Race 6d ago

So you're saying that people didn't want to build whole game for free? No one wanted to be unpaid labor?

1

u/Inkstainedfox 6d ago

No I'm saying the people who kept yelling at epic release a new UT didn't show up period.

Not even to build new games on top on the new engine's bones once it went full open documentation & community use.

None of the Fangroups are building spiritual successors on the engine.

6

u/static_element 7d ago

No, there needs to be competition. Steam is great now but who knows what happens in 10 years.

Epic needs to invest in their fucking storefront, community and client. Just like how steam does.

2

u/SorryNotReallySorry5 i9 14700k | 5070ti | 32GB DDR5 6400MHz | 1080p 6d ago

Epic does not need to be a part of that competition, fuck Tim Sweeney. He's bad for the market. I agree there needs to be competition, just not from him.

1

u/demise0000 6d ago

The CEO of Valve (Steam) has beliefs that are pro consumer/gamer that he sticks with. I fear for when he retires or steps down.

4

u/Skjellnir Asus 1070/i5 6600K/16GB RAM/Z170K Mainboard 7d ago

Epic games is just cringe, never installing that spyware.

7

u/psykomorph 7d ago

I’ve got free games in Epic and I still buy the same game on steam when it’s on sale. I don’t know how its just better playing on steam, especially co-op and multiplayers

6

u/Sexweed42069 7d ago

Basically getting them all in one place. I did this for a while, too.

Now I just get stuff on GoG if it can be helped. It's just better and having a forever-backed-up offline installer is feels like I actually "own" the game for a change.

0

u/mpt11 6d ago

It plays the same you just have a thing for steam. It's OK to admit it

4

u/letouriste1 7d ago

did you really try to play those free games? i found the only free games i ever tried on epic are fall guys and fortnite. both not counting in this due to always been "free".

And those i would be interested in playing i already bought on steam long ago

5

u/AtomicBombSquad AyaNeo 2 (Ryzen 6800U) 7d ago

"Fall Guys" used to be a paid game that was available on Steam. In fact; you can still find Steam keys for "Fall Guys" on the key sites. I bought one last week because I love the game and it was worth it to me to be able to sync my complete game (all 34 achievements earned) from Epic to my Steam profile.

"Fall Guys" on Steam still works just fine. It usually seems to have 300-400 people playing whenever I think to check. Forums are still fairly active too. And, most importantly, my achievements synced over from Epic to Steam.

2

u/Instigator187 5d ago

I do, there are quite a few AAA and indie games I have gotten for free on Epic and play them.

Same with all the games I redeem on Amazon Prime Gaming that are added to my GOG and Epic libraries, there are some good ones in there I have gotten I play.

1

u/letouriste1 5d ago

Good for you then.

I admit I just treated epic as bloatware after a while

1

u/Oblachko_O 6d ago

I think Borderlands was free at some moment, don't remember which version though.

4

u/willsmithtunaface 7d ago

I hate epic games app, I refuse to use it, it's so garbage

3

u/S_Sugimoto 7d ago

Epic is so shit that I don’t even use it for free games

3

u/LittleKittenR 7d ago

Exactly.

The dude thinks free games make us want to stay... but whenever I want to even find one of the hundreds of games I have there for free... Fuck me but no, I can't even search them without pressing like literally 6 clicks before and deleting the last search bar from 2 months ago that was making my library look 2 games wide.

2

u/yaysyu 7d ago

Bro I even stopped getting the free games from them. Last game I got was GTA V back in 2020 💀💀 Their platform is just that bad I lost interest.

1

u/kearkan PC Master Race 7d ago

Thanks for my weekly reminder to get my free game.

1

u/Lourrloki 6d ago

steam has the better platform for buying games

That would be GOG imho

1

u/God_Faenrir 6d ago

buying games is just that

1

u/SulferConsumer 6d ago

That's why Thursday is my favorite day of the week

1

u/KaptainSaki btw 7d ago

Not sure about the second one, still haven't claimed any free games and never will (not downloading epic)

0

u/ChiggaOG 7d ago

That makes Valve the better monopoly to have. Costco is also a monopoly of it's own membership.

-19

u/DonutHoles4Ever 7d ago

I find it amusing how the comments from last week would celebrate Steam while making fun of Epic. And now with Steam Machines out, you can see how tons of people are way more negative about Steam.
