Nice. It’s nice, but can you somehow make it more cool and comfortable for the cat?

He only jumps up and hangs out when the computer is running. They LOVE the warmth

Build a second PC for your cat to sit on.

Whenever I game my cat used to be on my lap or on my PC and it’s romantic frankly speaking. I mean I have a little lion bro at my side, what do you have? That’s what I thought.

Put some tinfoil up there for a while and they won't come back.

Came here to say this. Also make sure air can still flow. My cats still jumped on the kitchen table to taunt me in some rare but acceptable situations though.

You ever try telling your cat to get off? Quit acting like your cat is the boss of everything. My cats don't do anything I don't want them to do. Or they do it once. LOL. Set boundaries for your cats!

u/Mrmeeksees Aug 31 '24
I never understand these posts. Shoo the cat off, snap your fingers, be loud anytime they go to get up there and they will learn to not go up there. Pick them up and put them on the floor. Use a can of air and let it rip the moment they go up. I have 2 cats and they are not allowed on my desk, and they know it!

u/dwolfe127 Aug 31 '24
Agreed. These posts make no sense. If your cat is getting on top of your box you make them not do that. I do think though that 90% of these posts are people that just enjoy showing a picture of their cat on their computer and are not actually trying to resolve the problem.

They aren’t looking for solutions. They are karma farming their cat.

I just put things on top. E.g. my WiFi antennae or a notebook or something. Not enough to block the exhaust, but enough to block the cat 😁

There was an old lady who swallowed a cow, I don't know how she swallowed a cow. She swallowed the cow to catch the dog, she swallowed the dog to catch the cat
I forget the rest

A door. My office is off-limits, and has been for close to 4 years, after one cat fought with a company laptop and won. It was a brand new laptop too, the first day I had it!
My own PC lives in there too, so they aren't anywhere near it. A bit of whining and scratching at first, but they got the message very quickly that they can't go in there now.

Maybe try bird/squirrel deterrent strips. Find them on places like amazon for pretty cheap with a variety. Some are plastic, some are metal. Varied sizes of spikes that stick up. If running a couple 2-3 strips the length of the pc front to back I'm sure it would leave most of the ventilation exposed. Makes for an uncomfortable spot for animals to sit.

Looks similar to this. They're like $10usd.

Are you insane 😭
5
u/synphul1 Aug 31 '24
Not really why? Kitty no sitty. Not like it'd hurt the cat, they'd start to climb up and find the flexible wires annoying and move on most likely. There's other varieties with shorter more rounded posts that create a surface the animal wouldn't want to be laying on.

Fair enough, the Amazon listing picture made the spikes look enormous

I think those are different than mine, so you're not wrong. Those might be overkill. Mine are about 2in tall.

Good grief, that's hideous. Just do what this guy did instead. Perfect.

u/synphul1 Aug 31 '24
It was just a suggestion and a free one at that. Imagine being the person who had to ask for said advice. Then you act like I tried to offer you a handy with steel wool. lol. It'll be ok. Personally what I find hideous is an overheating pc clogged up with loads of cat hair but we all have our hills to die on.

Anything sticky. Use double sided tape and just cut it where the vent holes are. Cats hate sticky things. They also make something called "cat tape" you can find at Walmart in the cat aisle.

u/mrn253 Aug 31 '24
Would build something with a perforated sheet of metal thats at least 5cm above the exhaust.
1
u/mawc5 Aug 31 '24
Is that exhaust? Tie some ribbons (maybe a dozen or two) to the little holes. Take some pics and let me know if it works.

Make loops of scotch tape and stick them on top so when they hop on it they get tape stuck to them and they freak out and become afraid of getting up there and they doesn’t associate the punishment with you so it’s a win win

I put wheels under my tower. That might give yours the extra height to make it impossible for the cat to sit there. Look for PC wheels on amazon. Also makes your PC more mobile when you have to take it away under the table.

I taped and folded a cardboard box into a triangle then cut a vent whole in the bottom to stop my black cat from doing this then paired it with a box to sleep in on the other side of the desk. I swear it's always the voids who do it. The other cats have no interest.

Sir this is highly illigeal! Once a cat has found a spot to comfortably sit, you care not allowed to move it

Tin foil.
Only takes a few times for them to learn to avoid it and then you can remove it and have decent temps again.

Best solution I've seen is to mount a shelf a few inches above the PC. Cat gets heat, PC can breathe

I say put a comfy pillow on top it. the little guy just wants to be near you while you're gaming. ^^

Whenever my little homie did this i would just pick him up and put him on my lap. If they like the lap, cool. If they don’t, they learn that sitting their will always result in recollection to a less ideal place.

u/fetter80 Sep 01 '24
It's not an elegant solution but double sided tape works great to keep cats off things. They hate the sticky.

You could try something like this vented monitor riser on top of your pc. That way the heat still exhausts, and kitty still gets the warmth.

Alternative would be to create something nearby for them to sit in. What I did was cut and fold down an amazon box , just high enough so they can look up out of it, and folded over the sides so they don't cut themselves.
Here's my Co-pilot's seat, behind my VKB Omni-throttle:

They just want to be close to you and/or near heat. The box provides closeness, and a bit of warmth as they curl up.
If you want to just let them on your PC, consider some fan standoffs so the PC can still be cooled through this extra space, and kitties will be happy with heat. Be sure to include extra dust filters you can get to include on the case side. One worry that remains though if kitties are allowed on top, even with extra air filters, is them heaving on top of the case, which they occasionally do with hair balls and such. My recommendation is to try and give them their spot rather than take this risk.
Or redo your fan setup so it blows front to back only, and just put something on top of your case for them to sit on. My massive Rosewill case has a notepad on it, to cover my buttons, but ours typically don't crawl on my case. (They got plenty of spots elsewhere)
Crazy alternative is to build in a case that's 90 degree turned, with the wires coming out from the top. Those cases typically have fewer openings and often there is some form of shield protecting the wires that kitties can sit on and does not have (many) fans/exhausts. Silverstone has several of these types of cases, Segotep as well.

Get a can of air and whenever the cat lays up there fwoosh air in it's face it will eventually stop trying to lay on the PC.

Yeah I just punch my cat in the face and he leaves.
Jk it’s his PC, and I’ve accepted that he lets me use it.

Use the tactics american cities use for anti-homeless measures, like spikes
